Bagelworks Introduce
For over four decades, the Upper East Side of Manhattan has been home to a local institution that embodies the very essence of the New York breakfast experience. Bagelworks, located prominently on 1st Avenue, has remained a steadfast provider of high-quality, traditional baked goods in a city that is constantly changing. Established in the early 1980s, this neighborhood staple has built a reputation for consistency, friendliness, and, most importantly, the authentic "balanced breadiness" that defines a true New York bagel. In a region where residents take their morning dough very seriously, Bagelworks has successfully navigated the fine line between classic tradition and modern variety, ensuring every visitor leaves satisfied.
Walking into Bagelworks feels like stepping into a piece of local history. Unlike the hyper-commercialized chains that have cropped up across the city, this shop maintains the charm of a dedicated neighborhood bakery. The aroma of malt, yeast, and toasted seeds fills the air, serving as a testament to their commitment to baking fresh on-site every single day. For the local community, it is a reliable sanctuary where the staff knows the regulars and the ordering process is refreshingly straight to the point. Whether you are a long-time resident of the 10065 zip code or a visitor looking to escape the long, hyped-up lines of tourist-heavy spots, Bagelworks offers a professional yet warm environment that prioritizes the craft of bagel making.
Location and Accessibility
Bagelworks is strategically situated at 1229 1st Ave, New York, NY 10065, USA. This prime location puts it right in the heart of the Upper East Side, specifically near the intersection of 1st Avenue and East 66th Street. Its placement makes it an ideal stop for those commuting toward Midtown or for healthcare professionals working at the nearby medical corridor, including Memorial Sloan Kettering and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The shop is easily accessible for pedestrians walking through the residential blocks of the neighborhood, providing a convenient "grab-and-go" option for those on their way to work or a morning stroll.
In terms of public transportation, the shop is well-served by the New York City subway system. It is within walking distance of the Q train at the 72nd Street station and the 6 train at the 68th Street-Hunter College station. Additionally, the M15 bus runs directly along 1st Avenue, making it incredibly simple to reach from almost anywhere on the East Side. While the shop focuses primarily on efficient indoor service, it does offer limited outdoor seating for those who wish to enjoy their breakfast while watching the morning rhythm of the city. The lack of overwhelming tourist lines means that accessibility isn't just about the physical location, but also about the ease and speed with which you can get your order and continue with your day.

Features / Highlights
What truly sets Bagelworks apart from the hundreds of other shops in Manhattan are the specific details that have kept them in business for over 40 years. These highlights define the customer experience:
- Historical Longevity: Having been around for 40+ years, they possess a level of expertise and community trust that newer establishments cannot replicate.
- The "Flat" Bagel Option: A unique feature for those who prefer less "bread in the middle," these squished, thinner bagels provide the perfect surface area for spreads without being too heavy.
- Graham Cracker Coffee: A standout highlight that local users frequently recommend for its unique, toasted sweetness that pairs perfectly with a savory bagel.
- Kind and Attentive Staff: The team is known for being polite and thorough, making sure to clarify orders to ensure accuracy, even during the Saturday morning rush.
- Dairy-Free Inclusivity: Their huge selection of non-dairy cream cheeses makes it a top destination for lactose-intolerant or vegan New Yorkers.
- Balanced Flavor Profiles: Their everything bagels are noted for a distinct balance of savory seeds with slight sweet notes, offering a more complex taste than standard versions.

What is worth choosing
When visiting a place with over four decades of history, certain menu items have naturally risen to "legendary" status. If you are a first-time visitor or a local looking to change your routine, the lox sandwiches are an absolute must. Prepared with fresh ingredients and generous portions of fish, these sandwiches represent the gold standard of New York deli-style breakfasts. While the wait time for a lox sandwich may be slightly longer (often 10+ minutes during peak hours like Saturday mornings) due to the care taken in assembly, the quality of the final product is widely considered worth the wait.
For those who prefer something slightly lighter, the "flat" bagel is a highly recommended choice. It offers the same iconic chew of a standard New York bagel but with a compressed profile that highlights the flavor of the crust and the toppings. Pair your choice with their signature Graham Cracker coffee; it is a specialty brew that has garnered a loyal following for its comforting, nostalgic aroma. Whether you are opting for an everything bagel with one of their many non-dairy spreads or a classic black and white cookie for a mid-afternoon treat, Bagelworks delivers a factual, no-frills excellence that remains a cornerstone of the Upper East Side food scene. It is the perfect choice for someone who values quality over trendiness and wants an authentic taste of the city's culinary heritage.
Ultimately, Bagelworks stands as a reminder of why the New York bagel is world-renowned. By staying true to their roots while evolving to meet the needs of today's diners—offering everything from traditional lox to modern non-dairy options—they ensure that the spirit of the 1st Avenue bakery lives on for another forty years. For a straightforward, delicious, and friendly experience, there is no better place to start your morning in the 10065 area.

Been around for 40+ years with bagels baked fresh on-site. Very standard NYC bagel - balanced breadiness to chew. Everything bagel was had slight sweet notes. They also had “flat” bagels which I assume have less bread in the middle since they looked more squished. Solid range of pastries, including black and white cookies. Staff was kind. Limited outdoor seating only. No line, ordering was straight to the point. Go here if you don’t want to deal with a long wait!

We ordered two lox sandwiches and two coffees. Staff was very kind and made sure to clarify our order. Wait time was 10+ minutes and a couple of people who ordered after us got their bagels first. Understandable since we got more additions to our bagels and it was Saturday morning. They have a huge selection of dairy and non-dairy cream cheeses. Coffee was very yummy and I would recommend the graham cracker coffee. I will definitely be coming here again!

It’s suck a nice little spot on Lenox Hills. I got a toasted poppyseed bagel, with lox, plain cream cheese and capers. The texture of bagel was very nice. The warmth, and slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside bagel went so well with the cold cream cheese and lox. They gave a generous amount of lox, cream cheese, and capers. I had all the ingredients in every bite until the last. It was a great bagel! The shop was a bit chaotic. You wait on a “line” to place your orders to one of the workers and then pay on a different “line.” It’s amazing what they can do in such a small place. Right behind the cashier, there is a big boiling pot and an oven, and that’s where they make their bagels! It’s great to see everything made in front of me. There is also a few tables outside of the shop to enjoy the bagel, but I choose to go to a nearby park instead.

The small store is located in the Lenox Hill section of Manhattan. They sell various bagels, spreads, lox, breakfast specials, sandwiches, salads, baked goods and beverages. They have no tables for dining in. I ordered several sesame and "everything" bagels. The bagels were a generous size with seeds on the top and bottom. I toasted the bagels and enjoyed the taste. Busy location during different times of the day.

Went for the first time today, and will not be going back. The bagels aren't good in both taste and texture for a NY bagel, and the cream cheese is way overpriced. Not too mention I wasn't feeling all that great shortly after having a bagel with scallion cream cheese.
