Bread Alone Bakery - Tompkins Square Introduce
For New Yorkers who prioritize sustainability and artisanal quality, Bread Alone Bakery has become a cornerstone of the weekly food ritual in the East Village. Operating as a standout vendor at the GrowNYC Tompkins Square Greenmarket, this Hudson Valley-based institution brings a slice of upstate heritage to the heart of Manhattan. Founded in 1983, long before "organic" became a mainstream buzzword, Bread Alone was built on the simple yet profound mission of serving honest food while minimizing harm to the planet. For locals navigating the vibrant Sunday morning energy of Avenue A, the Bread Alone tent is a destination where the aroma of naturally leavened grains and wood-fired crusts serves as a reminder of the slow-food movement’s enduring appeal.
The bakery is deeply rooted in the traditions of European sourdough production, utilizing long fermentation processes that not only enhance flavor but also promote better gut health. By sourcing regionally grown, organic grains and partnering with Northeast millers, Bread Alone ensures that every loaf tells a story of local agriculture and environmental stewardship. Their commitment to the planet is further evidenced by their carbon-neutral status and the recent launch of a fully electrified, fossil-fuel-free bakery in the Catskills. In the bustling landscape of New York City bakeries, Bread Alone stands out by balancing large-scale production with the soul of a small-town village baker, making high-quality, climate-conscious bread accessible to the urban public.
Location and Accessibility
Bread Alone Bakery finds its New York City home every Sunday at the Tompkins Square Greenmarket. The market is located at the intersection of Avenue A and East 7th Street, hugging the southwest corner of the historic Tompkins Square Park. This location is a central gathering point for the East Village community, providing a picturesque backdrop of greenery and local life. The bakery operates at this site year-round, rain or shine, typically serving customers from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. However, frequent patrons know that because of its popularity, the stand often sells out of its most sought-after items well before closing time.
Accessibility is a hallmark of this location. It is easily reachable for those living in the East Village, Alphabet City, and the Lower East Side. For those traveling from further afield, the bakery is a short walk from the 1st Avenue L-train station and within reasonable distance of the Astor Place (6 train) and 8th Street-NYU (R and W trains) stations. The walk-up nature of the Greenmarket makes it a perfect stop for residents out with their dogs or families enjoying a Sunday morning in the park. While the market environment is fast-paced, the Bread Alone team is known for their dependable presence, helping to anchor the weekend culinary experience for the neighborhood.

What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at the Bread Alone tent on a Sunday morning, the Whole Wheat Miche is an absolute must-purchase. This impressively large, wood-fired loaf is both nutty and sour, benefiting from a 26-hour fermentation period. It is available in quarters and halves for those who don't want to commit to a full loaf, and its hearty crust and tight crumb make it the perfect base for everything from avocado toast to a rustic dinner side. For those seeking something even more substantial, the Rye Brod is a standout—a dense, 100% whole grain rye that captures the deep, earthy flavors typical of Nordic baking traditions.
For those with a sweet tooth or dietary preferences, the Vegan Chocolate Pound Cake is a revelation. It is frequently cited by regulars for its moist, fluffy texture and rich flavor that belies its plant-based ingredients. If you are looking for a quick snack while browsing the market, the Chocolate Walnut Cookie is highly recommended for its crumbly texture and generous chunks of chocolate. One important tip for market-goers: while most local vendors are flexible, Bread Alone has been known to strictly enforce a credit card minimum for digital transactions, so carrying a bit of cash or ensuring your "cart" reaches the minimum is a smart move to avoid disappointment. Whether you are there for the heritage grains or the sustainable mission, choosing Bread Alone means bringing home a product that is as good for the planet as it is for your table.

Bread Alone Bakery - Tompkins Square Reviews
-
This is a review of Bread Alone tent at Forest Hills Sunday Greenmarket. Poor service for such a pricey product. A family bodega will accept a credit card for their $1.5 coffee, as will small $.99 stores - those guys get very adamant about their $5 min - they’ll actually let you abandon cart over this. Well, less calories for me.

Bread Alone Bakery is a well-regarded organic bakery that comes to the GrowNYC Tompkins Square Greenmarket on Sundays from 9:00am-4:00pm, often selling out of most items before closing. The bakery uses local organic grains in the breads and ingredients from local farms in the Hudson Valley. Many of the breads use a natural sourdough starter without yeast. The breads and baked goods are available loose (preferred) or in retail packaging. I'd recommend the whole wheat miche sourdough bread and very dense and hearty whole grain rye brod, and the vegan chocolate pound cake. You can find the ingredients to all the breads and baked goods on Bread Alone's website.
