Nestled in the heart of the Upper East Side, Black Star Bakery & Cafe has established itself as a cornerstone of the local morning routine. Located at 1364 York Ave, this charming establishment brings a touch of artisanal craftsmanship to the 10021 zip code. Founded with a mission to merge high-quality, boutique baking with the warmth of a neighborhood gathering spot, Black Star has grown from its Brooklyn roots into a multi-location Manhattan favorite. For residents and professionals in the area, it serves as a reliable sanctuary where the aroma of freshly roasted coffee and warming pastries provides a welcome escape from the city’s relentless pace. Whether you are looking for a quick espresso to start your day or a quiet corner to enjoy a leisurely brunch, this cafe balances professional service with an inviting, "pretend it's the 90s" community vibe.
The aesthetic of the York Avenue branch reflects the brand's signature airy and photogenic design. With clean lines and a cozy interior, the space is optimized for both efficiency and comfort. While the New York City lifestyle often demands speed, Black Star encourages its patrons to linger just a little longer, often featuring a few tables that invite conversation. The staff is frequently praised for their helpful and efficient nature, often remembering the orders of the neighborhood regulars. In a region where coffee shops are plentiful, Black Star Bakery & Cafe stands out by prioritizing a personal touch and a diverse menu that caters to various dietary preferences and flavor profiles.
Location and Accessibility
The bakery is perfectly situated at 1364 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021, USA. Positioned between East 72nd and East 73rd Streets, it is ideally located for those navigating the Upper East Side’s residential corridors or visiting the nearby medical institutions like Weill Cornell and Memorial Sloan Kettering. This prime location makes it a popular pivot point for locals heading toward the East River Esplanade for a morning walk or a jog. The neighborhood itself is a blend of sophisticated residential charm and bustling professional activity, and Black Star caters seamlessly to both demographics.
Accessibility is a key feature of this location. For those utilizing the New York City subway system, the shop is a short walk from the 72nd Street station on the Q train (Second Avenue Subway), providing a direct and modern connection to the rest of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Additionally, the M15 and M15-SBS bus lines run along Second and First Avenues, offering frequent north-south transit options. The storefront is street-level and designed to be welcoming to all, including those with strollers or mobility aids. While the interior seating is limited—a common trait for Manhattan cafes—the layout is thoughtfully arranged to maximize the space available for both waiting customers and those lucky enough to snag a table.

When visiting Black Star Bakery & Cafe, the choice of order can truly define your experience. For those seeking a hearty, savory start to their day, the Breakfast Burrito is a local legend. It is consistently rated as one of the best in the city, perfectly balancing eggs, cheese, and a signature kick from sriracha mayo. For a lighter, more refreshing snack, the Matcha Lemonade provides a unique earthy-yet-sweet balance that is particularly enjoyable during a stroll through the neighborhood. Whether you are opting for a classic lox bagel or a more experimental hazelnut croissant, pairing your food with their strong, expertly made espresso ensures a quintessential New York cafe experience. Choosing to sit by the window with a warm americano and a fresh muffin is perhaps the best way to soak in the local Upper East Side atmosphere.

Grabbed a medley of baked goods for breakfast this morning. I will start off with the leek danish, which was fine, a bit bland. The mushroom "burek" was really bad, the dough was under baked, I had to spit out half unfortunately. The zaatar croissant and the chocolate hazelnut croissant had decent flavor but were just an elevated Starbucks croissant, pretty disappointing. I will say the pumpkin cheese pastry was the best, good flavor and decent bake. All in all I probably wouldnt come back as the pastries were not worth it. Plenty of better bakeries in the area. But the service and cafe atmosphere were nice.
