Papa d’Amour Introduce
In the heart of Greenwich Village, a new culinary landmark has emerged that bridges the gap between classic French pastry technique and the vibrant, soulful world of Asian bread culture. Papa d’Amour, located at 64 University Place, is the latest visionary concept from James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Dominique Ansel. Known globally as the creator of the Cronut, Ansel has moved into a more personal territory with this establishment. The name itself, "Papa d’Amour," translates to "Papa, my love," a term of endearment used by his two young children, who are of Taiwanese and French heritage. This bakery is a tribute to that blend of cultures, offering New Yorkers a menu that is daring, nostalgic, and entirely unique to the Manhattan landscape.
The atmosphere at Papa d’Amour is designed to reflect the warmth of a family kitchen where "there are no rules." While Ansel’s previous ventures often leaned into high-concept patisserie, this shop feels more like a neighborhood laboratory for "Asian bread culture." It explores the textures and flavors found in night markets and traditional bakeries across Asia—think mochi, taro, sesame, and scallions—and elevates them with the precision of a French master. For local users in New York, this spot has quickly become a destination not just for the "Instagrammable" aesthetic of the desserts, but for the genuine innovation found in every bite. It is a space that celebrates the intersection of heritage and imagination, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to expand their definition of what a bakery can be.
Location and Accessibility
Papa d’Amour is perfectly situated at 64 University Pl, New York, NY 10003, USA, tucked between 10th and 11th Streets. This prime Greenwich Village location puts it right in the center of one of the city's most historic and walkable neighborhoods. The bakery is surrounded by the academic energy of NYU and the sophisticated residential charm of the "Gold Coast" of Fifth Avenue. Its position on University Place makes it an ideal stop for a morning pastry before work or a mid-afternoon dessert break while exploring the nearby Washington Square Park.
Accessibility is a key advantage for this location. The bakery is just a few blocks away from major transit hubs, including the Union Square station (4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains), which provides seamless access for residents from all five boroughs. Additionally, the 8th St-NYU station and the Astor Place station are within a five-minute walk. For those who prefer the bus, the M1 and M2 lines run nearby. The shop maintains daily hours from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, allowing both early risers and after-work commuters to experience the menu. While the interior is intimate, the flow of the shop is designed to handle the inevitable New York queues with grace, and the service is frequently praised for being welcoming and attentive.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Papa d’Amour, the absolute standout and "must-have" is the Sesame Pot. Described as "the most interesting thing you'll ever have," this dessert features a pudding encased in a completely edible jar. It is a masterclass in texture and flavor, combining the nuttiness of toasted sesame with a silky, indulgent interior. For those arriving in the morning, the Salt Bread Bagel is a high-priority choice. While the menu indicates it is only available until 11:00 AM, it is often worth asking at the register if any remain, as the "perfect butter" used in its preparation makes it a local favorite that rivals even the best traditional bagels in the city.
If you are looking for something unique and "Instagrammable," the Matcha Souffle and the Lace Batter Donut provide a fun visual and textural experience. However, for a flavor that truly satisfies, the Mango Coconut jam jar is highly recommended over other fruit options for its balanced sweetness. If you see the Pretzel Salt Egg Tart on the counter, do not hesitate—it is a savory-sweet revelation brushed with brown butter. While the Vietnamese hot latte might be a "miss" for some palates, the rest of the drink menu, particularly the Yaki Mochi Hot Chocolate, is excellently crafted. A final word of advice for New York commuters: the jam jars and pudding pots are delicate and "don’t travel the best," so be sure to handle your bag with care as you navigate the city streets. Whether you are there for a quick mochi donut or a sit-down savory sandwich, Papa d’Amour offers a slice of Asian-inspired luxury that is well worth the trip to University Place.

Been a few times and everything I've tried is great. Not too sweet, and super unique! The matcha Souffle, mochi donut, salt bread bagel and jam jars are my top picks on the menu. The matcha Souffle was fun and instagramable, but it wasn't worth coming back for. I would return for more mochi donuts and salt bread bagels. Though they display the bagel is only available until 11am, sometimes they do offer it afterwards, so be sure to ask at the register. The butter is perfect and reminds me of the popular butters I've enjoyed in Paris- anything Dominique creates is the best! If I had to choose between the Ube Jar or the Mango Coconut, I'd choose the mango. My only complaint is that they don’t travel the best. Travel with the jam jars carefully!

Papa d'Amour blew my expectations away! I originally saved this place for the ice cream, but after checking online, I realized everything looked good. When I arrived, it was actually a tough decision to pick what to order because everything looked so interesting. We ordered the yaki mochi hot chocolate (the current special), lace batter donut, sesame pot, crispy shrimp sandwich, and the Vietnamese hot latte. They were also kind enough to give us a Pretzel Salt Egg Tart to taste. Aside from the Vietnamese hot latte, which was the only thing we didn't love, everything else was absolutely amazing. The standout was definitely the sesame pot - it is like an edible jar with pudding inside. It is a must-have! If you don't know what to order, just get this; it will be the most interesting thing you'll ever have. Kudos to the chef and the team because everything was just so damn good. The service was excellent too - I loved it and will definitely be back! Food and Drink The menu is incredibly creative and everything we tried was fantastic. The sesame pot is the absolute star - an edible jar with pudding that is a unique and delicious experience. The yaki mochi hot chocolate, lace batter donut, and crispy shrimp sandwich were all excellent as well. The only miss for us was the Vietnamese hot latte, which wasn't quite for us. Don't miss the Pretzel Salt Egg Tart if it is available!

Cute cafe vibes. Some stuff was REALLY good, other things were just okay. - Kurobuta hot dog spiral: 10/10, so flavorful, and the sticky rice worked well. Very flakey and great croissant texture - Taro & mochi lace batter donut: 7/10, kinda mid, but I liked the mochi texture and exterior lace batter. Wasn’t a huge fan of the jam inside, tasted kinda artificial - Pretzel salt egg tart: 3/10, they gave us free egg tart samples (so sweet of them), but I can tell why they were giving them away lol. Pretty mid, didn’t like the crust - Salt bread bagel w/ cream cheese: 7/10, pretty good salt bagel, and the cream cheese is yummy

Came here after seeing all the social media hype. Left feeling slightly disappointed and wanting for more. I tried the salt bread bagel, yakimochi hot chocolate, red bean pear chausson, taro mochi donut, and fried chicken sando. The donut has a nice guava jam filling with crunchy outside. It reminded me of the fried taro dimsum dish, which I’m sure they were going for. I feel it would have been better warm but was still good cold. The hot chocolate was nice and could taste real chocolate in it. It was a bit steep for $10.5 for a L size. The rest of the pastries were slightly disappointing. I could see what they were going for in the pear red bean combo but personally wasn’t impressed. The salt bread bagel was exactly what it tried to be, but was unimpressive nonetheless. The sando has a good piece of Taiwanese style fried chicken in it but could’ve used more sauce and the fillings didn’t make much sense to me. The leaves of lettuce threw the sandwich off imo. For nearly $55 for 5 items before tip I would have expected to be more blown away, especially from a bakery touting Dominique Ansel’s brand name. Unfortunately it appears once you get past the visual appeal and social media hype the flavors of these pastries fall flat.

LOVE this French Asian fusion bakery. Ordered so much and everything was unique and interesting. I would say savory highlight was the sausage pastry and sweet for me was the sesame cup. Very delicious, interesting flavor combos and satisfying textures - you can tell the creation of all of the pastries is well thought out!
