Tall Poppy Introduce
In the competitive culinary landscape of Manhattan, particularly within the discerning neighborhood of Chelsea, a new contender has emerged to redefine the standard for the morning pastry. Tall Poppy, which opened its doors in September 2024, has rapidly ascended from a local secret to a must-visit destination for those who value the intersection of traditional French technique and innovative, global flavor profiles. Founded by two former lawyers who traded their legal briefs for lamination, the bakery is built on a foundation of "doing it right." For local New Yorkers, this means a commitment to small-batch production, high-quality ingredients, and a level of freshness that is often missing from larger, high-volume establishments.
The shop itself captures a cozy, unpretentious "neighborhood bakery" vibe that feels authentically grounded amidst the sleek galleries and boutiques of the West 20s. Tall Poppy is not a place of industrial machinery; rather, it is a human-centric kitchen where every croissant, bun, and cookie is handmade from scratch. The name itself is a playful nod to "tall poppy syndrome"—a term familiar to those from Australia and New Zealand—but here, the only thing being cut down to size is the line of eager patrons that often stretches down the block. In an era where many bakeries prioritize social media aesthetics over substance, Tall Poppy manages to deliver on both fronts, offering visually stunning pastries that possess a sophisticated depth of flavor and a texture that can only come from meticulous, small-batch care.
Location and Accessibility
Tall Poppy is located at 156 W 20th St, New York, NY 10011, USA, nestled between 6th and 7th Avenues. This central Chelsea location makes it a convenient stop for residents of the 10011 zip code and those commuting through the heart of Manhattan. The bakery is easily accessible via several major subway lines, with the 18th Street station (1 train) and the 23rd Street station (1, 2, F, M trains) just a few blocks away. For those who prefer the bus, the M7 and M20 lines running along the avenues provide a direct route to the shop’s doorstep.
The storefront is intimate and primarily designed for grab-and-go service, reflecting the fast-paced nature of New York City life. However, for those who wish to linger, there are a few outdoor tables that offer a quintessential Chelsea street-side experience. Accessibility is straightforward, though patrons should be prepared for the physical reality of a popular NYC bakery: the shop is small, and lines are common, especially on weekend mornings. Because the bakery adheres to a "baked fresh daily" philosophy, they operate until 2:00 PM or until they sell out, making early arrival a strategic necessity for those hoping to secure the full variety of the day’s offerings.

What is worth choosing
For the first-time visitor to Tall Poppy, the "Everything Cruffin" is an absolute necessity. This hybrid pastry—a cross between a croissant and a muffin—is seasoned with house-made bagel spices and filled with a savory chive cream cheese. It is a masterful interpretation of a New York classic, providing a shatteringly crisp exterior and a rich, creamy center that manages to be indulgent without being heavy. If you prefer a sweet start to your day, the Cinnamon Bun is a standout. Unlike the overly sugary versions found elsewhere, this bun is more pastry-like than bread-like, featuring a light frosting and a soft, subtly sweet crumb that highlights the quality of the cinnamon butter.
The specialty croissants also deserve high praise, particularly the seasonal or monthly specials like the Sugar Cookie Almond Croissant. These items often feature unique glazes and fillings that change based on what produce is at its peak. For those who appreciate savory-sweet balances, the PB&J Croissant—filled with peanut creme patisserie and house-made raspberry jam—offers a nostalgic yet elevated flavor profile. Even the simpler items, like the Plain Croissant, demonstrate the bakery's technical prowess; with its distinct "crackle" and airy interior, it serves as a testament to the skill of the bakers working in the basement below. To complete your experience, pair your pastry with a Thai Iced Tea Bun or a cup of their carefully brewed coffee, and you will understand why this Chelsea newcomer has so quickly become a staple of the New York bakery scene.

Tall Poppy is THE spot for one of the best baked goodies in nyc. I stopped by here on sunday around noon. but by the time I got there, most of the pastries were already sold out 🥹 🥐 I ended up getting just a plain croissant and a chocolate croissant. The plain one was wonderfully light, chewy inside and not-too-flaky on the outside; the chocolate one had a rich but balanced filling, not too sweet. both tasted fresh 🫶🏻 it opened in September 2024 and was founded by two former lawyers ✨ The bakery emphasizes handmade, small-batch pastries baked fresh every morning “down under” (in their basement kitchen). The shop itself is cozy and unpretentious. it is a nice neighborhood bakery vibe. there are 2-3 tables outside.

I pre-ordered a variety of pastries for a birthday collection, and they did not disappoint! We tried the Cinnamon Bun, Coquito Bun, Pumpkin Spice Bun, Chocolate Pain Suisse, Sugar Cookie Almond Croissant, and Chocolate Ganache Croissant. The standouts were definitely the buns and the Sugar Cookie Almond Croissant. These are not your typical cinnamon buns - they are more pastry-like than bread-like and less sugary - but they are fantastic. The frosting is light, and the bun itself is soft and only subtly sweet. The Sugar Cookie Almond Croissant is a monthly special and is where a lot of the social media hype comes from. It looks great, and luckily, it tastes just as good! As for the Chocolate Pain Suisse and Chocolate Ganache Croissant, I personally wouldn’t order these again. It’s not that they weren't tasty, but they just weren't standouts compared to the others. Across the board, the lamination on these pastries is excellent; you can really tell the bakers know what they are doing! Service was friendly and fast, and there was no queue during my visit at 8 a.m. on a Monday. Overall, I’d highly recommend this bakery! ⭐️

I followed the hype to check these pastries out...they were fine. The cinnamon roll was less bun, more pastry. A little like a croissant covered in the cream cheese icing. Good, but not my preference. The everything pastry was also fine. Nothing earth shattering, but fine. Prices were steep, but the servers were friendly and lovely.

I stopped by this very small bakery after seeing it on Instagram and got curious — and I was absolutely not disappointed. The products are truly excellent. I tried the everything cruffin that felt like a mix between a muffin, a bagel, and a croissant, filled with cream cheese, and it was honestly amazing. Extremely flavorful, well balanced, and very satisfying. The only downside is that there’s no seating inside, no restrooms, and unless the weather is nice enough to sit outside, you’ll probably end up eating on the go — which is a bit frustrating because the pastries deserve to be fully enjoyed. That said, the staff was super friendly, and I’ll definitely be back to try more items. Great quality, creative pastries, and absolutely worth the stop.

I was told this company made the best cinnamon buns in the neighborhood if not the city and went to check them out. The staff was super welcoming and kind. I complimented the employees red hair and she was so polite in response. I ordered two Strawberry Miso Bun’s and a regular Cinnamon Bun to share with visiting friends and my husband. I bought them in the early afternoon and planned to serve them after dinner. The Cinnamon Bun was truly delicious but the Miso buns tasted a bit off. My husband commented on his tasting strange before I tried mine. It wasn’t until I took a closer look and realized the bun was clearly burnt and covered with frosting. It was surprising. Upon tasting more to see if it was salvageable (especially at nearly $10 a bun) I realized they were most definitely burnt and unsalvageable. Whether the employee who selected them and sealed them in my box was negligible on inspecting her selection or the entire batch was burnt and covered with frosting by another employee or whether she intentionally selected those particular burnt pieces or any other possible scenerio, I’m not sure. Nonetheless, it was extremely off putting and left more than just a charred taste in my mouth. I don’t know of any company, especially this small, that would stand behind this as acceptable. I want to give the service more stars but because of this oversight of the staff and the impression upon my discovery, I don’t think it would be warranted. This cannot be acceptable, especially for a small business. Bitterly disappointed…literally.
