One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery

198-21 Hollis Ave, St. Albans, NY 11412, USA

3.0
The famous Chris and Son's Roti Shop shut down and is now the One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery. I had the pleasure of visiting this morning to eat some chicken and goat doubles with an apple Solo J, and the experience was incredible. Michelle, Farida, and Stacy ran the previous Chris and Son's operation and they run everything here as well. The doubles may be the best that I have had outside of Trinidad, and that's saying a lot because I eat doubles all the time. Just note that there are no tables to eat on, so you get the authentic Caribbean eating while standing up experience, which adds to the charm if you're asking me. - Arin Goswami

One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery Introduce

In the quiet yet culturally vibrant pocket of St. Albans, Queens, food enthusiasts and neighborhood residents find a genuine taste of the islands at One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery. For those familiar with the local culinary history, this establishment stands on the legacy of the famous Chris and Son's Roti Shop. While the name has changed, the soul of the kitchen remains, largely thanks to the continued presence of beloved staff members like Michelle, Farida, and Stacy, who have spent years perfecting the art of West Indian cuisine. In a city like New York, where authenticity can sometimes be diluted, this shop remains a steadfast guardian of traditional Trinidadian and Caribbean flavors.

Stepping into One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery is an experience that instantly transports you from the streets of Queens to the bustling markets of Port of Spain. It is a no-frills, high-energy environment where the focus is entirely on the quality of the food. As a staple in the 11412 area, the shop caters to a diverse local population that values fresh ingredients and bold spices. It serves not just as a place to eat, but as a community landmark where the heritage of the Caribbean is celebrated through every hand-flipped roti and perfectly seasoned pot of channa. For New Yorkers seeking a departure from the mainstream, this bakery and roti shop offers an unfiltered look at West Indian hospitality.

What is worth choosing

If you are a newcomer to One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery, there is one item that stands above all others: the Doubles. These iconic Trinidadian treats—consisting of two pieces of fried flatbread (bara) filled with curried chickpeas (channa)—are the shop's claim to fame. For an elevated experience, many locals recommend adding "the works," which typically includes sweet tamarind sauce, spicy pepper sauce, and cucumber chutney. The chicken and goat doubles are also highly regarded for their tender, well-marinated meat that provides a heartier alternative to the traditional vegetarian version.

For a more substantial meal, the Curry Goat Roti or the Boneless Chicken Roti are essential choices. The roti skins are thin, soft, and perfect for soaking up the rich, aromatic gravy of the curries. If you are visiting for breakfast, the Bake and Saltfish is a quintessential choice that offers a savory, satisfying start to the day. Additionally, the Aloo Pie—a soft, fried pastry filled with seasoned mashed potatoes—is a fan favorite, especially when paired with a cold apple Solo soda. To finish your visit on a sweet note, don't leave without a Currant Roll or a slice of their traditional pound cake from the bakery counter. These baked goods are the perfect way to temper the heat of the Caribbean spices you'll enjoy in your main course. Whether you're ordering in-person or via a delivery app, specifying your desired spice level is key to ensuring your meal is exactly to your liking.

Despite the changes in branding over the years, One Stop Roti Shop and Bakery remains a vital part of the St. Albans food scene. It is a place where the recipes are respected, the portions are generous, and the flavors are unapologetically bold. For any New Yorker looking to explore the depth of Queens' international food offerings, a stop at 198-21 Hollis Avenue is a delicious necessity.
