Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant Introduce
In the vibrant heart of Ozone Park, Queens, a neighborhood renowned for its rich cultural tapestry and diverse culinary offerings, Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant stands as a prominent fixture for those seeking the comforting, robust flavors of the Caribbean. Located on the bustling Liberty Avenue, this establishment has carved out a reputation as a go-to destination for locals and visitors alike who crave authentic Guyanese cuisine. Whether you are a lifelong resident of New York or someone exploring the borough's famous food scene for the first time, Shanta’s offers a window into the traditional kitchens of Guyana, serving up a blend of savory meals and sweet baked goods that capture the essence of West Indian heritage.
The atmosphere at Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant is reflective of the community it serves: energetic, unpretentious, and deeply rooted in local tradition. As a staple of the New York Caribbean food landscape, the bakery prides itself on delivering a taste of home. For many Guyanese expats living in the surrounding Queens neighborhoods, a visit to Shanta’s is more than just a quick meal; it is an experience that evokes memories of home-cooked Sunday dinners and the aromatic spice profiles unique to South American Caribbean fusion. The dual nature of the business—functioning as both a full-service restaurant and a specialized bakery—allows it to cater to a wide variety of needs, from early morning breakfast runs to hearty late-afternoon lunches.
The location of Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant is strategically positioned to serve the diverse population of Ozone Park. Situated at 107-04 Liberty Ave, the restaurant is easily accessible for those navigating the neighborhood by foot or public transportation. Liberty Avenue is a major commercial artery in Queens, characterized by its constant flow of activity and proximity to the A train line. For commuters and locals, the bakery is a convenient stop-off point. Being in the 11417 zip code area, it sits in a pocket of New York where the Guyanese and Indo-Caribbean influence is palpable, ensuring that the food remains consistent with high community standards for authenticity and flavor.
Accessibility is a key factor in why Shanta’s remains a popular choice. The storefront is visible and welcoming, fitting seamlessly into the landscape of local shops and markets that define Ozone Park. While parking in this busy section of Queens can sometimes be a challenge typical of New York City streets, the high volume of foot traffic ensures that the bakery is always buzzing with life. The shop serves as a community hub where neighbors often cross paths, highlighting its role as a social cornerstone as much as a culinary one. Its location ensures that anyone traveling through the southern part of Queens can easily find their way to a warm meal or a fresh pastry.
Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant provides a comprehensive menu that bridges the gap between a traditional bakery and a savory kitchen. The services offered are designed to satisfy cravings at any time of the day, focusing on traditional recipes passed down through generations. The offerings include:
- Traditional Guyanese breakfast items including savory bakes and saltfish.
- A wide variety of authentic Guyanese lunch and dinner entrees featuring curry and stew options.
- Freshly baked West Indian pastries such as pine tarts, cheese rolls, and salara.
- Customary Caribbean breads including plait bread and tennis rolls, baked fresh on-site.
- Counter service for quick takeaway meals, catering to the fast-paced lifestyle of New York commuters.
- Dine-in options for customers who prefer to enjoy their home-cooked meals in a casual restaurant setting.
- Roti and dhal puri prepared to accompany various meat and vegetable side dishes.
What sets Shanta’s apart from other eateries in the area is its commitment to maintaining the "home-cooked" feel of its food. In a city where commercialized versions of ethnic cuisine are common, Shanta’s maintains a profile that feels personal and genuine. The kitchen focuses on the slow-cooked techniques and specific spice blends—incorporating cumin, turmeric, and scotch bonnet peppers—that define Guyanese soul food. The features and highlights of this establishment include:
- Authentic Flavor Profile: Recognized by patrons for providing some of the closest representations of true Guyanese home cooking found in Queens.
- Popular Local Hotspot: A high turnover of customers ensures that the food is prepared fresh throughout the day.
- Diverse Pastry Selection: A dedicated bakery section that offers traditional sweets that are often hard to find outside of specific Caribbean enclaves.
- Cultural Significance: A community-focused environment where the staff and regular customers often share a familiar and friendly rapport.
- Satisfying Portions: The restaurant serves hearty meals intended to provide a full and satisfying dining experience.
- High Demand: Its popularity often leads to a lively atmosphere, signifying the high quality and reputation of the food within the local community.

