Zaro's Family Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the relentless, fast-paced heart of Manhattan, few names carry as much weight in the world of baking as Zaro's Family Bakery. For nearly a century, this fourth-generation, family-owned institution has been the aromatic backdrop to the daily lives of millions of New Yorkers. Established in 1927 by Joseph Zaro, an immigrant who arrived at Ellis Island with little more than a dream and a profound understanding of Eastern European baking traditions, the bakery has grown from a single Bronx storefront into a city-wide symbol of reliability and quality. Today, under the stewardship of the fourth generation of the Zaro family—Michael, Brian, and Scott—the bakery continues to serve as a culinary landmark, particularly within the bustling corridors of the city's major transit hubs.
The location at 1 Pennsylvania Plaza (Penn Station) is more than just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a gateway for commuters, travelers, and locals alike. In a city that is constantly evolving, Zaro's offers a comforting sense of continuity. Whether you are catching a morning train to the suburbs or navigating the subterranean energy of Midtown, the sight of the iconic Zaro's logo and the smell of fresh yeast and sugar provide a grounding New York experience. While the city around it has transformed over the decades, Zaro’s has remained steadfast in its commitment to "old world" recipes, hand-rolling their bagels and baking their famous breads from scratch every single day. This dedication to craft has earned them a place in the cultural fabric of New York, famously serving as the teenage workplace for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and gaining recognition from generations of local families.
Location and Accessibility
Zaro's Family Bakery is perfectly situated at 1 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY 10001, right in the epicenter of the city’s transit network. Located inside the Pennsylvania Station complex between West 33rd and West 34th Streets, it sits at the intersection of convenience and history. For anyone utilizing the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), New Jersey Transit, or Amtrak, Zaro's is often the first or last stop on a journey. Its proximity to the 7th Avenue entrance makes it an easy target for those entering or exiting the station, providing a high-quality alternative to standard terminal fare.
Accessibility is unparalleled for both locals and visitors. The shop is directly served by the 1, 2, and 3 subway lines at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop, and it is a short, underground walk to the A, C, and E lines at 8th Avenue or the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W lines at Herald Square. Because it is located on the main concourse level of one of the busiest buildings in the United States, it is designed for maximum efficiency. While the station environment can be chaotic, the bakery’s layout allows for a streamlined "grab-and-go" experience that respects the tight schedules of New York commuters. Whether you are a local office worker in the surrounding towers or a traveler passing through, Zaro's accessibility makes it a reliable anchor in the Midtown grid.

What is Worth Choosing
When you find yourself at the counter of Zaro's at Penn Station, the sheer variety can be daunting, but there are a few items that are non-negotiable for a true New York experience. First and foremost is the Black and White Cookie. While some local critics debate the perfection of any icon, Zaro's version is the one that has defined the category for millions; its soft, biscuit-like texture and dual-flavored frosting represent the quintessential NYC snack. For those seeking something more substantial, the salt bagel with cream cheese is a sleeper hit. Even at the end of a long day, customers have noted that these bagels retain a surprising level of freshness, often feeling as though they were pulled from the oven just minutes prior. The generous portion of cream cheese is a hallmark of the Zaro’s service style.
If you are looking for something to share, the Raspberry or Chocolate Rugelach is a must-buy. These small, flakey, jam-filled pastries are a nod to the bakery’s Eastern European heritage and are notoriously addictive. For the morning commuter, the "Cretzel"—a creative hybrid between a croissant and a pretzel—offers a savory, salty, and buttery start to the day that you won't easily find elsewhere. If you have time to wait for the register to open during the early morning shift, the "good miracle" of a fresh, warm Challah roll is worth the extra few minutes. It is a testament to the family's 95-year history that despite the industrial pace of Penn Station, the food still carries the soul of a neighborhood Bronx bakery. No matter what you choose, ensure you ask for your bagel toasted; when paired with their creamy spreads, it remains one of the most satisfying and affordable luxuries in Midtown Manhattan.

Go there at 5:50 am waited for them to open for the to tell me give them until 6:50am. I asked my and was told “I don’t know, no people” Whatever that means. Then when I get inside the store and was told they can’t serve me because the register is not open! Waited an additional 10 minutes to get a good miracle at best. Zaros Family Bakery is 🗑️

End of the day, I ordered a salt bagel toasted with cream cheese figuring it wouldn't be at peak of freshness. But it felt like it just came out of the oven. Delightfully fresh and delicious with generous amount of creamy cream cheese. Friendly service too.

Great customer service, delicious pastries, and a tasty breakfast wrap (for dinner)! Definitely recommend if you're waiting for the train in Penn Station. I had the southwestern breakfast wrap, prune danish, and jelly donut; couldn't help getting a second pastry after I saw the awesome display

Baked goods are delicious! Bagels especially. I had a toasted everything bagel with scallion cream cheese - amazing and so filling! A whole meal itself. Always busy for a reason! The cashier was a bit confused and had to ring up my order in two parts.

A fine stop for bagels, coffee, and sandwiches, including breakfast. Lox and cream cheese on everything untoasted is a New York “can’t miss,” and grabbing a fresh loaf of the chocolate babka always brightens someone’s counter. Consistently friendly and fast service, one of the classier joints in the Penn Station submarine land.
