They over charge to the max. I originally went in for some sweet bread and I ordered four cookies which weren't the same size at all, smaller than average for cookies more like mini cookies that were priced at 4 x 2.35. A small bodega tasting coffee for 2.25. A can of coke with a cup of ice I didn't ask for to go for 3.50 and not sure howuch exactly they charged me for the half empty plain chicken plate. The chicken churrasco was in the beginning to stay with a can of coke. I ask for the can of coke to be accompanied by ice as a normal customer dining in a restaurant wouldn't even have to ask for. I heard the lady giving the total and she literally charged me for a cup of ice! Never in my life have I dined somewhere and they charge me for ice! When I heard that I took it to go and this is what I got. Pretty much 30 bucks after tipping upfront as well. NEVER AGAIN. Taste wise it was ok but not worth the money. They can do better. The lady with the salt and pepper short bob will sell you a dream thats not real. She talks a good game but the food and presentation isn't how she puts it 🙄💯 - Tee

El Cafetal Bakery Introduce

In the vibrant and culturally diverse landscape of Queens, New York, local bakeries serve as essential hubs for community interaction and culinary exploration. El Cafetal Bakery, situated in the heart of the Jamaica and Richmond Hill area, is one such establishment that brings the specific and beloved flavors of Colombia to the residents of New York City. For those living in the five boroughs, finding an authentic spot for a morning caffeine fix or a traditional Latin American dessert is a top priority, and El Cafetal has positioned itself as a recognizable name along the busy Jamaica Avenue corridor. This bakery represents the intersection of traditional South American baking techniques and the fast-paced, demanding lifestyle of New York urbanites.

The allure of a Colombian bakery often lies in its ability to provide a sensory escape through the aroma of high-altitude beans and the sight of golden-crusted pastries. El Cafetal Bakery aims to provide exactly that, catering to a clientele that appreciates the rich heritage of Colombian coffee and the intricate textures of traditional sweets. In a neighborhood where residents are well-versed in international cuisines, the bakery offers a localized experience that reflects the demographics of the surrounding community. It serves as a reminder of the small-scale "panaderias" found in Medellín or Bogotá, adapted for the bustling streets of Queens. Whether you are a long-time resident of Jamaica or just passing through the neighborhood, the bakery offers a glimpse into the regional specialties that define Colombian breakfast and snack culture.

However, navigating the local food scene in New York requires a balance of expectations and reality. El Cafetal Bakery provides a professional yet straightforward atmosphere where the focus remains on the core products: coffee and cake. Like many neighborhood spots in the city, it has its own unique character and operational style. While it provides a taste of home for many in the Colombian diaspora, it also offers an adventurous stop for foodies looking to broaden their horizons. As with any local business in a competitive market like New York City, the bakery continues to serve its regular patrons while navigating the complexities of service and pricing in an ever-changing economic environment.

Location and Accessibility

El Cafetal Bakery is located at 102-25 Jamaica Ave, Jamaica, NY 11418, USA. This specific location is highly advantageous for commuters and locals alike, as it sits on one of the longest and busiest commercial strips in Queens. Jamaica Avenue is a primary artery for the borough, and the bakery is positioned in a section that bridges the gap between the Richmond Hill and Jamaica neighborhoods. This makes it a convenient stop for those utilizing the nearby public transportation options, including various MTA bus lines that run along the avenue and the proximity to the J and Z subway lines.

For New Yorkers traveling by foot, the bakery is easily accessible and features a prominent storefront that is hard to miss. The surrounding area is a dense urban environment characterized by high foot traffic, ensuring that the bakery is always at the center of the local action. While street parking on Jamaica Avenue can be notoriously difficult—a common trait for most busy NYC neighborhoods—there are often side streets and metered spots available for those who are making a quick stop. Its central location ensures that it is a viable option for those living nearby or for professionals working in the various commercial buildings that line this historic Queens thoroughfare.

What is worth choosing

For those visiting El Cafetal Bakery for the first time, it is highly recommended to lean into their traditional Colombian strengths. The Colombian coffee is widely considered the highlight of the menu. It offers a robust and authentic flavor profile that many locals find superior to the standard coffee found in typical New York bodegas. It is the perfect accompaniment to a morning pastry or as a midday pick-me-up while walking along Jamaica Avenue. The coffee experience here is about simplicity and tradition, focusing on the quality of the bean rather than complex syrups or additives.

In addition to the coffee, the Tres Leches cakes are a signature item that is worth trying. This classic dessert, which translates to "three milks," is a staple of Latin American baking, and El Cafetal takes pride in their version of it. It is known for having the right balance of sweetness and moisture without being overly heavy. For those looking for a quick snack, the sweet bread selection offers a variety of textures and flavors that are quintessential to a Colombian bakery experience. While some patrons have noted inconsistencies with pricing and service on savory plates, sticking to the bakery and coffee staples generally yields the most satisfying results for the price. If you are in the mood for a simple New York breakfast, their egg and cheese on a roll is a reliable option, though it is always wise to double-check the current daily pricing to ensure a smooth transaction. Overall, for a true taste of Colombia in the heart of Jamaica, Queens, the coffee and cake remain the primary reasons to pay a visit to El Cafetal.
