Bakewell Introduce
In the vibrant heart of South Richmond Hill, Queens, few places capture the essence of the neighborhood's rich Guyanese heritage quite like Bakewell. For New Yorkers living along the bustling corridor of Liberty Avenue, this establishment is a sensory landmark. The moment you step through its doors, you are greeted by the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked tennis rolls and the savory, spiced steam rising from hot plates of chow mein. Bakewell has firmly established itself as more than just a bakery; it is a culinary bridge to the Caribbean, offering a taste of authentic Georgetown right here in the five boroughs. In a city where authenticity is the ultimate currency, Bakewell delivers a professional yet deeply communal experience that resonates with both the West Indian diaspora and adventurous foodies alike.
For those unacquainted with the area, South Richmond Hill—often referred to as "Little Guyana"—is a neighborhood defined by its energy and its food. Bakewell sits at the center of this cultural hub, acting as a reliable anchor for families, commuters, and students. The establishment operates with a unique hybrid model that is quintessential to New York: it is part bakery, part casual restaurant, and entirely focused on comfort. Whether you are stopping in for a quick loaf of bread for the dinner table or sitting down for a heavy midday meal, the atmosphere is consistently friendly, welcoming, and undeniably fast-paced, reflecting the true spirit of Queens.
Location and Accessibility
Bakewell is conveniently located at 127-08 Liberty Ave, South Richmond Hill, NY 11419, USA. This specific stretch of Liberty Avenue is one of the most active commercial zones in the borough, making the bakery an incredibly accessible spot for locals and visitors. For New Yorkers navigating via public transit, the location is a dream; it is situated within easy walking distance of the A train (Lefferts Blvd station), which serves as the primary artery connecting this part of Queens to Brooklyn and Manhattan. Additionally, the Q112 bus runs directly along Liberty Avenue, dropping passengers off mere steps from the bakery’s entrance.
For those traveling by car, the bakery is positioned near major roadways like the Van Wyck Expressway and the Belt Parkway, though as any local will tell you, parking on Liberty Avenue requires a bit of New York patience. The storefront is brightly lit and prominently featured, making it easy to spot even during the high-traffic evening rush. Its accessibility makes it a popular "pit stop" for those heading home after a long day of work, looking to pick up a warm bag of pastries or a hearty container of fried rice to share with their family.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Bakewell, the first thing any regular will tell you to choose is the bread. Their tennis rolls are a neighborhood legend—soft, slightly sweet, and the perfect vessel for cheese or butter. If you are planning a Sunday breakfast or a holiday gathering, picking up a dozen of these is almost a requirement. Along the same lines, their plait bread is a consistent winner for its texture and freshness. For those with a sweet tooth, the selection of pastries is excellent; look for items that are light and flaky, which local patrons describe as having "just the right amount of sweet."
If you are coming in for a meal, the roast lamb fried rice and chicken chow mein are the undisputed stars of the savory menu. The lamb is frequently noted for being tender and perfectly spiced, while the chow mein offers a nostalgic balance of seasonings and vegetables that transport you directly to a Guyanese kitchen. To wash it all down, the peanut punch is a must-order. Rich, creamy, and satisfying, it is the quintessential beverage to pair with their spicy entrees. While some long-time fans have noted occasional inconsistencies with specialty items like the cassava pone, the core bakery items and fried rice dishes remain the reliable "go-to" choices that have built Bakewell’s formidable reputation in Queens. For the best experience, don't be afraid to ask for Fazee, whose amazing customer service has become a highlight of the Bakewell experience for many New Yorkers.
Ultimately, choosing Bakewell means choosing a piece of the local culture. In the competitive food landscape of New York, a business only survives by being the best at what they do, and Bakewell’s longevity on Liberty Avenue is a testament to their skill. Whether you are there for the savory "authentic Guyanese taste" or the softest bread in Richmond Hill, you are guaranteed a meal made with care and a service experience that feels like home.

I stopped by Bakewell in Richmond Hill and was blown away by how good the food was! I ordered the chicken chow mein, roast lamb fried rice, a selection of pastries, and a peanut punch — everything was fresh, flavorful, and full of that authentic Guyanese taste. The chicken chow mein had the perfect balance of seasoning and veggies, and the roast lamb fried rice was absolutely delicious — tender lamb with great spice. The pastries were light, flaky, and just the right amount of sweet, and the peanut punch was rich and creamy, just how it should be! The staff were friendly and the service was quick. Definitely one of the best spots in Queens for real Guyanese comfort food. I’ll be back soon! 🇬🇾✨ ps: Ask for Fazee, her customer service is amazing 🤩

Love Bakewell! It’s my go-to spot for bread, tennis rolls, and especially their chicken fried rice, absolutely love it! My husband usually gets the cassava pone, but lately, it’s been pretty disappointing—almost inedible. Hoping they bring back the quality we’re used to!

From the moment I walked into this bakery, I was greeted with a smile and genuine warmth. The customer service is truly exceptional—everyone is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel right at home. You can tell they really care about their customers and take pride in what they do. I ordered last minute for my mom’s wake night and they made it happen WITH HASSLE FREE DELIVERY that arrived earlier than “on time” haha. Many thanks to Fazie, such a kind person! This bakery has become one of my favorite places to visit—not just for the pastries and food but for the welcoming atmosphere and outstanding service. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a bakery with incredible food and even better people!

I was disappointed with my recent order from this restaurant. I ordered the fish cakes, but they were made with sardines and the presentation was very poor—each piece was a different shape and size. For the price, I expect better quality and consistency. What’s even more frustrating is that the individual fish cakes sold at the counter are completely different than the ones you receive when ordering them in a tray. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I wouldn’t recommend this place.
