Kossar's Bagels & Bialys Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For true New Yorkers, the name Kossar’s is synonymous with a legacy that stretches back nearly a century. Established in 1936, Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys holds the prestigious title of being the oldest bialy bakery in the United States. While their roots are deeply planted in the Lower East Side, their expansion to the Upper East Side at 1409 York Avenue has brought a cherished piece of culinary history to a new generation of locals. This isn’t just another neighborhood bagel spot; it is a destination for those who appreciate the craft of traditional Jewish baking. In a city that is constantly changing, Kossar’s remains a steadfast guardian of the bialy—a savory, chewy, onion-flecked roll that serves as the soul of the establishment.

The vibe at the York Avenue location perfectly captures the essence of a modern New York eatery while paying homage to its heritage. It is a place where the air is thick with the comforting scent of toasted onions and fresh yeast, and the atmosphere is always lively with the energy of locals starting their day. Whether you are a connoisseur of the classic "schmear" or someone looking for a hearty, creative breakfast sandwich that will make you "do the Snoopy dance," Kossar’s offers an experience that is both professional and deeply personal. It is a business built on the belief that a bagel or bialy should be more than just a meal—it should be a memory of the city’s rich immigrant history and its unwavering commitment to food excellence.

Location and Accessibility

Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys is located at 1409 York Ave, New York, NY 10021, USA, situated prominently at the corner of York Avenue and East 75th Street. For residents of the Upper East Side, particularly those living in the Lenox Hill and Yorkville sections, this location provides a vital culinary anchor. While some visitors might find it a few blocks further east than their usual commute, the consensus among the community is that it is "definitely worth the trip." Being tucked away on York Avenue gives it a slightly more residential and neighborhood feel compared to the frantic pace of Lexington or 3rd Avenues, making it a favorite "hidden in plain sight" gem for locals.

Accessibility is straightforward for those navigating the neighborhood. The shop is a comfortable walk from the 72nd Street or 77th Street subway stations (servicing the Q and 6 trains, respectively). Additionally, the M15 and M31 bus lines provide convenient street-level access for those traveling north or south along the East Side. For those with a busy morning schedule, the shop is designed for efficiency, handling the morning rush with the kind of speed and precision only found in Manhattan. Its proximity to the various medical institutions in the area also makes it a popular stop for healthcare professionals looking for a reliable, high-quality breakfast or a world-class latte before their shifts begin.

What is worth choosing

If you are stepping into Kossar’s for the first time, you simply cannot leave without trying their namesake bialy. Unlike a bagel, a bialy is not boiled before baking, resulting in a matte, chewy crust and a center filled with roasted onions or garlic. The "Everything Bialy" is a local standout, offering a savory complexity that is hard to find elsewhere. It is best enjoyed with a light schmear of plain cream cheese to let the flavors of the dough and the onions take center stage. For those who prefer a more traditional bagel, their hand-rolled "Everything" or "Sesame" bagels are consistently excellent, providing that perfect New York "snap" in every bite.

For a more substantial meal, the signature breakfast sandwiches are highly recommended. A specific local favorite is the turkey bacon, egg, and cheese served on a blueberry bagel. While the combination might sound unconventional to outsiders, the sweet-and-savory profile is a revelation and has been known to inspire a "Snoopy dance" from satisfied customers. To complete your visit, pair your meal with one of their famous lattes. If you are shopping for the family, do not overlook the bakery case—the Babkas are legendary for their rich, swirled fillings, and the Black & White cookies are a quintessential New York dessert that Kossar’s executes to perfection. Whether you are eating in or taking a dozen bagels back home to Texas, selecting these staple items ensures you are getting the true Kossar’s experience.

Would you like me to find the current seasonal flavors for their Babkas or perhaps check their weekend hours for you?
