Central Caribbean Bakery & Central Seafood Restaurant Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For those living in or visiting the North Bronx, the vibrant intersection of culture and cuisine is often best represented by the local Caribbean establishments that line the major thoroughfares. Among these local landmarks is Central Caribbean Bakery & Central Seafood Restaurant, a dual-concept establishment that has become a neighborhood fixture on East Gun Hill Road. This unique destination combines the aromatic delights of a traditional Jamaican bakery with the hearty, savory offerings of a full-scale Caribbean restaurant. It serves as a vital culinary hub for the local community, providing a taste of the islands that is both authentic and accessible to the diverse population of New York City.
The essence of Central Caribbean Bakery lies in its commitment to the bold, spicy, and comforting flavors of Jamaican heritage. From the moment you approach the entrance, the air is often filled with the scent of browning meats, warm spices like pimento and scotch bonnet, and the undeniable fragrance of freshly baked dough. For New Yorkers who have a high standard for Caribbean food, this establishment has built a reputation for delivering great Jamaican cuisine without the premium price tag often found in trendier Manhattan spots. It is a place where locals can find a quick breakfast snack or a full seafood dinner, all under one roof, making it a versatile choice for any time of day.
What defines the experience here is the marriage of two distinct culinary traditions: the fast-paced, grab-and-go nature of a bakery and the sit-down or take-out depth of a seafood-focused restaurant. This hybrid model allows the business to cater to a wide range of needs. Whether you are a student looking for an affordable beef patty after school or a family seeking a traditional Sunday dinner, Central Caribbean Bakery & Central Seafood Restaurant provides a consistent and culturally rich environment. Despite the hustle and bustle characteristic of the Bronx, the establishment maintains a local charm that keeps regulars coming back "from time to time" to satisfy their cravings for genuine island spices.
Location and Accessibility
Conveniently situated at 1322 E Gun Hill Rd, Bronx, NY 10469, USA, the establishment enjoys a prime location in one of the busiest sections of the borough. East Gun Hill Road is a major East-West artery in the Bronx, connecting various residential neighborhoods like Baychester, Williamsbridge, and Pelham Gardens. This makes the bakery and restaurant an easy stop for those navigating the North Bronx by car or on foot. The storefront is highly visible and integrated into a lively commercial strip, surrounded by other essential neighborhood services, which contributes to its role as a community gathering point.
In terms of accessibility for the typical New York commuter, the location is well-positioned. It is served by several MTA bus routes, including the Bx28 and Bx38, which stop within close proximity to the entrance. For those utilizing the subway system, the Gun Hill Rd station (serving the 5 train) is the nearest major rail link, though it may require a short bus transfer or a healthy walk to reach the shop directly. For drivers, street parking is the primary option; while the Bronx can be competitive for parking, the turnover on East Gun Hill Road often allows for quick stops to pick up orders. The shop’s layout is designed for high-traffic flow, ensuring that even during busier times, customers can move through the ordering process efficiently.

I love this place. Been coming from time to time because all the food is great jamaican cuisine and it's not expensive whatsoever. However today I bought a regular beef patty for my little brother and they handed us this. Mind you we didn't touch anything in the bag until we got home. Very miserable looking patty right? Either way he still ate it and loved the flavor so that was the plus side. I don't know if we upset them or something but I promise I said please and thank you when ordering and it wasn't busy. There was no need for this at all.

The patties here are different because unlike other locations, they step out the box and have a huge variety. But usually a customer service is not what it should be. Making orders to be picked up is always a struggle.. I personally have been stuck with an order only have of the patties were right and was forced to pay for it because they require a certain number of cocktails patties per order…. I needed it for the next day so I took a L .. honestly turned off .. this location needs new management or if it’s the owner training people they need to give the business to someone else..

I'm writing this emotionally charged review as a public announcement to people who may find themselves facing the same situation and in doing so, I hope to prevent it from happening to anyone else. x I learned a few days ago that Jamaican patty crusts usually contains lard, beef suet or tallow (some kind of animal fat) even the vegetable variants so, I did what anyone would do and contacted the bakery to ask if they also utilize the same techniques. From that point, I endured a terrible bout of brackish customer service. x The woman on the phone confirmed that they may indeed use lard in the crusts or "something like that" in their patty crusts and sounded sure of it, but refused to confirm whether or not they use it in the crust of the vegetable patties as well. x When I informed her that if they do use lard or tallow, or beef suet or any animal fat for that matter then their vegetarian patties are not actually vegetarian safe, she immediately backtracked, becoming flustered and feverishly telling me that I should ask the manager because she's not sure. She wouldn't even let me get a word in after that. She brusquely told me to call back to speak to the manager when he got in. I called back over two times (at least 2 hours between each call) and never actually got to speak to the manager. It was clear they didn't want to admit to the fact that they probably use animal fat to cook their 'vegetarian' patties. This added insult to injury. x !WARNING -- The vegetable patties sold in their bakery, i.e., the patties that they (sometimes) label as vegetarian, are actually not, indeed meat free. Beware, fellow vegetarians and take heed. x I ate their vegetable patties for at least a year before now. I'm deeply upset, I feel stupid, betrayed, my morals have been violated and I have whiplash from their insensitive treatment. Not to mention it's actually illegal to label a product as vegetarian/vegan if it's not. I checked the menu twice. The first time, it said the vegetable patties were vegetarian, on a second look, the word vegetarian was nowhere to be found ??? But some reviews reference their menu as being vegetarian friendly. x Hopefully, they learn from this experience and make amends in the future, either by correctly labeling the menu items or removing meat byproducts from their vegetable patties, altogether. Either way, the damage is done. x P.S I think the Gun Hill branch and the Nereid Ave branch are owned by the same people and therefore probably share patty crust recipes. Evidence: They share business numbers. Eat at your own risk!
