Greenberg’s Bagels Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city where the "best bagel" debate is a local sport, Greenberg’s Bagels has carved out a unique space by blending old-school Brooklyn tradition with the vibrant energy of Manhattan's West Village. Originally starting as a neighborhood sensation in Bed-Stuy, Greenberg’s expanded to Carmine Street, bringing its signature thin, soft, and hand-rolled bagels to one of the most competitive food corridors in New York. The shop is the brainchild of Julian Cavin and Jamison Blankenship (of Chuko Ramen fame), named as a tribute to Cavin’s mother’s side of the family. Since its inception, the brand has focused on a "new take on an old tradition," prioritizing fresh-daily production and high-quality ingredients that appeal to both traditionalists and the modern foodie crowd.
Greenberg’s isn't just about the dough; it’s about the culture of the New York morning. The West Village location mirrors the minimalist, cool aesthetic of its Brooklyn predecessor, often serving as a hub for locals seeking a reliable breakfast sandwich before the workday begins. While many shops lean into the massive, doughy "bread-with-a-hole" style, Greenberg’s is celebrated for a slightly thinner, softer bagel that acts as the perfect vessel for their hefty, creative fillings. It’s a "grab-and-go" institution that has survived and thrived by sticking to the fundamentals: flour, water, yeast, and a lot of heart.
Location and Accessibility
Greenberg’s Bagels is perfectly positioned at 34 Carmine St, New York, NY 10014, USA. Located between Bleecker and Bedford Streets, it sits in the heart of the West Village, a neighborhood famed for its narrow, winding streets and historic charm. The shop is surrounded by a mix of classic Italian eateries and trendy boutiques, making it a natural stop for anyone wandering through the village on a weekend morning. Its storefront is understated but welcoming, often characterized by a bustling sidewalk scene of patrons waiting for their fresh orders.
Accessibility is excellent for those utilizing New York City’s subway system. The shop is a mere few minutes' walk from the West 4th St-Washington Sq station (A, C, E, B, D, F, M lines) and the Houston St station (1 train). For those on foot or bike, it’s a central point that connects the West Village to SoHo and Greenwich Village. While the shop is primarily designed for takeout and delivery, the surrounding neighborhood offers plenty of iconic spots—like Father Demo Square—where you can take your sandwich and enjoy a quintessential New York morning. Be aware that during peak "bagel rush hours" on weekends, the area around the shop can become quite lively and chaotic as the staff works through a high volume of in-person and digital orders.

Features / Highlights
The Greenberg’s experience is defined by several key features that make it a standout destination for local bagel enthusiasts:
- Thin & Soft Texture: Unlike the overly dense bagels found elsewhere, these are known for being soft and chewy with a slight "briny sheen" on the crust, making them highly manageable as sandwiches.
- Creative Flavor Profiles: Beyond the basics, the menu features unique additions like Mike’s Hot Honey, truffle butter, and beer-battered onion rings within their sandwiches.
- Dietary Inclusivity: The shop offers a robust selection of vegan options, including vegan American cheese, soy bacon, and multiple varieties of tofu cream cheese (plain and scallion).
- High-Quality Sourcing: Using premium ingredients like Balthazar’s Kouign Amann for specialty sandwiches and Uncle Morgan’s Giardiniera for a unique kick.
- Modern Ordering Integration: A heavy focus on digital accessibility allows users to bypass the in-person "chaos" by ordering ahead for seamless pickup.
- West Village Vibe: The shop maintains a minimalist, trendy aesthetic that fits perfectly into the local neighborhood culture without losing its "old-school" soul.

What is worth choosing
If you are visiting Greenberg’s Bagels for the first time, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese (BEC) on an Everything bagel is the standard-bearer. It is consistently rated as one of the best in the area due to the perfectly toasted bagel and the high quality of the bacon. However, for a true taste of the Greenberg’s specialty menu, The Jersey Pork Roll (Taylor ham, two fried eggs, and American cheese) is a local favorite that brings a bit of Tri-State nostalgia to Manhattan. Those looking for a bit of heat should opt for The Brooklyn Special, which features a fried egg, cheddar, hash brown, avocado, and a generous drizzle of Mike’s Hot Honey for a sweet and spicy finish.
For the "appetizing" crowd, the Classic Smoked Salmon with capers and red onions remains a top choice, though the Bedford Avenue (lox and whitefish salad together) offers a more decadent experience. If you aren't in the mood for a full sandwich, a simple bagel with Tofu Scallion Cream Cheese is a great way to appreciate the texture of the hand-rolled dough. To avoid the reported in-person ordering "scramble," it is highly worth choosing the online pickup option via Seamless or Toast; your Pastrami, Egg, and Cheese will be waiting for you, lightly toasted and ready to hit the streets of the West Village. Don't forget to add a Hash Brown to your sandwich—the combination of the soft bagel and the crispy potato crunch is widely considered the ultimate New York breakfast move.

Now was it a solid bagel? Absolutely, no question about it. It was the right level of toasted, with decent but not exceptional cream cheese. However, the ordering experience was exceptionally chaotic. There were some people who were scrambling to order in person with limited bagels left and the online orders a bit hard to access. Worth trying once perhaps, but I don’t think I’d go out of my way for it.

I made my order via Seamless for pickup. It was a Pastrami, Fried Egg, and Cheese on a Sesame Bun lightly toasted. Came out great. I would of liked the egg a bit fried but that's personal preference. I will definitely be trying the other sandwiches on the menu soon .

I will never come back to Greenbergs in West Village after today's experience. I picked up 4 bagels to go for me and my roommates and when I got home, 1 bagel was missing from our order. I walked back to Greenbergs and the woman who served me accused me of lying to try to get an extra bagel - citing that I never brought in the other 3 bagels as 'evidence' she called it. When I explained that the other 3 bagels were currently being eaten by my roommates, she dug in harder and insisted she put the bagel in the bag... not true. After turning this into a verbal dispute with me in front of other customers, she decided to give me the missing bagel, only to then chase me down the street a moment later because the bag she handed me was not my bagel and was for a different customer... after all this incompetency I came home to enjoy my bagel only to find the smallest cream cheese schmear I have ever seen in this city. Mind you, I am a regular at Greenbergs in Bed-Stuy. I have picked up bagels weekly for over 2 years, however this experience in West Village will lose my business forever. I have never left a review on a restaurant, but I also have never felt more alienated as a customer as I have today. It is a shame - I used to enjoy these bagels and have recommended Greenbergs to friends and neighbors countless times... However those days are now behind me.

Horrible experience. I had five different DoorDash drivers assigned to my order, and the restaurant refused to take care of them or even look at them when they arrived. Door dash had to keep reassigning drivers because they refused to help them. I waited two hours before finally canceling the order. They don’t respect the drivers and have horrible customer service.

Decent bagel with hefty amount of cream cheese. Wait time was fine, considering it looks like it’s being held down by a small staff. A little overpriced for my liking but that’s life in the big city.
