Carrot Top Pastries Introduce
In a city where food trends come and go with the seasons, Carrot Top Pastries stands as a steadfast landmark of authentic New York baking. Established in 1979, this legendary institution has spent decades earning its title as the home of the "Carrot Cake Queen." Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Washington Heights, just a stone's throw from the border of the Bronx, the bakery has become a cornerstone of the community. It is a place where the aroma of cinnamon and sugar greets you at the door, promising a level of homemade quality that is increasingly rare in the modern landscape of Upper Manhattan. Whether you are a local resident, a medical professional from the nearby New York-Presbyterian Hospital, or a dessert seeker traveling from across the five boroughs, Carrot Top Pastries offers a nostalgic and high-quality experience that defines the quintessential New York bakery.
The history of Carrot Top Pastries is deeply intertwined with the spirit of "Uptown" New York. Founded by Renee Mancino, the bakery quickly rose to fame not just for its signature carrot cake—once dubbed the best in the world by New York Times critics—but for its genuine connection to the people it serves. This isn't just a place to grab a quick treat; it is a full-service restaurant and bakery that has hosted everyone from local families celebrating birthdays to global icons like Stevie Wonder and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Despite its brush with fame, the bakery remains unpretentious and community-centric. It serves as a vital refuge for neighborhood patrons and visitors alike, offering a warm, inviting space where the legacy of the "Carrot Cake Queen" continues to thrive through meticulous craftsmanship and a commitment to serving "smiles" alongside its famous pastries.
Location and Accessibility
Carrot Top Pastries is prime real estate for anyone navigating Northern Manhattan, situated at 3931 Broadway, New York, NY 10032. Its location is strategically convenient, nestled right on the bustling corridor of Broadway near West 165th Street. This placement makes it an essential stop for staff, patients, and families at the New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center and the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, providing a much-needed "break from the ICU" with a comforting cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The bakery's proximity to the Bronx border also makes it a frequent destination for residents of the neighboring borough who are looking for high-quality baked goods within a short commute.
Accessibility is a breeze for those utilizing New York City’s public transit system. The bakery is just a short walk from the 168th Street subway station, which serves the A, C, and 1 trains, connecting it directly to the rest of Manhattan and Brooklyn. For those traveling by bus, multiple lines including the M4 and M5 run directly along Broadway, stopping nearly at the doorstep. If you are driving, the shop is easily reached via the George Washington Bridge or the Henry Hudson Parkway. While Manhattan parking can be a challenge, the quick-service nature of the shop makes it a viable spot for a rapid pickup. The storefront itself is welcoming and features indoor seating, a rare luxury for many New York bakeries, allowing patrons to sit, relax, and enjoy their treats in a homey atmosphere with warm lighting and comfortable furniture.

What is worth choosing
If it is your first time visiting, the Carrot Cake is the absolute non-negotiable choice. While some may find the frosting on the traditional slice to be quite sweet, it is the density and spice of the cake itself that has earned international acclaim. For a truly decadent twist, many regulars recommend the carrot cake slice completely covered in chocolate ganache—it is exceptionally rich and a perfect example of the bakery’s ability to innovate on a classic.
However, the hidden gem of the menu is undoubtedly the Rugelach. For those who find traditional rugelach a bit too dainty, Carrot Top’s version will be a revelation. These are substantial pastries that can easily be shared, though their "spot on" flavor often makes that difficult. The guava and carrot versions are particularly worth choosing as they offer a unique, tropical twist that you won't find in the standard bakeries of the Lower East Side or Brooklyn. Whether you are grabbing a quick mini-cake for a friend or sitting down for a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad before finishing with a cannoli, choosing Carrot Top Pastries means choosing a piece of genuine New York history. Would you like me to help you look up the current daily specials or their holiday hours for an upcoming visit?

I was in the area and looking for rugelach. I was surprised to find that they had it, AND that it was excellent! The rugelach are about 2-3x the size of the rugelach found at my normal spots in the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn. I have to say that the flavor is SPOT ON (I've had lots of rugelach LOL). I was surprised to try the guava and carrot versions of rugelach and they were as delicious as the more conventional chocolate and raspberry flavors. I also tried the slice of the carrot cake completely covered in chocolate ganache. That was also scrumptious and very rich. Everything I ordered easily be cut into smaller pieces and shared though to be honest, I probably wouldn't share my rugelach with anyone else (I brought my purchases home and slowly worked my way through them over a few days). I will DEFINITELY come back when I'm on that side of Manhattan or in The Bronx and craving rugelach. Note that there are some tables and chairs here so you can also eat here if you want. It was definitely a pleasant place to sit and have a treat.

Nice friendly staff but carrot cake I went for is a disappointment, frosting was hard and way too sweet with crystals, cake was dry. May I got a old piece but not what I expected since the place is named after carrot cake it's gotta be good but sadly it wasn't the case.

The carrot cake here is a must. Everytime we celebrate someone’s birthday or special occasion we will stop by here and get a Large carrot cake. The cake aren’t cheap either, they charge $60 for a large (FYI). I know that there’s a lot more options but I honestly haven’t tried anything else. I did see that they sell Carrot cake dipped in chocolate but I haven’t tried it yet. Overall great spot and will recommend it.

Very nice pastry/a restaurant. Came here for some coffee and a pastry decided to try the carrot muffin cause it’s the most popular pastry. The service was excellent and it was a really cold Saturday morning so of course it was nice and warm and the lighting was very nice and I would definitely recommend you go there. They have nice selection of cakes, town, Italian cookies and assortment of sliced cakes and assortment of cupcakes miscellaneouscookies and of course the pastries. Another go to in Hamilton Heights.
