The Hungarian Pastry Shop Introduce
In the quiet, intellectual corridors of Morningside Heights, New York, there exists a sanctuary that has stood the test of time, serving as a beacon for writers, students, and dessert enthusiasts for decades. The Hungarian Pastry Shop is not merely a bakery; it is a cultural institution. Located across the street from the magnificent Cathedral of St. John the Divine, this shop offers an old-world charm that is increasingly rare in the fast-paced, modern landscape of Manhattan. For those who live in the Upper West Side or attend the nearby universities, it is a place of ritual—a spot where the clink of coffee cups mingles with the scratching of pens and the rhythmic tapping of laptop keys.
The atmosphere of The Hungarian Pastry Shop is one of its most defining characteristics. Stepping inside feels like being transported to a mid-century European cafe. The walls are often adorned with the book jackets of authors who purportedly wrote their masterpieces while sitting at these very tables. It is a professional yet cozy environment that encourages lingering. Unlike many New York establishments that rush customers out to flip tables, the staff here is famously kind and accommodating, maintaining a welcoming spirit that makes it a "home away from home" for the academic community and local residents alike. Whether you are seeking a solitary corner to read or a communal space to meet with peers, this shop provides a backdrop of warmth and history.
Location and Accessibility
The Hungarian Pastry Shop is perfectly situated at 1030 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10025, USA, at the corner of 111th Street. This location is the heart of Morningside Heights, making it exceptionally accessible for the Columbia University, Barnard College, and Manhattan School of Music communities. Because it sits directly across from one of the largest cathedrals in the world, it is also a frequent stop for tourists who are exploring the historic landmarks of Northern Manhattan.
For those utilizing public transportation, the shop is a short walk from the 110th Street - Cathedral Parkway station, served by the 1 subway line. Additionally, several bus routes, including the M11 and M4, run directly along Amsterdam Avenue and nearby Broadway, providing easy access from both the Upper West Side and Harlem. For New Yorkers who enjoy a scenic route, the shop is only a couple of blocks away from the northern edge of Central Park and the lush greenery of Morningside Park. While the entrance can be a bit busy—and locals know that sitting too close to the door in the winter can be chilly due to the constant flow of patrons—the accessibility of the shop remains a major draw for the neighborhood.

What is worth choosing
When it comes to the menu at The Hungarian Pastry Shop, there are several items that have achieved legendary status among locals. If you are a fan of traditional cakes, the Carrot Cake is widely considered the best in the city. It is moist, flavorful, and perfectly spiced, making it a top choice for birthday celebrations. For those who enjoy a unique twist on classics, the pumpkin pie and cheesecake mix is often cited as the best dessert on the menu, offering a creamy and seasonal flavor profile that patrons return for year after year.
The Almond Horns are another absolute must-try. These are expertly crafted, providing a delightful crunch and rich almond flavor that pairs perfectly with their strong coffee. For a more bready treat, the raisin bun is a well-accomplished choice, offering a better texture and moisture level than some of the other bun varieties. While the shop offers a wide array of pastries, local regulars suggest leaning into the items they are most famous for—the cakes and the Viennese-style treats. Pairing your dessert with their coffee, served in a classic carafe, is the definitive way to experience the shop. Whether you are stopping in for a quick almond horn or settling in for a long afternoon of writing with a slice of carrot cake, choosing The Hungarian Pastry Shop is a choice to participate in a storied New York tradition that continues to thrive in the heart of Morningside Heights.

The Hungarian Pastry Shop Reviews

I’ve been a few times at this cafeteria and I’ve also gotten desserts to bring home: - the pumpkin pie and cheese cake mix is the best dessert they have. - the balaclava isn’t close to the real middle eastern balaclava and I don’t ever order it again. - the cardamon bun is dried while the raisins bun is better accomplished. - the tables at the back lack natural light. - if you sit near the entrance, the door keeps being opened/closed and it gets very annoying (and cold during winter). - the prices are high but the quantity is also large. - the staff is very kind and they will let you use your laptop. I’ll keep coming and suggesting to meet there with university peers

Best carrot cake I’ve had. Made a special one for my gf’s birthday with less than a day turnaround. Thank you! Almond horns are amazing too! Very friend service!

This coffee shop and bakery is well known for a reason. I’ve been coming here for years, and the quality of their drinks and baked goods have remained consistently amazing, and you can tell everything is made with care. My favorites are their cappuccino topped with cinnamon, carrot cake, and linzer cookies. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything. On the weekends, be prepared for a line and a bustling crowd inside. It’s worth it!

Hyped up pastry shop near Columbia University. The interior is cool, the waiting line long, the staff remains lovely. The pastries and cakes were nice, but to be honest, I would not travel across town just for that purpose.

Even tho this picture resembles the aftermath of the 300 battle scene, it has nothing to do with the pastry I had. The cappuccino was foamy and with great texture and the danish was insanely good. Don’t mind me. Will come back.
