Black Seed Bagels | Long Island City Introduce
In a city where the bagel is a sacred culinary institution, Black Seed Bagels has carved out a unique and prestigious niche by blending two of the world’s most famous traditions: the New York style and the Montreal style. Located in the rapidly growing neighborhood of Long Island City, this shop offers a sophisticated departure from the oversized, doughy rounds found in standard delis. Black Seed Bagels | Long Island City brings an artisanal touch to the Queens waterfront, providing a product that is hand-rolled, boiled in honey-infused water, and finished in a wood-fired oven. This meticulous process creates a flavor profile that is distinctively smoky, slightly sweet, and perfectly balanced, making it a destination for those who appreciate the finer details of craft baking.
For the residents of Long Island City and the surrounding boroughs, Black Seed represents the modern evolution of the New York breakfast. The shop maintains a friendly and professional atmosphere that mirrors the upbeat energy of the neighborhood. While many shops rely on tradition alone, Black Seed focuses on a high-quality, curated experience where customer service is as important as the crust of the bagel. Local patrons frequently comment on the welcoming environment, noting that the staff goes above and beyond to ensure every order—from a simple schmear to a complex breakfast sandwich—is executed to perfection. It is this combination of world-class baking and genuine hospitality that has earned the shop a loyal following among the most discerning bagel enthusiasts in the city.
The shop is situated at 5-18 50th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101, USA. This location is strategically placed in the heart of one of LIC’s most walkable and vibrant residential areas. For those living in the luxury towers or the classic brownstones of Hunters Point, Black Seed is often just a short morning stroll away. Its proximity to the waterfront parks makes it an ideal stop for those planning a breakfast picnic with views of the Manhattan skyline. Accessibility is a major draw, as the shop is located near key transit points, including the Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av subway station, making it a convenient pit stop for commuters heading into Midtown Manhattan or North Brooklyn.
Navigating to Black Seed Bagels is straightforward for both locals and visitors. The shop sits on 50th Avenue, a street known for its local charm and collection of independent eateries. Whether you are coming from across the street or making a dedicated trip from another part of the city, the shop’s presence adds to the neighborhood's reputation as a premier food destination. For residents who might live near other famous institutions, many find that the unique texture and superior service at this 50th Avenue location make it well worth the walk, bypassing closer options for the specific "Black Seed" experience.
Black Seed Bagels | Long Island City offers a diverse menu that caters to both the morning rush and the leisurely weekend brunch crowd. Their services are designed to provide flexibility and rewards for their regular customers. The services offered include:
- Hand-rolled, wood-fired bagel production featuring a signature hybrid New York-Montreal style.
- Made-to-order breakfast sandwiches, including the popular Bacon, Egg, and Cheese (BEC) varieties.
- A wide selection of house-made spreads and artisanal toppings, ranging from classic cream cheese to smoked salmon.
- Digital ordering and payment integration via the InKind app, which allows customers to earn rewards on their purchases.
- Fast-casual dine-in space and efficient takeout service for the busy New York professional.
- Customized order fulfillment with a focus on accuracy and customer-service-oriented staff.
- Catering options for local offices and residential gatherings within the Long Island City area.
The shop is defined by several key features and highlights that set it apart from the hundreds of other bagel shops in the five boroughs. These highlights reflect the brand's commitment to quality and the specific culture of the LIC branch:
- The "Perfect Bite": The bagels are specifically praised for achieving a crisp exterior and a soft, non-dry interior that is easy to bite through without excessive tugging.
- Wood-Fired Oven: Unlike most shops that use standard revolving ovens, the use of wood fire imparts a unique charred flavor and a superior crust.
- Exceptional Staff: Team members like Cindy are frequently highlighted for their upbeat, helpful, and customer-oriented approach to service.
- Boutique Size: The bagels are smaller and more dense than "mall-style" bagels, focusing on quality and flavor density over sheer volume.
- Loyalty Rewards: By using modern payment platforms like InKind, frequent visitors can manage their breakfast budget more effectively through earned credits.
- Freshness Guarantee: The small-batch baking process ensures that the product being served has not been sitting in a bin for hours.

When deciding what is worth choosing at Black Seed Bagels, the first-time visitor should look no further than the classic Bacon, Egg, and Cheese (BEC) on an everything bagel. While some patrons note that the prices are higher than a standard street-corner bodega and the sizes are more "artisanal" (meaning smaller and more compact), the amazing taste and flavor depth justify the occasional splurge. The "everything" seasoning at Black Seed is particularly flavorful, benefitting from the toasting it receives in the wood-fired oven. The eggs are cooked to a perfect consistency, and the bacon adds the necessary salty crunch to complement the honey-boiled dough.
For the true connoisseur, the plain or sesame bagel with a simple cream cheese spread is the best way to appreciate the craftsmanship of the bread itself. Because the "bite comes right off" and the interior remains soft and moist, you don't need a mountain of toppings to enjoy the experience. If you are a frequent visitor, it is highly recommended to pay through the InKind app to take advantage of the rewards system, making the premium pricing much more manageable over time. Whether you are looking for a quick breakfast before the 7 train or a leisurely treat on a sunny afternoon, choosing Black Seed means choosing what many consider to be the best bagel in New York City—a bold claim that the shop backs up with every wood-fired batch.

I ordered the bec bagel for breakfast. Only thing that is bad is the price. Its a bit pricey for a bagel thats small sized. The taste is amazing, so flaverful and would recommend to try but not rarely. Also the stuff is very friendly and helpful.

The best bagels in NYC!! I’ve tried them all and Black Seed is the best. Their bagel is the perfect size and they achieve the quintessence of the perfect bagel: when you bit into it the outside is crisp and the inside is soft (not dry) and the bite comes right off (you don’t have to tug at the bread). The staff here is so friendly and upbeat and customer-service oriented. Cindy helped me today and ensured my order was perfect! I live across the street from utopia bagels (skip that spot) but come to Black Seed because they are so much better. Worth the morning walk! And they have rewards if you pay through the InKind app. Thank you Cindy for your excellent service!

Fantastic place and right near the subway so perfect for a grab and go. Service is fast and friendly and you can see the staff making fresh bagels regularly in the back. There’s about 4-5 tables to sit. Their veggie bagel are what dreams are made of - so many fresh crunchy veggies and the capers add such a nice twist to it. It’s my favorite veggie bagel I’ve had in a long time.

I order a bagel from here several times a week. It's good for what it is. However, I'd like to make one suggestion specifically for pick-up orders: stop using staples! When the bag is ripped open, we have to stick our hands into the bag and possible get poked by them. Who thought this was a good idea? Can I recommend that you guys just use scotch tape?

Delicious and filling bagel sandwiches!! (Fave was the BEC) The bagels here are a mix of NY/Montreal style! The bagels themselves are not too thick and have a great crispy crust. Staff is really friendly. I’m excited for a new bagel place in the neighborhood!
