Introduction / Overview
For residents of the Bronx seeking the authentic, tropical flavors of the Caribbean, Piquitos de Azúcar by Cinthia Jiménez stands as a dedicated purveyor of traditional Latin American confectionery. Nestled in the bustling neighborhood surrounding East Gun Hill Road, this boutique bakery has become a destination for those who appreciate the unique texture and artistry of a true Dominican cake. In a city where dessert options are endless, Cinthia Jiménez has established a space that focuses on cultural heritage, bringing the "Bizcocho Dominicano" to the forefront of the local food scene. This is a place where family traditions are celebrated through sugar, flour, and the distinctive meringue frosting that defines island-style baking.
The bakery is designed with an intimate, neighborhood-centric feel. Unlike large commercial franchises, Piquitos de Azúcar offers a more personal touch, where the owner’s name is on the door and her passion is reflected in the display cases. It serves as a vital community hub for the 10467 zip code, catering to a diverse clientele that includes both Spanish-speaking locals and those from other backgrounds who have developed a love for Latin sweets. The atmosphere is professional yet welcoming, characterized by an staff that is eager to educate customers on the nuances of different fillings and pastry styles. Whether it is a simple afternoon treat or a centerpiece for a major life milestone, the bakery aims to provide a "sweet little peak" (piquito) of joy to every visitor.
The shop’s reputation is built on the foundation of specialized expertise. Dominican baking is a specific craft, requiring a delicate balance of moisture and airiness in the sponge, paired with a rich, velvety filling. Cinthia Jiménez and her team prioritize these traditional elements, ensuring that every whole cake order or individual slice maintains the integrity of the recipe. For the Bronx community, having access to such specialized bakes locally means that special occasions—from birthdays to cultural holidays—can be celebrated with flavors that feel like home, even in the heart of New York City.

I have ordered several times at this locations. From something simple as a few pastries, a slice of cake or a whole cake order, the customer service was great. The associate will describe fillings or the difference between pastries. Even my husband ordered a cake (pictured) and he does not speak Spanish!!! I confidently order my cakes for special occasions. One time I ordered the chocolate Dominican cake for my daughter's birthday and my family were amazed. The place is small, usually not crowded, prices are reasonable. When you order an elaborate cake, you are going to pay more, duh...

I bought this cake for my son’s 6 month pictures and I was so disappointed that I wanted to cry. As you can see by the pictures, this doesn’t look like a “professional” baker did it. I think I could’ve done a better job. I also wanted the letters smaller and they just did what they wanted. Also the “tassels” look horrible!!! I would’ve left it and not paid for the rest if it wasn’t for my son’s photos.

So unprofessional, when I originally went to put in the order it was Tuesday. Automatically they asked for payment without confirming if they could do my request. They then notified my request would be fulfilled as ordered and requested payment. I asked for them to send an invoice multiple times for the deposit and they never did. It is now Saturday and I have to scramble for a last minute cake because they are unprofessional and unresponsive.
