In an era of corporate chains, the presence of a locally owned cafe on Mamaroneck Avenue helps preserve the unique character of White Plains, offering a personalized touch that residents have come to appreciate over the years.

What is worth choosing
When visiting What A Bagel Cafe, the obvious and most rewarding choice is their signature fresh bagels. In true New York fashion, the bagels here are known for their quality, providing that essential chewiness that separates an authentic bagel from a generic roll. For first-time visitors, the "everything" bagel paired with one of their fresh vegetable or scallion cream cheeses is a perennial favorite. The shop takes pride in its bagel-making process, ensuring that the product remains the star of the show. If you are looking for a more substantial start to the day, their breakfast sandwiches are frequently cited as a highlight, offering a warm and satisfying meal that is built for the busy New Yorker on the move.
However, as with many traditional family-owned businesses in the New York area, it is important to navigate the visit with a few local insights. To ensure the smoothest experience, it is highly recommended to carry cash, especially for smaller orders. The shop maintains a strict credit card minimum policy—a common practice among small businesses in the region to offset high processing fees. Being aware of this beforehand can prevent any misunderstandings at the register and keep the transaction quick and efficient. While the management style is firm regarding these operational policies, the quality of the food remains the primary draw. By coming prepared with cash for a single bagel or rounding out your order with additional treats to meet the card minimum, you can fully enjoy what many consider to be one of the most reliable bagel spots in the 10605 zip code. For those who prioritize supporting local family businesses and crave a classic, no-nonsense New York breakfast, What A Bagel Cafe delivers exactly what its name suggests.
In conclusion, What A Bagel Cafe is a fixture of the White Plains community that offers a glimpse into the heart of New York’s small business landscape. It provides the essential flavors that locals have grown up with, served in a straightforward, neighborhood-centric environment. Whether you're a long-time resident of Mamaroneck Avenue or just passing through Westchester, stopping in for a fresh bagel is a great way to experience the local culture. Supporting shops like this ensures that the tradition of the neighborhood bagel cafe continues to thrive for generations to come.

This place is amazing. I did see the review about the minimum credit card charges, but this is a family business and those charges add up. The food is great. The owner is amazing. Can’t ask for a better neighborhood bagel shop.

I’m pregnant and ran in here for a quick bagel because I was starving. I’m not familiar with the place and when I ordered I did not know there was a credit card minimum. I ordered a bagel, and was trying to pay with my card when they said I couldn’t get my bagel because of the minimum. I told them politely I’m so sorry I just don’t have cash, I didn’t know there was a minimum for cards. The owner was just cold, rude and mean, looked at me and walked away. I understand credit card fees can be high, so happy for them to charge me a service fee like most other places do. But to just flat out not let me know beforehand, after my bagel was already made and so clearly cannot be sold to anyone else, and then just look me up and down say “nope” and walk away. It was clearly an honest mistake.. As a small business owner, aren’t you in the people business?

Worker who attended us was rude for no reason my friend simply asked for a plain bagel and his response was said in a rude tone then when we went to pay separately he immediately asked my friend if they were getting the protein bar in their hand when they weren’t even ready to check out indicating my friend was going to leave with out paying for the protein bar, never had a worker who gave this bad of service this is the first, if you’re having a bad day that’s not the customers fault! the food is great this guy is not, do better😂

The lower rating is for three reasons: the unfriendly nature of the couple who are owners, and the credit card policy. They already charge extra for credit card vs. cash, then why have a minimum. The reason they are charging extra is to cover the transaction fees they have to pay as a business. Then why a ridiculous policy on minimum amount for credit card. They have listed prices per bagel and I ordered baker's dozen expecting a price listed on the menu. But they charged extra because I had "speciality" bagel as part of my order. The bagel were fresh, good sized, and had variety. The employee was friendly. I would visit again because the bagels were good.

Food was fine. Service definitely could have been better. Server moved slow, got my order wrong, which I could understand as I asked for a bagel with cream cheese and a side of has browns, but she put the hash brown in the bagel. When I asked her where my hash brown wasz she just said it's in the bagel. I said that I had wanted it on the side and she just said sorry that's not what you said., didn't even offer to correct it. What kind of customer service is that?. Will not be visiting again.
