Zaro's Family Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For nearly a century, Zaro’s Family Bakery has been an inseparable part of the New York City landscape. What began in 1927 when Joseph Zaro arrived from Eastern Europe and opened his first storefront in the Bronx has evolved into a fourth-generation family-owned institution. For many New Yorkers, the sight of a Zaro’s counter is synonymous with the city's major transit hubs—Grand Central, Penn Station, and now, the modern and revitalized LaGuardia Airport. Located specifically in Terminal B at LaGuardia, this bakery serves as a welcoming gateway for travelers, offering a genuine "taste of home" before they board their flights or immediately upon their arrival in the five boroughs.
Zaro’s at LaGuardia Terminal B isn't just a convenience stop; it is a piece of culinary history. In an airport environment often dominated by national chains, Zaro’s stands out by maintaining its roots as a local, family-operated business. It specializes in the classics that have defined New York bakeries for decades: hand-twisted pretzels, crusty bagels, and the legendary black and white cookie. Whether you are a local resident heading out on a business trip or a visitor looking to grab one last authentic NYC treat, Zaro’s provides a reliable and nostalgic experience amidst the hustle and bustle of one of the world's busiest airports.
Location and Accessibility
Zaro's Family Bakery is located within Terminal B of LaGuardia Airport, Queens, NY 11371. As part of the award-winning redevelopment of Terminal B, the bakery is situated in a high-traffic concourse area that is easily accessible to passengers who have cleared security. Its location is strategically chosen to serve those waiting at nearby gates or those simply exploring the terminal's modern amenities, such as the famous floor-to-ceiling water feature.
Because it is located post-security, accessibility is exclusive to ticketed passengers and airport personnel. For those navigating the terminal, the bakery is a prominent fixture, often characterized by its inviting display cases and the aroma of fresh coffee and toasted bagels. While the airport environment can be hectic, Zaro’s is designed for efficiency, catering to the "grab-and-go" nature of travel. However, for those with a bit more time before their boarding call, the terminal offers ample seating nearby where you can sit and enjoy your meal while watching the planes on the tarmac.

Features / Highlights
Zaro’s Family Bakery at LaGuardia brings several unique highlights to the terminal dining experience:
- A Century of Tradition: Founded in 1927, the bakery brings four generations of family recipes and New York heritage to the airport.
- The "Official" Black and White Cookie: Zaro's is widely considered one of the most iconic producers of this two-toned New York staple, making it a must-try for any visitor.
- Freshly Baked Authenticity: Unlike many airport "kiosks," Zaro's prides itself on the quality of its baked goods, with many items reflecting the same recipes used in their Manhattan and Bronx locations.
- Commuter Efficiency: The staff is trained to handle the high-volume "rush hour" environment of an airport terminal, ensuring you don't miss your flight.
- Iconic Transit Hub Presence: As a brand found in Grand Central and Penn Station, it offers a sense of continuity and reliability for regular New York commuters.
- Kosher-Style Offerings: Continuing the tradition of its founders, the bakery offers many items that reflect the Jewish-American baking traditions of New York City.

What is worth choosing
If you have a layover or are waiting for your departure in Terminal B, the one item you absolutely must choose is a Zaro’s Black and White Cookie. It is the quintessential New York souvenir that travels well and tastes even better. These cookies are famous for their soft, cake-like base and the perfect split of chocolate and vanilla icing. For those who need a hearty breakfast to sustain them through a long flight, the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on an everything bagel is a top-tier choice. While airport pricing is naturally higher than a neighborhood bodega—often coming in around $50 for a full family breakfast spread including smoothies and coffee—the quality of the food at Zaro's is consistently rated as "pretty good" for an airport setting.
Another item worth choosing is the Lox Bagel Sandwich. It’s a sophisticated and filling option that feels much more like a "real meal" than standard airport fast food. Just be sure to allow a few extra minutes during the morning rush, as the popularity of their sandwiches can sometimes lead to a wait. If you are looking for something lighter, their croissants—specifically the chocolate croissant—are flaky and flavorful. Finally, don't overlook their "Cretzel," a unique Zaro's invention that combines the flakiness of a croissant with the shape and saltiness of a New York pretzel. It is a perfect snack to pair with a cold brew coffee as you watch the "New York, New York" themed fountain show in Terminal B. Choosing Zaro’s isn't just about eating; it’s about participating in a New York tradition that has been moving the city for nearly a hundred years.

Zaro's Family Bakery Reviews

I ordered a croissant with bacon egg and cheese, everything bagel with butter, 1 chocolate croissant, hot tea, cold brew ice coffee and a smoothie for just under $50. Kinda expensive. But we are in an airport. Food was actually pretty good. Not exactly happy with my bagel though, since they needed to toast it just to make it soft. But then all the butter melted before I could take a bite. Life is hard.

I grabbed a quick breakfast from this place during my travel from LGA. It was morning and so the place was crowded. The coffee was very usual. I got a lox bagel sandwich. The service was pretty slow ( or, maybe understaffed). I had to wait a bit longer time to get the sandwich. However, the sandwich was good.

I was at LGA recently on my way home from a funeral. I arrived around mid day and had time for one last coffee before my ride came to pick me up. This gave me a chance to relax after attending the funeral. I got an Americano and it was very good. Plenty of tables and chairs in the area including some with charging ports just in front of Zaro’s.

For being a famous family baker, the NY style crumb cake leaves a lot to be desired. A two-inch by two-inch stale piece of cake was over $7 with tax. Ouch. This cake better be big and awesome for that price.

A pretty solid Turkey Club Cristo for $17.55, ready in 2 minutes or so. Not bad for airport food, bacon was surprisingly cooked well also
