Smør Bakery Introduce
Nestled within the eclectic and ever-vibrant streets of the East Village, Smør Bakery has carved out a unique niche in the competitive New York City culinary scene. As New Yorkers, we are accustomed to a vast array of global flavors, yet the minimalist, high-quality approach of Nordic baking offers a refreshing departure from the standard local fare. Smør Bakery brings the essence of Scandinavian comfort to Manhattan, focusing on the principle of "hygge"—a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. This establishment is not just a place to buy bread; it is a curated experience designed for those who appreciate the finer details of artisanal dough, precise spice profiles, and sophisticated savory compositions.
The atmosphere at Smør Bakery reflects the "super chill" vibe that the East Village is famous for, combined with a professional dedication to the craft of baking. In a city that often feels like it is moving at a thousand miles per hour, this bakery provides a space where the service is relaxed and the food is "correctly curated." It has quickly become a local favorite for those seeking a breakfast that feels intentional rather than mass-produced. From the moment you step through the door on East 12th Street, you are greeted by an aesthetic that is both modern and rustic, setting the stage for a menu that balances traditional Scandinavian techniques with the adventurous spirit of contemporary New York gastronomy.
Location and Accessibility
Smør Bakery is located at 437 E 12th St, New York, NY 10009, USA. Situated between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, it occupies a prime spot in one of Manhattan’s most historic and culturally rich neighborhoods. For residents of the East Village, it is a convenient neighborhood staple, while for those visiting from other parts of the city, it serves as a destination worth the trek. The bakery is easily accessible for pedestrians exploring the local boutiques and parks, such as the nearby Tompkins Square Park, which is just a few blocks away.
From a transit perspective, the location is well-served by the city's infrastructure. The L train station at 1st Avenue is the closest subway link, providing a direct connection for those traveling from Brooklyn or the west side of Manhattan. What is worth choosing
If you are visiting Smør Bakery for the first time, there are several "must-try" items that encapsulate the Nordic spirit of the shop. The breakfast plate is perhaps the most iconic choice for a full meal. It is a savory, well-balanced assembly that typically includes smoked salmon, a crisp salad, and their signature rye bread. While customers often have personal preferences regarding the preparation of their eggs—whether you lean toward the standard soft-boiled or prefer a soft scramble—the overall quality of the components makes it one of the most solid breakfast options in the area. It is a meal that feels both indulgent and nourishing, providing the perfect fuel for a day of navigating the city.
For those interested in the sweeter side of the oven, the cardamom bun is an absolute standout. Unlike the overly sweet cinnamon rolls found elsewhere, these buns offer a sophisticated, aromatic heat that is perfectly paired with a hot latte or cappuccino. The seasonal offerings are also highly recommended; the pumpkin donut has earned significant praise for its texture and flavor, while the fig danish and spinach pastries demonstrate the kitchen's mastery over delicate, buttery doughs. If you are looking for a refreshing drink, their Arnold Palmer is a great choice for those who prefer a beverage that isn't cloyingly sweet, leaning into a more natural and crisp flavor profile. No matter your choice, Smør Bakery delivers a piece of Northern Europe right to the heart of New York, making it a destination well worth your time.
In conclusion, Smør Bakery stands as a testament to the diversity of the New York bakery scene. By focusing on quality over quantity and maintaining a "super chill" yet professional environment, it has secured its place as a top-tier destination for East Village locals and visitors alike. Whether you are there for the rye bread, the cardamom buns, or a perfectly curated breakfast plate, you are guaranteed an experience that is both authentic and delicious. It is a little slice of Scandinavia on East 12th Street that every New Yorker should experience at least once.

Really solid breakfast. Savory and correctly curated. I enjoyed the breakfast plate with smoked salmon, salad, and rye bread. I wish i lowkey got a soft scramble instead of a soft boiled but it was delicious regardless. Service was good and super chill. I wish the service was a wee bit more organized ( just put the plates in front of the incorrect people or didn’t aak who the plate was for) as this left us to reorganizing the dishes around the table- which is not bad but kind of annoying but that’s just me!!!! Arnold palmer is on lighter side and not overly sugary which i liked but also could’ve had a more sweet arnie !

Yummy goods! Latte and cappuccino were decent! Loved the cardamom bun and seasonal pumpkin donut. Spinach pastry and fig danish were well made as well!

We got the cardamom and cinnamon bun and they were quite good! However, the server couldn’t heat up our food. We also noticed after that there was a fly in the display case, which was very unappetising.

Breakfast sandwich was really great, it was huge. Egg was really fluffy and avocado spread and sauce was really tasty. Coffee was also great and well balanced with bread. I am not big fan of cardamom flavor but cardamom bread was still good, I enjoyed. It was very moist inside.

Delicious pastries at a cozy spot! The cardamom bun was a highlight - wonderfully fragrant with the distinct cardamom warmth, plus perfectly crispy edges that add such nice texture. The matcha chocolate chip cookie runs a touch sweet but still hits the spot if you're craving something indulgent. The dining space is fairly tiny and gets packed on weekends. The coffee service is also a bit slow - our latte took about 15 minutes and was fairly basic, with just foam and no latte art. Keep that in mind if you’re visiting during peak hours!
