S & S Cheesecake Inc. Introduce
Introduction / Overview
When New Yorkers engage in the age-old debate regarding who produces the definitive New York-style cheesecake, one name consistently rises to the top of the list for those "in the know": S & S Cheesecake Inc. Tucked away in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, this legendary establishment has been a staple of the New York culinary landscape for decades. Unlike the high-profile, tourist-heavy bakeries in Manhattan, S & S Cheesecake maintains a low profile that belies its status as a world-class producer of gourmet desserts. Often described as the "gold standard" by food critics and local residents alike, this bakery has built a reputation on a single, perfected recipe that strikes the ideal balance between rich creaminess and a light, airy finish.
The history of S & S Cheesecake is deeply intertwined with the traditional craftsmanship of Old World baking. Founded by Fred Schuster, a Holocaust survivor who brought his culinary expertise to the Bronx, the bakery has remained a family-run operation that prioritizes quality over mass marketing. For over 50 years, they have focused on doing one thing exceptionally well. This dedication is evident in the texture of their cakes, which avoid the overly dense, "brick-like" consistency of many commercial cheesecakes, opting instead for a smooth, velvety profile that melts on the tongue. It is this unwavering commitment to the original recipe and high-quality ingredients that has allowed them to supply some of the finest steakhouses and restaurants across the city while remaining a humble, local favorite.
For those living in the New York region, a visit to S & S Cheesecake is more than just a trip to a bakery; it is a pilgrimage to a piece of living history. The shop exudes a nostalgic, no-frills charm that reminds patrons of an era when businesses focused entirely on the product. Whether it is a multi-generational family tradition to pick up a cake for a birthday or a first-time visitor discovering the shop through word-of-mouth, the experience is consistently met with warm service and the undeniable aroma of fresh-baked excellence. In a city that is constantly changing, S & S Cheesecake remains a steadfast reminder of the Bronx's rich gastronomic heritage.
Location and Accessibility
S & S Cheesecake Inc. is located at 222 W 238th St, Bronx, NY 10463, USA. This location puts it squarely in the Kingsbridge neighborhood, just a short distance from the lush greenery of Van Cortlandt Park. For local users in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, the bakery is remarkably accessible. It is situated conveniently near the 238th Street station on the 1 subway line, making it a relatively simple commute for those traveling from other parts of the city. The walk from the subway station to the storefront is brief, allowing commuters to easily pick up a cake on their way home.
For those choosing to drive, the bakery is located near major thoroughfares including the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) and the Henry Hudson Parkway. While street parking in the Bronx can be competitive, the quick "in-and-out" nature of the shop typically makes it manageable for those picking up pre-ordered cakes. An interesting quirk of the location’s accessibility is its relationship with the surrounding neighborhood; because the bakery itself often operates on wholesale-oriented hours (closing earlier than traditional retail shops), local residents have long appreciated that these legendary cakes are frequently available at the bodega a few doors down during weekends and evenings. This local partnership ensures that the community can satisfy their cheesecake cravings even outside of the bakery's standard operating window.
Services Offered
While S & S Cheesecake focuses primarily on its core product line, they offer several services that cater to both individual dessert lovers and larger events:
- In-Store Retail Sales: Customers can visit the storefront to purchase whole cakes in various sizes, ranging from individual-sized portions to large cakes suitable for family gatherings.
- Wholesale Supply: The bakery serves as a primary supplier for high-end restaurants, steakhouses, and specialty food markets throughout the New York metropolitan area.
- Phone Ordering and Reservations: Given the popularity of their cakes, especially during holidays, the bakery accepts phone orders to ensure your preferred flavor and size are reserved for pickup.
- Nationwide Shipping: For those who have moved away from the Bronx but still crave the authentic taste of S & S, the bakery offers shipping services via their website, ensuring the cakes arrive fresh and intact.
- Custom Flavor Toppings: While they specialize in the plain NY Style, they offer professional fruit toppings including strawberry, pineapple, and cherry.
- Kosher Certification: The bakery maintains strict quality standards, ensuring their products meet the dietary requirements of the local Kosher-observant community.
Features / Highlights
What sets S & S Cheesecake apart from its competitors are several distinct features that have earned it a permanent spot in the New York food hall of fame:
- Unrivaled Texture: The defining highlight is the "perfect" consistency—creamy and smooth without being too dense or too light.
- Authentic Ingredients: The bakery uses premium cream cheese, fresh eggs, and a signature graham cracker crust that provides the perfect savory-sweet contrast.
- Family-Owned Hospitality: Patrons frequently report wonderful conversations with the staff, noting a level of service that makes every visit feel personal and welcomed.
- Legacy and Tradition: With over half a century of operation, the bakery is a staple for birthday traditions and holiday celebrations for New York families.
- Variety of Sizes: Whether you need a 7-inch cake for a small dinner or an 11-inch cake for a large party, the bakery provides options to fit various needs.
- Strategic Local Availability: The unique availability of their products in nearby neighborhood shops during off-hours is a major highlight for the local Kingsbridge community.

What is Worth Choosing
When it comes to making a selection at S & S Cheesecake, the "Plain" NY Style Cheesecake is the absolute must-try for any first-time visitor. It is the purest expression of their craft and allows the quality of the ingredients to shine without distraction. It is the foundation upon which their entire reputation was built, and even without toppings, it remains a rich and satisfying experience that many purists believe cannot be improved upon.
However, for those who enjoy a fruity accompaniment, the Strawberry Cheesecake is widely considered the best of the fruit-topped options. The freshness of the preserves and the vibrant flavor of the strawberries complement the tanginess of the cream cheese perfectly. If you are looking to branch out further, the pineapple and cherry toppings are also superb and highly recommended by long-time regulars. For regular visitors, many suggest trying the smaller sizes or "samplers" if available, but for a special occasion, a large, extra-fresh cake pulled straight from the bakery’s inventory is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. No matter the flavor, the consensus among local users is clear: once you have tasted an S & S cheesecake, other versions simply won't measure up.

Outstanding. Simply the very best NY Style Cheesecake. Creamy, smooth, not too dense, yet not too light - perfection. I love the plain, but sampled the fruit ones. Strawberry is my favorite, but pineapple and cherry are superb . So happy they are available at the bodega a few doors down weekends and evenings, whilst S&S is closed.

My father had always raved about these cheesecakes as he found them many many years ago. I have always looooved cheesecakes, so of course I was down to try it. These past three years I have ALWAYS made the trip with him to get (multiple..) cheesecakes for my birthday, and it's one of my favorite parts of the day. Love it so much! Great service too! Had a wonderful conversation during my last visit❤️

True confessions! 👀We've traveled out of state to get this cheesecake for years--it was THE Best! Just made our special trip to get it---the crust wasn't cooked!😭New owners? Don't think so--New bakers? Maybe. No quality control? Most likely.🫤

I haven’t been there in years, I remember how great it was when you walked in and they were baking cheesecakes and the line was out the door. Bought three cheesecakes today worth $87 and they are horrible! Definitely not the same taste or size as in the past. As someone above stated the crust was raw in the the one that was given to me was probably sitting there for days! My pictures will show! Zagat rated maybe once upon a time but as my wife said I’d rather of eaten a Costco cheesecake. Don’t know if it’s new owbers but I saw a response that they’ve been in business for 60 years, but that doesn’t mean that they are serving quality stuff in 2023, maybe in 1963 till 2021 but definitely not now! The worst, horrible!