When deciding what to choose at Shanta’s, the consensus among regular visitors is clear: the Guyanese specialties are the undisputed stars of the menu. If you are looking for a meal that embodies the spirit of the restaurant, the curry dishes—whether chicken, goat, or shrimp—paired with fresh dhal puri or roti are highly recommended. These dishes are celebrated for their depth of flavor and the authenticity of the spices used, which reflect the Indo-Guyanese heritage prevalent in the region. The textures and aromas are designed to provide a comforting experience that mirrors a meal prepared in a family kitchen.
In addition to the savory dishes, the bakery section is worth a visit on its own. The pine tarts and cheese rolls are local favorites, perfect for a mid-afternoon snack or a sweet finish to a meal. For those who enjoy traditional breads, the plait bread is frequently cited as a must-buy, known for its soft texture and freshness. While the restaurant can get busy during peak hours, the short wait is a testament to the quality of the food. It is a place where the popularity is earned through consistent flavors and a commitment to the culinary traditions of Guyana. For anyone in the New York area seeking a genuine taste of the Caribbean, Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant is a destination that delivers an authentic and satisfying experience.
The feedback from the community suggests that the restaurant is particularly well-regarded for its ability to replicate the specific "home-cooked" taste that many West Indians in New York miss. While the service can be fast-paced and the shop can become crowded, the underlying appeal remains the food. Patrons often highlight that the flavors are "always satisfying" and "authentic," which are the highest compliments for an ethnic eatery in a competitive market like Queens. Choosing Shanta’s means choosing a piece of Guyanese culture right here in the United States, making it a valuable landmark for food lovers across the five boroughs.

Shanta’s Bakery And Restaurant Reviews

A restaurant where they are kind to the customers they know. Very very cheap with their portions. This is embarrassing, like do I have to beg for an extra piece of chicken? The customer before me got a load plate, which, I might add, they knew each other and were flirting.

The food is really good, probably the closest you’ll find to true home-cooked Guyanese food in Queens. The flavors are authentic and always satisfying. It can get a bit busy at times, so there may be a short wait, but that just shows how popular it is. Definitely worth it!

This was the worst customer service experience ever. I need to place a large order so I called a week advance. I called and a guy answered and I ask about the price of the dhal puri which he told me and then hang up on me. I call again and a women answer, I ask if I can place an order for dhal puri and chicken for Saturday, she said call back Wednesday we are too busy. I called back on Wednesday and was told call back later we are busy. This was so frustrating, I called somewhere else and place my $800 order since you guys don’t want they sale.

Disgusting food, worse service. The two females staffing the front yesterday night, 10/8/25 were beyond rude. It's the end of the night, and the woman gives me 4 small pieces of the chicken curry, just so she can sell the last 10 pieces to a Guyanese person for another 15 dollars...Disgusting@!! And, we both got sick from the stale food.

If you’re craving authentic Guyanese food in Queens, Shanta’s is easily one of the best spots around. Every visit has been a flavorful journey, the food is always fresh, well-prepared, and hits all the right notes of comfort and nostalgia. My go-to favorites? The Saltfish, Potato & Bake, a classic done right every time The Potato Ball - golden, crispy perfection with that familiar Guyanese touch Unlike some places in NY that claim to serve authentic Guyanese cuisine, Shanta’s delivers the real deal. It truly brings a little piece of home right here to New York. The staff has been easy to communicate with in my experience, and the vibes are generally pleasant. That said, customer service could use a bit of polish. One recommendation would be to implement a numbering system to manage the crowd, it does get packed (because the food’s that good), and a more organized system would go a long way. Still, Shanta’s continues to earn its place as a neighborhood favorite. Highly recommend if you’re after legit Guyanese eats and a reminder of home.
