Hand Rolled Bagels Introduce
In the competitive culinary landscape of Westchester County, few items are as fiercely debated as the New York bagel. For residents of Rye and the surrounding coastal communities, Hand Rolled Bagels on Purdy Avenue represents a steadfast commitment to a craft that has largely been lost to industrial automation. As a quintessential New York bagel shop, this establishment stands as a testament to the "old school" method of bagel production, where texture, density, and flavor are achieved through manual labor and time-honored techniques. For locals, the morning ritual often begins here, amidst the aroma of boiling dough and the constant hum of a neighborhood gathering spot.
The shop’s identity is built into its name. While many commercial bagels are extruded through machines—resulting in a soft, bread-like consistency—Hand Rolled Bagels continues the tradition of rolling individual dough portions by hand. This process creates a distinct structural integrity, producing a bagel with a dense, chewy interior and a shiny, crisp exterior that holds up under the weight of thick cream cheese or heavy lox. The atmosphere is fast-paced and no-frills, mirroring the classic NYC bagel shop vibe that New Yorkers have come to expect: a place where efficiency is valued as much as the quality of the bake. Whether you are a lifelong Rye resident or a visitor exploring the historic downtown, understanding the nuances of this local staple is key to navigating the Westchester breakfast scene.
Location and Accessibility
Hand Rolled Bagels is strategically located at 17 Purdy Ave, Rye, NY 10580, USA. This prime location is situated in the heart of Rye’s vibrant business district, just a short walk from the iconic Purchase Street. For those traveling by rail, the shop is exceptionally convenient, located only a few blocks from the Rye Metro-North train station. This makes it a preferred pitstop for Manhattan-bound commuters looking to secure a fresh breakfast before their morning ride.
Accessibility by car is facilitated by the shop’s central position, though Purdy Avenue is known for its bustling activity. Street parking is available directly in front of the shop and along adjacent blocks, and there are several municipal lots within a three-minute walk. The shop’s physical layout includes a small, cozy interior that often sees a line extending toward the door during peak weekend hours—a hallmark of any popular New York bagel destination. For those who prefer a sit-down experience, the shop features an upstairs eating area that provides a warmer, more relaxed environment away from the hustle of the ordering counter. This dual-level setup allows the establishment to serve both the "grab-and-go" crowd and those who wish to linger over their morning coffee.

Features and Highlights
The shop is defined by several unique characteristics that have earned it a loyal, if sometimes critical, following in the local community:
- The "Hand-Rolled" Guarantee: Every bagel is shaped by hand, ensuring an authentic texture that is denser and chewier than machine-made alternatives.
- Kettle-Boiled Tradition: Before baking, the bagels undergo a traditional boiling process that locks in moisture and creates the signature shiny crust.
- Second-Floor Seating: A rare feature for small-town bagel shops, the upstairs dining area offers a quiet retreat for families and students.
- Boar’s Head Partnership: The use of premium Boar's Head cold cuts ensures that their deli sandwiches meet the high standards of New York residents.
- Vibrant Neighborhood Hub: Located in one of Rye's most walkable areas, the shop serves as a community anchor where locals frequently run into neighbors.
- Early Opening Hours: Catering to the earliest commuters and "early birds," the shop typically opens its doors before 7:00 AM.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Hand Rolled Bagels, the smartest move is to lean into the items that showcase their labor-intensive process. The "Everything" bagel is a perennial favorite, known for a generous coating of seeds and salt that perfectly complements the chewy dough. For a quintessential New York experience, pairing a fresh-from-the-oven bagel with their house-made lox spread or a classic Nova Scotia salmon sandwich is highly recommended. The salmon is sourced locally, providing that salty, silky contrast that is a staple of the Sunday morning tradition.
For those with a bigger appetite, the breakfast sandwiches featuring "Jumbo Eggs" offer excellent value and satiety. Ordering a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a toasted hand-rolled bagel is the gold standard for many locals. However, it is worth noting that the shop operates with the brisk, sometimes direct service style common to high-volume New York delis. To ensure the best experience, it is helpful to have your order ready and to utilize the text-to-order system during peak weekend rushes. While price points in Rye reflect the local market, the investment in a truly hand-rolled, boiled bagel provides a culinary connection to a New York tradition that is increasingly hard to find. For anyone seeking the specific "bite" of an authentic Westchester bagel, 17 Purdy Avenue remains a destination of note.

Customer service was so rude. $35 for 2 bagels and 2 coffees is absurd. No receipt & my order was wrong when I got home. Will never go back.

I’ve been coming here for over a year and have always enjoyed their bagels. Unfortunately, today I experienced the worst customer service from a petite woman with a short, traditionally masculine haircut. She was extremely rude and difficult to communicate with. Save yourself the frustration and head over to Lenny’s Bagels instead — they offer a great variety of bagels and far better customer service.

Rudest customer service I’ve experienced in my life. I was blown away by how rude they were. Another man and I looked at each other and kinda laughed because we were baffled that someone could be so mean to their customers. I’ve been going here for years and they’ve never been the friendliest, but after today I think I will be going somewhere else for bagels.

Really don't get the fascination with this place. Lines out the door. Parking, very few. Nothing special about the bagels. Certainly not for the cost, have had just as good in CT. When I was there, they messed up my order. Overall, not the worst, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

Over priced poor quality. They charged me $15 for a bagel sandwich with a peace of chicken. Clearly not going back there anymore ..
