National Bakery Introduce
In the vibrant heart of the Soundview neighborhood in the Bronx, National Bakery has long stood as a familiar cornerstone for residents and commuters alike. Situated along the bustling Westchester Avenue corridor, this local establishment captures the essence of a traditional New York neighborhood bakery while catering to the specific cultural tastes of its diverse community. For many, a trip to National Bakery is a daily ritual, providing the essential fuels of city life: a strong cup of coffee, a fresh roll, and a welcoming atmosphere that feels like home. Whether you are a lifelong Bronxite or just passing through the 10472 zip code, this bakery offers a window into the authentic, hardworking spirit of the borough.
The philosophy of National Bakery is rooted in simplicity and consistency. In a city where trendy cafes come and go, there is a profound value in a business that remembers your face and your "usual" order. The bakery serves as a bridge between a traditional pastry shop and a classic New York deli, offering a wide array of baked goods alongside a robust menu of hot breakfast and lunch options. It is this versatility that makes it a vital part of the local infrastructure. From the early hours of the morning when the scent of toasting bread fills the air to the late afternoon when students stop by for a sweet snack, National Bakery maintains a steady, energetic pulse that mirrors the rhythm of the Bronx streets outside its doors.
Location and Accessibility
National Bakery is located at 1617 Westchester Ave, Bronx, NY 10472, USA. This prime location is exceptionally convenient for those who rely on the New York City transit system. The bakery sits directly beneath the elevated tracks of the 6 train, positioned centrally between the Morrison Avenue-Soundview and Elder Avenue stations. This makes it an ideal "grab-and-go" destination for commuters heading toward Manhattan or further into the Bronx. The constant flow of the subway overhead serves as a reminder of the shop's role as a transit-oriented hub for the community.
For those traveling by foot or local bus, the bakery is easily accessible via the Bx4 and Bx4A lines which run along Westchester Avenue. The area is a dense commercial strip, meaning that a visit to the bakery can easily be combined with other local errands. While street parking in this part of the Bronx can be competitive—as is standard for most of New York City—the high turnover of customers means that those driving can often find a quick spot for a pickup. The storefront is designed for efficiency, with a layout that allows staff to move quickly during the high-volume morning rushes, ensuring that even during peak times, New Yorkers on a schedule can get their coffee and breakfast without significant delay.

What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at National Bakery, the absolute "must-order" item for a true Bronx experience is their toasted corn bread with butter. Local regulars swear by it—specifically requesting it to be toasted until the edges are golden and crispy, then finished with a generous spread of butter. Pair this with a large cup of their hot coffee (perfectly customized with your choice of sugar and milk) for a breakfast that is as satisfying as it is iconic. The corn bread here strikes the perfect balance between sweetness and a dense, hearty texture that keeps you full well into the afternoon.
If you are looking for a celebratory centerpiece, the bakery is well-known for its custom cake services. While they offer a variety of flavors, their Tres Leches and Oreo-inspired cakes are frequently cited as local favorites for their moisture and rich flavor profiles. However, as a savvy New York consumer, it is worth choosing to be very specific when placing your order. To ensure the best results for custom designs, it is recommended to provide clear, high-resolution references and to double-check the details of the fillings and decorations during the order process. While the bakery excels at traditional, home-style bakes, clear communication is the key to ensuring your visual expectations match the delicious final product. For a quick midday pick-me-up, don't overlook their classic donuts or the "borrachos"—these small treats are a testament to the bakery's deep roots in traditional pastry arts. Choosing National Bakery means choosing a piece of the Bronx's living history, served one slice and one cup at a time.
In summary, National Bakery at 1617 Westchester Ave remains a vital and energetic participant in the daily life of the Bronx. By combining the efficiency of a transit-hub eatery with the personalized touch of a neighborhood shop, it provides a valuable service to the Soundview community. Whether you are there for the legendary toasted corn bread or a custom cake for a loved one, you are supporting a business that truly understands the flavor and the pace of New York City.

The ladies that work there are awesome. Great customer service, they are great with people and move pretty fast to make sure all their customers are happy and satisfied 😌 The tall lady with black hair, after your 2nd or 3rd time she have memorized what you normally order. Mine was large cup of coffee, 3 sugars and 3 corn bread toasted in butter. I walked in and she looked at me and say; tall coffee 3 sugars and 3 corn muffins toasted in butter... RIGHT? COOLEST LADY EVER. Thank you. I will see you in December right after Christmas.

I wouldn’t get a cake like this for my worst enemy… I asked for a simple white cake with a shell borders and writing on the top of the cake. I wanted to border to be lavender and writing to be light green. These people assured me they would be able to complete my very simple request. I have messages of them assuring me. They provided me with a neon green and neon pink cake with probably the ugliest borders and the ugliest penmanship ever. There were random squiggly lines on the border which was like a 1 year old drew on the cake. The picture I provided was a elegant simple cake and they could not even do that. I really do wonder how businesses like these stay in business. Who even goes to them? The cake was so dry and looked moldy. I feel like I poisoned my family and friends by having them try this cake. When I picked up the cake- I was completely shocked. My jaw fell to the floor. It is the ugliest cake I’ve ever seen in my life. Do better national bakery. I want my money back.

I bought a Dominican cake for my dad’s birthday and I gave them a picture for the inspiration it was an easy design and they gave me something that looks nothing like what I ordered. And they left paper on the cake because “it would have stained the white frosting” like what? Don’t order cakes from there other than what they already have done. People said the cake tastes good so at least that was worth the money but design wise they are bad.

I had a terrible experience at this bakery. My brother paid for a cake for my mom’s 60th birthday, which is also on Christmas, making it a very special occasion for our family. When I picked up the cake, they had misspelled her name, even though I had clearly spelled it out multiple times: N-A-T-I-V-I-D-A-D. The staff member kept asking me how to spell it, and I repeated myself several times. Somehow, they still wrote it wrong with an ‘M’ instead of an ‘N’ even though the order ticket was correct. The staff member asked me AGAIN how to spell it while trying to fix it, but she took offense when I clarified. She even asked me if there was a ‘D’ at the end of her name 🤦🏻♀️ like you can’t be serious… She eventually corrected the mistake, but the fix was sloppy and unsightly. She didn’t even smooth out the frosting. The name looked messy, and the cake felt rushed. This was such an important occasion, and they didn’t care enough to get it right. I wouldn’t recommend this bakery to anyone looking for quality or professionalism. It was such a letdown! Do not spend your hard earn money here! The only thing that was tasty was the frosting. The cake itself was very dry— totally not worth the money.

I passed by to get a simple coffee. What a waste. They basically gave me a cup of warm milk and hot mud water. Coffee does not have any flavor. Its a hard pass for me.
