Badass Bagels Rye Introduce
In the heart of Rye, New York, a new wave of artisanal baking has taken root, challenging the status quo of the traditional New York deli. Badass Bagels, located on the town’s historic Purchase Street, represents a bold departure from the standard yeast-leavened bagel. Founded by culinary entrepreneur Jennifer Balin—the creative force behind Norwalk’s Sugar & Olives—this shop has quickly become a local sensation for those who take their breakfast seriously. For Westchester residents who appreciate the intersection of health, craft, and community, Badass Bagels offers a "farm-to-bagel" experience that prioritizes slow fermentation and locally sourced ingredients over high-volume industrial production.
The shop’s identity is defined by its refusal to compromise on quality. While many bagel shops rely on commercial yeast to speed up the rising process, Badass Bagels utilizes a 100% wild yeast sourdough starter created during the spring of 2020. This "slow food" approach results in a bagel that is fundamentally different: it is light yet chewy, boasts a distinctive crunch on the exterior, and ends with a subtle sourdough tang. The atmosphere of the Rye location matches this artisanal edge, featuring a clean, modern, and "punk-rustic" aesthetic that stands out in the traditional landscape of downtown Rye. Whether you are a sourdough enthusiast or simply a New Yorker in search of the perfect toastie, this spot offers a curated experience that feels both innovative and deeply rooted in quality-first principles.
Location and Accessibility
Badass Bagels is centrally located at 12 Purchase St, Rye, NY 10580, USA. This prime location places it in the epicenter of Rye’s shopping and dining district, making it an ideal stop for residents enjoying a weekend morning stroll or parents dropping children off at the nearby Rye Free Reading Room. Its position on Purchase Street ensures it is part of the town’s walkable core, though the shop’s lack of a traditional large outdoor sign—due to local architectural review discussions regarding its cheeky name—makes it a bit of a "hidden gem" for those who aren't looking for the hashtag-branded window decals.
Accessibility is a strong suit for this location, as it is just a short walk from the Rye Metro-North station, catering to commuters who want a high-quality breakfast before heading into Manhattan. For those traveling by car, there is ample street parking along Purchase Street and several municipal lots nearby. The interior of the shop is designed for efficiency and aesthetics, with large windows that provide excellent natural light. While seating is intentionally limited to a few small tables to maintain its "slow bagel" boutique feel, the space is welcoming and meticulously kept. The shop is also accessible via various local delivery platforms, ensuring that even those working from home in Westchester can enjoy their sourdough fix.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Badass Bagels, the most recommended experience is to dive into their sourdough specialty items. For the "purist with a twist," the Everything Sourdough bagel paired with their signature "Plain but Not Boring" schmear—which is churned rather than whipped to a frosting-like consistency—is a revelation. If you are feeling bold, the "Cowboy Candy" schmear, featuring locally grown candied jalapeños, offers a perfect balance of sweet and heat that has become a cult favorite in Westchester.
For a more substantial meal, the "Lickety Lox" is highly regarded. This isn't your average lox bagel; it features house-cured Faroe Island Gravlax, pickled red onions, matchstick radishes, and fried capers, all served with a lemon wedge for a bright, sophisticated flavor profile. Those with gluten sensitivities should not overlook the gluten-free bagels, which are available for pre-order and have received high praise for maintaining a "real" bagel texture. Finally, don't leave without checking out their selection of sourdough pastries and packaged goods, which add an extra layer of personality to this unique Rye staple. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, the commitment to "slow bagels" at 12 Purchase Street makes it a go-to destination for anyone seeking a truly badass breakfast.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Badass Bagels lives up to the name in every way. The bagels are perfectly toasted with that ideal crunch on the outside and soft chew inside. The avocado spreads are fresh, generously layered, and beautifully seasoned, and the egg salad and smoked whitefish options look just as dialed in. The coffee and cold drinks menu is on point from cold brew to hibiscus iced tea and lemonade everything feels thoughtfully curated. The space itself is clean, modern, and welcoming, with great natural light and a relaxed neighborhood vibe. Even the merch and packaged goods add to the personality of the place. You can tell quality and detail matter here. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down to enjoy it, this spot delivers consistently. Easily a go-to bagel stop in Rye. Highly recommend.

If you're looking to try something new then look no further. This unique bagel shop adds a twist with your usual bagel catalog, from unique butters and spreads to diverse bagels, this is not your average bagel shop. The staff was very friendly and the storefront had a punk-rustic atmosphere. I enjoyed a everything sourdough bagel with a plain cream cheese which is much smoother than most. While priced at $6 a little more than I would like to spend, it was enjoyable none the less. I will be back and be bold to try one of their different bagels and or spreads. Much luck to the owners and their future in Rye.

Lived in Rye for most of my life. Best bagels around Westchester. Period. Healthy, fresh and no BS - my favorite! I got their poppyseed bagel with scallion cream cheese and it was delicious. I didn’t get a chance to snap a photo but let me tell you, the bagel to go box is licked clean. I highly recommend this place. My one constructive criticism would be maybe to have on some light music on the inside. Other than that 10/10!!

Updated (1/26): I came back to give this place another shot and the bagel while still expensive was improved. The cookie I added to my order however had huge pieces of parchment paper baked into it and I practically ate two of them! I wish I could say they fixed the operational issues but I’m afraid this place is still a risk to eat at and I don’t plan to return a third time. Added photo of cookie with paper. Original Review: Good news: The flavors are interesting and it’s new so it gets a pass on some things. Bad news: my bagel was very undercooked in one spot(hard to see in the photo) and the hot honey pistachio cream cheese just tastes like jalapeños and pickles. I hope this team turns up the operations dial because the menu and location show promise. Prices also need to come a bit back down to earth.

Badass Bagels lives up to its name—the bagels and spreads are truly unique and some of the best I’ve had in the area. That said, the shop in Rye is still finding its footing operationally. The staff is always friendly, but the process can feel a bit chaotic, even when there aren’t many customers waiting. A little more efficiency would go a long way in improving the experience. I’d definitely recommend grabbing some bagels and spreads to prepare and enjoy at home. The shop has a minimalist aesthetic that aligns with the brand, but it doesn’t feel like a place designed for lingering. The quality of the bagels makes it well worth a visit!
