Lloyd's Carrot Cake Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For decades, Lloyd’s Carrot Cake has stood as a culinary landmark in the Bronx, becoming a name synonymous with one of the most beloved desserts in New York City. Located directly across from the sprawling greenery of Van Cortlandt Park, this bakery is far more than a simple storefront; it is a storied institution that reflects the rich, diverse culture of the borough. As a celebrated Black-owned, family-oriented establishment, Lloyd’s has built its reputation on a single, powerful premise: perfecting the carrot cake. While many bakeries across the five boroughs attempt to replicate this classic, Lloyd’s has managed to capture a specific "flavor of the culture" that keeps locals and visitors alike returning to their Broadway location.
Walking into Lloyd’s Carrot Cake, customers are immediately struck by the intimate, home-style atmosphere. This is not a massive, industrial production line; it is a focused, specialized shop where the legacy of the original founder, Lloyd Adams, continues to thrive through the dedication of his family. The bakery has garnered a massive following not just through word-of-mouth in the neighborhood, but also via a strong social media presence that has made it a "must-visit" destination for dessert lovers across the tri-state area. Whether you are picking up a single slice for a midday treat or a whole cake for a major celebration, Lloyd’s provides a sense of community and heritage that is baked into every layer of frosting and crumb.
Location and Accessibility
Lloyd’s Carrot Cake is situated at 6087 Broadway, Bronx, NY 10471, USA. This location is particularly iconic due to its proximity to Van Cortlandt Park, making it a favorite stop for New Yorkers who spend their weekends hiking, playing sports, or enjoying the outdoors in one of the city's largest parks. Its position in the North Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale/Fieldston provides a unique blend of urban energy and residential charm. For those living in the 10471 area, it is a convenient local staple, while for others, it represents a worthy destination at the very end of the Broadway line.
In terms of accessibility, the bakery is well-connected to the New York City transit system. It is located just a short distance from the 242nd Street station, the northern terminus of the 1 subway line. This makes it incredibly easy for residents of Manhattan or other parts of the Bronx to hop on the train and walk a few blocks to the shop. For those traveling by car, its location on Broadway offers relatively straightforward access from the Henry Hudson Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. While parking on Broadway can be typical of New York—requiring a bit of patience during peak hours—the turnover at the bakery is usually quick, allowing for easy pickups. The shop is small and efficient, designed perfectly for the "grab-and-go" nature of the city, though many find the nearby park benches to be the perfect place to sit and enjoy their purchase immediately.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Lloyd’s for the first time, the absolute essential choice is a slice of their namesake Carrot Cake. For those who enjoy a bit of texture, the version with nuts provides a classic crunch that perfectly offsets the rich, creamy frosting. However, the nut-free version is equally popular for its pure, spiced flavor. Local regulars often suggest that the carrot cake is so flavorful and moist that it can serve as a meal in itself—a sentiment echoed by customers who find themselves having a slice for lunch. It is the "gold standard" by which all other carrot cakes in the city are measured, reflecting a deep cultural connection to the recipe.
If you are looking to branch out beyond the signature item, the Strawberry Coconut Cake is highly recommended. It offers a bright, fruity alternative that is both delicious and visually striking. Additionally, for those who prefer something slightly less indulgent than a full cake slice, the Coconut Scone is a hidden gem on the menu. Described as moist and not overly sweet, it is the perfect accompaniment to a morning coffee or a light afternoon snack. While individual tastes vary—and some "carrot cake queens" may have their own high bars for comparison—the overall consensus is that the visit to this Broadway institution is a vital New York experience. Choosing a variety of slices allows you to appreciate the full breadth of this family-oriented bakery’s talent, ensuring that everyone in your group finds something to rave about. Supporting Lloyd's Carrot Cake means participating in a piece of Bronx history while enjoying some of the most soulful desserts in the United States.

I discovered this bakery on Instagram and made a mental note to visit the next time I was nearby. A few weeks later, I finally had the opportunity to stop by and picked up a few slices of the various flavors they offered. First, I want to mention that this is not a large bakery at all; it appears to be a family-oriented establishment. I specifically went there for the carrot cake, which they offer with or without nuts, available either as a whole cake or by the slice. I purchased one slice of each flavor, and although I don’t remember the exact prices, they were reasonable. As for the carrot cake, it was just okay. I wasn't particularly impressed; I've had better. While it was tasty, it was a bit dry. My mom, who is the "carrot cake queen," agreed with me without me prompting her, so I knew my opinion was confirmed. On a positive note, I really enjoyed the coconut scone—it was moist and not overly sweet. I didn't taste the chocolate slice, and the strawberry slice was just okay. Overall, I believe the visit was worth it, but I might choose to pass on this bakery in the future. I do want to commend them for being a small, Black-owned business that has made a name for itself, so kudos to them!

Last Saturday I purchased a carrot sheet cake for my job event. Biggest mistake EVER !!!!!! THE CAKE WAS A WEEK OLD !!!!!! STAFF INFORMED US THEY ONLY MAKE CAKES OF THAT SIZE ON THE WEEKEND SOOOO WITH THAT BEING SAID MY CAKE WAS A WEEK OLD AND STALE BECAUSE MY EVENT WAS ON A FRIDAY!!!!!! After the staff apologized for the embarrassment and explained that the sheet cakes aren't even made there. The owner then lied and refused to do anything to compensate for the awful dry stale cake they sold us EVEN AFTER WE BROUGHT BACK CAKE TO SHOW IT WAS DRY AND HARD. Thank goodness we also ordered a red velvet from Docs Cake Shop in Brooklyn they saved the day. Best Cake I've ever tasted 🤤

In addition to the cake, the service is excellent I just picked up a cake and a slice and the young man serving me was the best. A real gentleman, friendly, courteous and efficient. Sorry I didn't get his name but I will next time.THANK YOU LOU
