Modern Coffee House Introduce
In the ever-evolving landscape of Manhattan’s Chinatown, where modern trends often collide with decades of tradition, Modern Coffee House at 105 East Broadway stands as a bridge between the two. Since its opening in May 2023, this charming bakery and café has quickly woven itself into the fabric of the neighborhood. Founded by Sandy, a Chánglè native who has called East Broadway home for nearly thirty years, the shop is a "full-circle" tribute to her community roots. It isn’t just a place to grab a caffeine fix; it is a labor of love that combines the warmth of a traditional Chinese bakery with a bright, clean, and welcoming aesthetic that appeals to the new generation of New Yorkers and long-time residents alike.
Modern Coffee House is uniquely positioned as a community hub, often filling up as early as 8:00 AM with local seniors enjoying their morning rituals. For the local New Yorker, the entrance—a distinctive stairway—evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of iconic Chinatown establishments like Wo Hop. Once inside, the atmosphere shifts to a bright, modern sanctuary where the aroma of freshly baked sponge cakes and simmering teas provides an immediate escape from the busy streets outside. Sandy’s attention to detail is evident in every tray; she notoriously adjusts the sweetness levels of her pastries to cater to the traditional "not too sweet" preference of the local "aunties and uncles," ensuring that every bite feels both authentic and carefully considered.
Location and Accessibility
Modern Coffee House is located at 105 E Broadway, New York, NY 10002, USA. Situated on a historic stretch of East Broadway, the bakery is nestled among the diverse shops and bustling markets that define the southern edge of Chinatown. Its location makes it an ideal stop for those exploring the Lower East Side or heading toward the Manhattan Bridge. The neighborhood is rich with cultural texture, and the café serves as a perfect starting point for a day of urban exploration.
Accessibility is a major highlight for commuters and local residents. The shop is just steps away from the East Broadway subway station, which serves the F train. Additionally, it is within reasonable walking distance of the Grand Street station (B and D trains) and the Canal Street hub (N, Q, R, W, J, Z, and 6 trains). For those using the city’s bus network, the M15 and M9 routes provide frequent service to the immediate vicinity. While the stairway entrance is a charming nod to traditional architecture, it is worth noting for those with mobility concerns. Like many gems in this part of the city, Modern Coffee House operates as a cash-only establishment, so visitors are encouraged to stop at one of the many nearby ATMs before heading in for their treats.

What is worth choosing
When you visit Modern Coffee House, the standout choice for any first-time visitor is the Taro Roll Cake. These slices are celebrated by locals for being exceptionally fluffy and moist, featuring a taro filling that is fresh and never dry. The "Original" flavor is equally impressive for those who appreciate the simple, eggy richness of a well-made Chinese sponge cake. If you are a fan of traditional buns, the Red Bean Pineapple Bun is a must-try; it features a beautifully textured, crunchy top crust and a savory-sweet red bean paste that retains the texture of the beans, providing a more authentic experience than overly processed smooth pastes.
For those looking for owner Sandy’s personal favorites, the Wolfberry Rose Tea is a fragrant, warming companion to any pastry. It is lightly sweet and floral, perfectly cutting through the richness of a Scallion Hot Dog Bun—another neighborhood classic that is soft, savory, and shaped for fun. If you’re in the mood for something light and spongy, the Strawberry Bun Cake or the Lemon Cake (filled with citrus cream) provide a refreshing citrusy lift. Regardless of what you choose, the combination of high-quality baking and incredibly affordable pricing makes Modern Coffee House a "must-visit" in the New York bakery circuit. Just remember to bring cash and get there early before the taro slices sell out!

I love their roll cake slices! I’ve had the original and the one in the photos is the taro. Both were so fluffy, fresh and not dry! I also got a red bean pineapple bun, the crust on top was yummy and the bread had a good chew. The pocket of red bean filling wasn’t in the center so I had to take a couple of bites till I reached it. The filling itself wasn’t too sweet and was a paste that you could see the beans (I prefer this over overly smooth paste). I’ll keep coming back here!!

Modern Coffee House/Strawberry Bun Cake: The stairway entrance kind of reminds me of the stairs at Wo Hop when I previously explored Chinatown. This bun cake is light and spongy. It wasn’t too overpowering or sweet and it’s definitely an acquired taste.

Cute little bakery that I discovered from Instagram (thanks nom_life!) The owner is super sweet and attentive, asking what I'd like as soon as I stepped foot inside. Service is quick. Lots of baked options. I am a sucker for sponge cake so got the original, strawberry, and ube. All were delicious. So spongy and soft. There is also a surrounding layer that is nice and eggy. Inside is clean and bright. I went early at 8am and it was already almost full, can't wait to come back!!!

Tiny neighborhood bakery with coffee or milk tea for just $1.50 (!!), and fresh brioche-style Chinese bakery items ($1.50) like bbq pork bao or scallion twist. Senior citizens fill up the tables first thing in the morning, and then there's usually seats free later in the day. New, clean and bright, in the E Broadway section of old Chinatown a little bit away from the mobs of tourist around Canal. Cash only.
