Audrey Introduce
In the heart of Manhattan’s most historic immigrant enclave, a new generation of culinary talent is redefining what it means to be a "neighborhood bakery." While many long-standing establishments in Chinatown lean heavily on nostalgia and decades-old recipes, Audrey Bakery & Cafe, located at 174 Canal Street, represents the "New Chinatown." It is a space where traditional techniques meet contemporary aesthetics, catering to a younger generation of New Yorkers and food enthusiasts who seek both high-quality ingredients and Instagram-worthy presentations. For those navigating the busy intersection of culture and commerce in Lower Manhattan, Audrey has quickly become a standout destination for those who want a taste of the future while respecting the roots of the past.
Often described by locals as one of the trendiest spots in the area, Audrey Bakery & Cafe has managed to bridge the gap between the classic "bun and tea" culture and the modern demand for artisanal pastries. The atmosphere inside is clean, bright, and modern, offering a stark but welcoming contrast to the frantic energy of Canal Street just outside its doors. Whether you are a student from nearby NYU, a professional working in the Civic Center, or a lifelong resident of the 10013 zip code, Audrey offers a sophisticated yet accessible experience that celebrates the evolution of Asian-American baking. It is a place where every item behind the glass reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and a deep understanding of the city's diverse palate.
Location and Accessibility
Audrey Bakery & Cafe is located at 174 Canal St, New York, NY 10013, USA. This prime location puts it directly on one of the most iconic thoroughfares in the world. Situated on the north side of Canal Street, between Elizabeth Street and Mott Street, it is perfectly positioned for those exploring the deep cultural history of Chinatown or the neighboring streets of Little Italy. The bakery is a central point for many who are traversing the neighborhood on foot, making it an ideal "pit stop" for a quick caffeine boost or a sweet treat.
Accessibility via public transportation is one of the location’s greatest strengths. The bakery is just a few blocks away from the Canal Street subway station complex, a major transit hub that connects the 6, J, Z, N, Q, R, and W lines. This means that whether you are coming from the Upper East Side, Brooklyn, or Astoria, getting to Audrey is straightforward. For those arriving from New Jersey or the outer boroughs via bus, several major lines stop within blocks of the bakery. While street parking on Canal Street is notoriously difficult and typically restricted, there are several parking garages within a five-block radius for those who must drive. However, like any true New Yorker, the best way to experience Audrey is as part of a walking tour through the vibrant streets of Lower Manhattan.
Services Offered
Audrey Bakery & Cafe provides a comprehensive range of services that cater to both the individual "grab-and-go" customer and those celebrating major life milestones. The establishment is designed for efficiency without sacrificing the personal touch that defines a local favorite. Their services include:
- Retail Pastry and Bread Sales: A wide daily selection of fresh buns, flaky pastries, and savory breads available for walk-in purchase.
- Custom Cake Ordering: Specialized services for birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations, with a particular reputation for beautiful, fruit-adorned designs.
- Professional Cake Consulting: A dedicated process for customers to place orders in advance, ensuring that "big day" cakes meet specific visual and flavor requirements.
- Full-Service Cafe: A menu featuring a variety of hot and cold beverages, including strong milk teas and coffees that pair perfectly with their baked goods.

Features / Highlights
What sets Audrey apart from the competition is a combination of its target audience, its aesthetic, and its uncompromising quality. Local patrons often highlight the following features as reasons for their loyalty:
- Modern Flavor Profiles: The bakery specializes in goods that cater to the younger generation’s taste, moving away from overly sweet or lard-heavy recipes toward lighter, refined flavors.
- Fresh Fruit Toppings: A hallmark of their cake design is the use of generous amounts of "real" fresh fruit, providing a natural sweetness and vibrant appearance that stands out in photos and on the palate.
- Nostalgia Meets Innovation: While it respects the tradition of bakeries like Taipan, Audrey is recognized as the "trendiest" alternative, offering a newer take on Asian-inspired sweets.
- Transparent Display: The clean, glass-fronted displays allow customers to see the freshness and artistry of every bun and cake before making a selection.
- Lard-Free Options: Catering to modern dietary preferences, the bakery often promotes breads that are free of traditional animal fats like lard, making them accessible to a wider range of customers.
- Hidden Gem Vibe: Despite its central location, it maintains a "hidden gem" reputation among those who appreciate finding high-quality artisanal goods off the beaten path of mainstream chains.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are a first-time visitor to Audrey, the selection can be beautifully overwhelming, but there are certain items that have earned legendary status among the Chinatown local community. The standout choice is undoubtedly the Strawberry Shortcake. Local parents and birthday celebrants frequently rave about the "Big 19" or "Big 20" celebrations made special by this specific cake. It is noted for being remarkably beautiful and, most importantly, topped with an abundance of real, fresh fruit—a feature that many local families appreciate for its quality and taste. The cake itself is light, airy, and not overly sweet, making it a sophisticated choice for any milestone birthday.
For those looking for a daily snack, the selection of fresh breads is where Audrey truly shines. Grabbing one or two of their savory or sweet buns is a great way to experience the bakery’s range. Whether it’s a classic milk bread or something more experimental, the textures are consistently soft and the flavors are balanced. Many regulars suggest that you "will be amazed" by the fluffiness and quality of the dough. Additionally, their milk tea and coffee are frequently cited as strong and flavorful, making for an excellent pairing with a mid-afternoon pastry. Whether you are going "all out" for a family member’s birthday or just treating yourself after a long day of shopping on Canal Street, choosing Audrey means choosing a modern standard of excellence in the heart of New York City.
In a city that never stops moving, Audrey Bakery & Cafe offers a moment of sweet reflection. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of the local bakery, evolved for the 21st century. The next time you find yourself in Chinatown, skip the chains and head to 174 Canal Street to experience a bakery that is as beautiful as it is delicious.

Taipan is a nostalgic bakery that serves classic Chinese pastries, while Audrey is the trendiest and most delicious bakery in Chinatown. Their baked goods cater to the younger generation’s taste. Try grab one or two breads from them, you will be amazed!

This is a hidden gem in Chinatown ! My oldest is obsessed with strawberry shortcake! I wanted to go all out for the big 19. I went with my middle son and placed an order. The next day on his official birthday I took my oldest and he was blown away how beautiful the cake was. We both were surprised about real fruits on top. I plan to be back my youngest son birthday!

small modern bakery planted on Canal Street in Chinatown. variety of baked items like cakes, mousses, croissants, sweet or savory rolls and more as well as coffees and tea drinks. interior is really clean and brightly lit. most of the bakery items are neatly organized throughout the store. got a savory garlic bread as well as a roll with a walnut filling. both were really well made with the bread part being soft and airy…and tasted freshly made. bring cash—they do accept debit / credit if your total is over $15 (no Amex). worthwhile stop if you’re in Chinatown and need some caffeine and calories to power your day.

Pretty decent bakery with enough selection. I had the Portuguese egg tart it was good but the shell was slightly oily. Taro pastry was ok but too sweet for me. It was a little bit artificial, not made with real taro.

I think this opens up pretty recently. I will give it a try on making a birthday cake and I wasn't wrong. The cashier in the front is super helpful because I am the only one there at the moment and the place looks like a self help bakery. You pick your favorite bread or cake and cash out at the front. I saw a lot of great design on cake here on the wall and a booklet as well. Sawing someone a picture of what I want and end up getting exactly as is, this only happens in Chinatown. Also that within 3 hours. You can't get that in much place in NYC. with a quick calculation, the price me pretty reasonably for a 6' inch custom cake with 2 flavors and filling. Over all appreciate the quick help and the cake is amazing according to the one who ate it.
