J & M Bakery Introduce
Nestled in the heart of Long Island City, Queens, J & M Bakery serves as a vibrant gateway to the rich culinary traditions of South America, specifically focusing on the comforting and savory world of Colombian baked goods. For New Yorkers living in the 11106 zip code or commuting through the Astoria-LIC border, this local establishment has become a reliable destination for those seeking authentic flavors that go beyond the standard bagel and coffee routine. In a neighborhood undergoing rapid modernization, J & M Bakery maintains a sense of community and tradition, providing a warm atmosphere where the scent of freshly baked corn and cheese breads fills the air early each morning.
The bakery caters to a diverse crowd, ranging from local residents grabbing a quick breakfast before heading to the subway to food enthusiasts seeking out specific regional specialties like pan de bono and pan de yuca. While the city is full of high-end, minimalist cafes, J & M Bakery offers a more grounded and traditional experience. It is the kind of place where the quality of the product speaks through its heritage, offering a slice of Colombian culture to the bustling streets of New York. Whether you are a long-time fan of Latin pastries or a newcomer curious about the difference between a Colombian and a Caribbean empanada, this spot provides a welcoming entry point into the world of "panaderia" culture.
Location and Accessibility
J & M Bakery is conveniently located at 30-10 36th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11106, USA. Its position on 36th Avenue puts it right in the middle of a lively commercial strip that bridges the gap between the industrial areas of Long Island City and the residential charm of Astoria. This makes it an exceptionally accessible spot for both pedestrians and those utilizing the city’s extensive transit network.
For those using the New York City Subway, the bakery is just steps away from the 36th Avenue station, which is served by the N and W trains. This proximity makes it an ideal "grab-and-go" location for commuters. The surrounding area is flat and walkable, characteristic of this part of Queens, allowing for easy access for those on foot or with strollers. For visitors driving to the area, street parking is the primary option; as with most parts of Western Queens, it can be competitive during peak hours, but the bakery’s quick-service nature means that turnover is relatively high, often making it possible to find a spot for a quick pickup. The storefront is clearly marked and fits seamlessly into the vibrant, multi-ethnic fabric of the neighborhood.

What is worth choosing
When it comes to deciding what to order at J & M Bakery, the "star performers" are undoubtedly the cheese-based breads. Local regulars and reviewers consistently point to the Pan de Bono and Pan de Yuca as the absolute must-try items. Pan de bono, a small, round bread made from corn flour, cassava starch, and cheese, is best enjoyed while still warm from the oven, offering a soft, chewy interior with a slightly crisp exterior. Similarly, the Pan de Yuca provides a gluten-free option (though check with staff for cross-contamination) that is famous for its light, airy texture and savory cheese flavor. It is important to note that Yuca bread is at its absolute peak when fresh; if you are lucky enough to arrive when a new batch is pulled out, do not hesitate to grab several.
For those looking for something more substantial, the mixed empanadas are highly recommended. The Colombian-style beef and potato empanada, with its crunchy cornmeal crust, is a savory delight that pairs perfectly with their house-made spicy ají sauce if available. For vegetarians, the spinach and cheese empanada offers a rich and satisfying alternative. If you are a fan of strong coffee, their brew is the perfect companion to these savory snacks, providing the necessary kick to start a New York morning. One tip for visitors: because the bakery focuses on fresh turnover, it is best to visit during the morning or early lunch hours. Some patrons have noted that arriving too late in the afternoon can lead to a thinner selection, as their most popular items tend to sell out quickly. If you find the shelves looking a bit "cleared out," it’s often a testament to how quickly the locals snatch up the fresh bakes—simply ask the staff when the next tray is expected!

Maybe I am going at the wrong time, but the 2 times I stopped in, the place seemed cleaned out and a few measly bread pastries laying around. Disappointed as I was looking for cake or sweets

Pan de bono and pan de yuca are my personal favorites especially while fresh. Yuca bread gets stale fast. Mixed empanadas including spinach and cheese, Colombian style beef and potatoes. Prices are excellent and coffee is strong

A really nice place to stop by and have a snack. Food here is affordable and good. I usually prefer Dunkin Donuts across the street but the coffee here actually tastes more fresh sometimes. I would recommend the Arepa. I never had Arepa before and was surprised the bun wasn't wheat based but potato. The Empanadas are actually pretty good also. I prefer the beef but they also have chicken. The best time to come is probably early morning. A lot of the stuff goes stale by late noon. Not sure if they restock but the stale stuff is still tasty. Except for the cookies. Cookies are always good here. Management there is nice as well.

Empanadas are yummy. Coffee good and cheap. Chicharron is also yummy. Keep going. Ladys are very nice and polite.
