GRANDPA CHEN CHAR SIU BAO OAKLAND GARDENS Introduce
In the quiet yet bustling residential enclave of Oakland Gardens, Queens, a new local favorite has emerged to satisfy the cravings of those seeking authentic Cantonese-style baked goods. Grandpa Chen Char Siu Bao Oakland Gardens is a specialized bakery that brings the traditional flavors of Hong Kong and Southern China to the New York suburbs. For residents of Eastern Queens, this establishment represents more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a destination for high-quality, freshly baked "Bao" (buns) and pastries that rival the offerings found in the larger Chinatowns of Flushing or Manhattan. The bakery has quickly built a loyal following by focusing on the core elements of the craft: soft dough, savory fillings, and a commitment to freshness that keeps customers returning week after week.
Grandpa Chen has expanded its footprint from its original roots in Little Neck to this convenient Oakland Gardens location, maintaining the high standards that regular patrons have come to expect. The atmosphere of the shop is designed for efficiency and cleanliness. While it doesn't aim to be a "high-end" restaurant in terms of decor, it provides a bright, well-lit, and welcoming environment that is perfect for families and commuters. The owner is known for a personal touch, often recognizing frequent customers and fostering a neighborhood feel that is sometimes lost in larger commercial bakeries. This combination of professional service and friendly, community-oriented management makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to explore the rich world of Chinese baking without leaving the 11364 zip code.
Location and Accessibility
Grandpa Chen Char Siu Bao is located at 61-17 Springfield Blvd, Oakland Gardens, NY 11364, USA. This location is particularly advantageous for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods like Bayside, Douglaston, and Hollis Hills. Situated on Springfield Boulevard, one of the major north-south thoroughfares in Eastern Queens, the bakery is easy to find and highly accessible by car. For New Yorkers, one of the biggest challenges of local shopping is often the lack of convenient vehicle access, but this establishment addresses that concern head-on. A major highlight for visitors is the dedicated parking available in the back of the building, which simplifies the experience for those stopping by for a large "haul" of buns to take home.
Accessibility also extends to the physical layout of the store, which is clean and organized to allow for a quick "grab-and-go" experience. Whether you are driving down from the Long Island Expressway or taking a local bus through the Springfield Boulevard corridor, the shop's position makes it a seamless stop during a daily commute or a weekend errand run. What is worth choosing
If it is your first time visiting Grandpa Chen Char Siu Bao, the absolute priority should be the Roasted Pork Bun (Char Siu Bao). These are the foundation of the bakery's reputation, featuring a pillowy-soft dough and a rich, savory filling that hits all the right notes of traditional Cantonese cuisine. For a slightly different twist on the classic, the Pineapple Bun with Roasted Pork is a standout choice. This item combines the sweet, crumbly topping of a traditional pineapple bun with the savory meat filling, creating a complex flavor profile that is both soft, sweet, and savory all at once.
For those with a sweet tooth, the Egg Tarts are highly recommended. Patrons often describe them as having a perfectly flaky crust and a creamy custard center that isn't cloying. If you are looking for more unique or modern flavors, the Matcha and York-flavored buns are popular among local residents, though the matcha flavor is a more specific taste that appeals to those who enjoy green tea's earthy notes. Pairing your selection with their signature milk tea is a great way to complete the experience. Given the convenience of the parking in the back, it is worth choosing a variety of buns to take home; many customers find that these pastries hold up well and are just as delicious when enjoyed on a comfy sofa later in the day. Whether you are a frequent customer or a first-time visitor, the consistency of the food and the friendliness of the owner make this Oakland Gardens bakery a top-tier destination for Cantonese treats.

Has been a frequent customer of Grandpa Chen in Little Neck. Was around the area and decide to give this one a visit. The Roasted Pork Bun is amazing as usual, I also buy the pineapple, york, and the matcha flavor. My wife like the york and matcha more, me personally like all of them except the matcha one. Brought two bag worth of buns home to enjoy it on the comfy sofa at home (and for my wife). I missed the deal by one day, apparently it ended on Sunday, but the store owner recognized me and gave me a small discount. Lol I guess I really do go a lot. Can't say much about the atmosphere (lighting is bright I guess), certainly can't compare it to high end restaurants, but good enough for what it's doing. Anyway, wish you 生意興隆, and thanks for the discount!

Just went to Grandpa Chen and everything was phenomenal. The roast pork bun was delicious, and the pineapple bun with roast pork was an absolute standout—soft, sweet, and savory all at once. Paired it with a perfectly sweet milk tea, which tied it all together. The space was clean and the atmosphere very welcoming. Parking in the back made it AMAZING. My daughter absolutely loved the egg tart—flaky, creamy, and not overly sweet. Definitely a 5-star spot. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Grandpa Chen and everything was exceptional. The roast pork bun had a soft, finely textured crumb with a juicy, well-seasoned filling that wasn’t greasy. The pineapple bun with roast pork was the standout—pillowy bread topped with a delicate, crackly, buttery crust that melted into the bun, perfectly balancing sweetness with a savory, umami-rich filling. The coffee was smooth and well-balanced, a great companion to the pastries without overpowering them. The space was spotless and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Parking in the back made pickup easy, and I grabbed a few dozens of buns to bring home for the family and extra for work tomorrow. Will be coming back!

The bun do taste not fully cooked. I know they want to have the softness texture but at least get the temperature / timing right. Not everyone like to eat not fully cooked dough. On the other hand their 雞仔餅... Holy moly hard like a rock. Cant even get one bite off. Get ready for dentist appt if you want to finish it all. Not everything is bad, I do like the black sesame cookie.
