Baker's Dozen Bagels Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the heart of Queens, specifically within the historic and charming neighborhood of Kew Gardens, Baker's Dozen Bagels has established itself as a quintessential destination for lovers of the classic New York breakfast. This local institution is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a community staple that embodies the high standards New Yorkers hold for their morning staples. In a city where everyone has a strong opinion on what makes the perfect bagel, Baker's Dozen Bagels consistently rises to the top by focusing on the traditional techniques that create the ideal texture: a distinctively crispy exterior paired with a light, chewy center.
The shop caters to a diverse crowd, from long-time residents who have made this their daily ritual to visitors exploring the unique Tudor-style architecture of the surrounding area. Whether you are looking for a classic schmear or a sophisticated sandwich loaded with smoked fish, the shop offers a menu that honors the past while acknowledging modern dietary needs. The atmosphere is bustling and efficient, capturing the vibrant energy of a true New York bagel shop where the staff works with precision to keep the lines moving, even during the busiest weekend rushes. It is a place where the aroma of toasted malts and savory seasonings greets you at the door, promising a fresh start to your day.
Location and Accessibility
Baker's Dozen Bagels is conveniently located at 81-09 Lefferts Blvd, Kew Gardens, NY 11415, USA. Situated on Lefferts Boulevard, one of the neighborhood's primary commercial corridors, the shop is exceptionally easy to find. This location is particularly strategic for commuters, as it is just a short walk from the Kew Gardens Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) station and within easy reach of the E and F subway lines at the Union Turnpike-Kew Gardens station. For those who live in the local apartment buildings or nearby Forest Hills, the shop is a pleasant walking destination.
The storefront is nestled among a variety of local boutiques and services, making it a natural stop for those running errands on the weekend. While street parking on Lefferts Boulevard can be competitive—as is typical for any thriving Queens neighborhood—the high foot traffic and proximity to public transit make it highly accessible. The shop is well-integrated into the fabric of the neighborhood, serving as a landmark for locals who appreciate having high-quality, freshly baked goods right in their backyard. Because of its popularity, visitors should be aware that the shop can get quite busy during peak hours, particularly on Saturday and Sunday mornings, so planning for a short wait is often part of the authentic experience.

Features / Highlights
What sets Baker's Dozen Bagels apart in the competitive New York bagel scene are the specific details that elevate the customer experience. Key highlights include:
- Perfect Texture Profile: Their bagels are celebrated for achieving the "golden ratio" of bagel making—a crispy outer crust with a chewy and light interior.
- Superior Lox and Capers: For fans of the classic Nova lox sandwich, the shop is known for using fresh, high-quality fish and providing a perfect balance of ingredients.
- Exceptional Vegan Options: A standout feature is their vegetable tofu cream cheese, which is so popular that even non-vegans often purchase it by the half-pound to take home.
- Proper Schmear Ratio: Unlike some shops that overwhelm the bagel with too much cream cheese, Baker's Dozen is praised for applying a generous yet balanced amount of spread.
- The Egg Everything Bagel: A local favorite, their Egg Everything bagel provides a rich, savory base that complements almost any topping.
- Community Atmosphere: A friendly, professional environment where staff greet regulars and manage the "busy but prepared" pace typical of a New York favorite.

What is worth choosing
If you are looking for the definitive Baker's Dozen experience, you should prioritize the Egg Everything bagel. This particular variety offers a slightly richer dough and a dense coating of seasonings that provides a savory punch in every bite. To take it to the next level, many patrons recommend the Nova lox sandwich. When ordered with cream cheese and capers, it provides a perfectly balanced salty and creamy profile that showcases the quality of their ingredients. It is a high-protein, indulgent breakfast that remains light enough to enjoy on the go.
For those who follow a plant-based diet or are lactose intolerant, the choice is clear: the vegetable tofu cream cheese. It has earned a reputation for being "spot on," mimicking the texture of traditional cream cheese while providing the fresh, crunchy snap of garden vegetables. It is so well-executed that it is frequently bought in half-pound containers for home consumption. Regardless of your dietary preferences, it is worth noting that while the service is generally quick, during peak times the line can result in a 15-minute wait. This wait is a small price to pay for a product that many locals rate a "10/10." If you find yourself in Kew Gardens, making a stop at Baker's Dozen Bagels is the best way to ensure you are getting a genuine, high-quality New York bagel that lives up to the hype.
In summary, Baker's Dozen Bagels is a shining example of a local business that does one thing exceptionally well. By mastering the art of the New York bagel and ensuring there are delicious options for everyone—including a robust vegan menu—they have secured their place as a top-tier breakfast destination in Queens. Whether you are grabbing a single bagel for the train or stocking up for a family brunch, you are guaranteed a product that is fresh, authentic, and satisfying.

Had an Egg-Everything bagel with cream cheese, Nova lox, and capers. So delicious! Just the perfect balance of crispy outer, chewy & light inside. Plenty of cream cheese, but not way too much, like a lot of places. I was in and out very quickly.

Absolutely delicious vegan options for someone who is lactose intolerant. The vegetable tofu cream cheese was spot on with the egg everything bagel. It was so good that I had to buy a separate 1/2 pound to go! 10/10 would get it again. It can get busy so be prepared to wait up to 15 minutes.

Stopped by this bagel shop recently and had a great experience. The food was really good, the staff were friendly, and the service was quick. The place has an old-school vibe that you don’t see much anymore, and the bagels are the real New York style—fresh, classic, and done right. Overall, a great spot if you’re looking for a solid bagel and a good atmosphere. Definitely recommend.

If you’re in the Kew Gardens area of queens, stop by bakers dozen and grab some freshly made bagels in house! A long time visitor to this shop whenever I am in the area and it’s a neighborhood gem. Go early to avoid long lines but well worth the wait I tries there the strawberry cream cheese spread recently and it was amazing. Go check it out and thank me later

I really wanted to love this place, as I was looking for a good bagel spot in the area and this looked promising. But I will definitely not be returning. Red flag #1: I asked for a bagel with 1/2 egg salad and 1/2 tuna salad. I've successfully ordered this at many other bagel places but here, I was told that I might as well get 2 separate bagels because I'll be charged for 2... How does that make ANY sense?? I offered to pay for whatever the more expensive filling was but after too many minutes of back and forth and trying to get a clear answer about a reasonable price, I gave up and went with a single filing. Reg flag #2: In addition to my bagel, I ordered one for my friend, and she has a known severe reaction to preservatives. (We stick to places with simple ingredients for this reason when we go out.) Her bagel simply had cream cheese, an egg, and lettuce/tomato... But needless to say, she had a severe reaction, including diarrhea about an hour after eating this (and this is the only thing she ate). She's had this same combination at other places with no problem, so I'm not sure what exactly they used in one of the ingredients but if you have any sensitivity to preservatives, I would stay away. The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because the bagels were pretty good. My egg salad was oddly over salted but the serving size was generous. Just wish I had a better experience overall.
