Island Bakery Introduce
In a city where high-end patisseries and trendy cupcake shops seem to pop up on every corner, there is something profoundly comforting about a neighborhood institution that stays true to its roots. For residents living along the border of Long Island City and Astoria, Island Bakery is that reliable sanctuary. This is not a place that relies on flashy social media campaigns or overpriced aesthetic treats; instead, it has built a steadfast reputation through decades of consistent quality, incredibly fair pricing, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes every customer feel like a neighbor.
Island Bakery represents the heart of the Queens culinary landscape. As you walk down Broadway, the scent of fresh dough and sweet sugar often acts as a natural invitation to step inside. The interior is clean, cozy, and unassuming, focusing entirely on the craft of baking. While newer establishments in the area often command long lines and premium prices, Island Bakery remains a hidden gem that locals prefer to keep to themselves—though the secret is certainly out among those who have lived in the area for forty years or more. It is a place where tradition meets affordability, serving as a pillar for the local community's daily bread and special occasion treats.
Location and Accessibility
Convenience is a major factor for any New Yorker, and Island Bakery is perfectly positioned to serve the foot traffic of a busy residential and commercial corridor. You can find this local staple at 42-17 Broadway, Long Island City, NY 11103, USA. Located on one of the most vibrant avenues in the borough, it sits at a crossroads where Long Island City meets the southern edge of Astoria, making it easily accessible to a wide demographic of city dwellers.
For those traveling by public transit, the bakery is exceptionally well-located. It is just a short walk from the Steinway Street station, served by the M and R subway lines. Additionally, several local bus routes traverse Broadway, stopping nearly right in front of the shop. Whether you are grabbing a quick chocolate croissant before your morning commute or stopping by on your way home to pick up a loaf of bread for dinner, the bakery’s street-level entrance and central location make it a seamless part of any daily routine. For locals who have recently moved to the area, it quickly becomes a landmark in their new neighborhood geography.

What is worth choosing
If there is one item that defines the Island Bakery experience, it is undoubtedly the zucchini pie. This isn't your standard dessert pie; it is a savory, firm, and incredibly flavorful dish that has gained a cult following among long-time residents. At an impressive price point—often cited at just ten dollars for an entire pie—it offers a unique flavor profile that balances the lightness of zucchini with a savory, "stuffing-like" finish. It is the kind of dish that works just as well as a holiday side as it does for a simple, comforting weeknight dinner.
Beyond the savory options, the semolina bread is a must-buy for anyone who appreciates the foundation of a good meal. The bread is fresh, with a perfect crust and a soft interior that holds up well. For those with a sweet tooth, the chocolate croissants and walnut brownies are highlights of the pastry case. The chocolate croissants are noted for their generous filling and buttery layers, while the brownie walnut bars provide a dense, rich indulgence. Another classic choice is the cannoli, which maintains its crunch and creamy center, standing up bravely against any of the more "famous" Italian bakeries in the borough. Choosing Island Bakery means choosing quality and tradition over social media trends, and your wallet will certainly thank you for the visit.
Island Bakery continues to be a shining example of why local businesses are the lifeblood of New York City. By focusing on great food, great prices, and a great staff, they have created a space that feels like home for everyone from the new resident down the street to the 40-year veteran of the neighborhood. Would you like me to help you find more local gems or perhaps draft a list of other must-try savory pies in the Queens area?

Moved down the street from this place a few months ago and finally stopped in yesterday with my mom. A good friend who has lived in this area for 40 years keeps bugging me about trying the zucchini pie at this place so I finally did. It was delicious! Kind of like a squash casserole you would get in the south but a lot firmer and with some Stovetop Stuffing vibes. Great and only 10 bucks for an entire pie. We also got two chocolate croissants, a cannoli, and a loaf of bread all for 20 bucks. Great staff too. Highest possible recommendation—-MUCH better than Gian Petro or other more hyped longstanding Astoria bakeries.

Such a cozy and clean bakery and everything looks wonderful. I'll definitely be going back. Can't wait to try the kataifi! Very friendly staff too. Highly recommend!

As I was passing by, the bread 🥖 in the window looked delicious, so I stopped in. It’s simple, but delicious. And reasonably priced. I’ll be a regular.

Went in there for a black and white cookie and it was rock solid. Lady there was rude from when I even walked in and wouldn't even offer me something else instead. Once before I bought cookies from there and rhey were stale. Also, would not offer me something else or money back. Health Dept should check them out
