Le Fournil Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city filled with interpretations of European classics, Le Fournil stands as a remarkably authentic sanctuary for traditional French baking. Nestled in the historic East Village of Manhattan, this boulangerie and patisserie is the realization of a lifelong dream for owner Jean-François Hebert. A third-generation baker hailing from Normandy, Hebert brings a pedigree of craftsmanship that is palpable in every loaf and pastry produced. The bakery occupies a space with deep local roots—the former home of the legendary Moishe’s Bake Shop—and in a beautiful nod to neighborhood history, Hebert has preserved much of the original character of the century-old premises, including stunning gold-leaf tiles unearthed during renovation.
Le Fournil is more than just a place to grab a quick croissant; it is a dedicated "fournil" (the French term for the area where bread is kneaded and baked) that prioritizes the art of the boulanger. While many modern bakeries rely on par-baked goods or industrial shortcuts, Le Fournil remains committed to small-batch, artisanal production. The result is a menu that feels less like a commercial enterprise and more like a neighborhood shop in a quiet arrondissement of Paris. It has quickly become a favorite for both French expats seeking a taste of home and discerning New Yorkers who appreciate the difference that high-quality organic flour and patient fermentation make in a simple baguette.
Location and Accessibility
Le Fournil is conveniently located at 115 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003, situated between East 6th and East 7th Streets. Its position in the East Village makes it a central hub for the neighborhood's diverse community of artists, students, and long-time residents. The storefront is easily recognizable, maintaining a classic, understated charm that blends the Jewish bakery heritage of the building with a refined French aesthetic. For those navigating the city, it is a short walk from several major transit hubs, including the Astor Place station (6 train) and the 8th Street-NYU station (R and W trains), making it an accessible destination for a weekend pastry crawl or a weekday morning routine.
The shop itself offers a modest but welcoming footprint. While the interior features only a handful of tables, the layout is airy and inviting, often allowing customers to catch a glimpse of the baking process. On pleasant days, the two benches outside provide a quintessential New York experience: the chance to enjoy a fresh chouquette or a Plié au Chocolat while watching the vibrant life of 2nd Avenue pass by. Its proximity to Tompkins Square Park also makes it the perfect starting point for a picnic, as locals frequently stop by to pick up fresh baguettes and savory tarts before heading to the green space a few blocks away.

Features / Highlights
Le Fournil distinguishes itself through several unique attributes that create a holistic French experience in the heart of Manhattan:
- Generational Expertise: Jean-François Hebert’s background as a third-generation baker ensures that every recipe is rooted in authentic family traditions from Normandy.
- Historical Preservation: The shop features beautifully restored 1940s-era tiles and framed flour bags from the owner's grandfather’s shop, bridging the gap between New York history and French heritage.
- Artisanal Flour: The bakery uses high-quality organic flours to produce their signature sourdoughs and "Peasant Bread," resulting in superior flavor and nutrition.
- The "Typical" French Price Point: Offering items like large chouquettes for a very accessible price, providing a rare value in the often-expensive NYC bakery scene.
- Authentic Texture: Known specifically for their baguettes, which feature the classic thin, crispy crust and airy, honeycomb interior that is the hallmark of a true boulangerie.
- Friendly, Knowledgeable Staff: A team that is frequently praised for their warm service and ability to explain the nuances of traditional French pastries to newcomers.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Le Fournil, the bread is undoubtedly the star of the show. The traditional Baguette is widely considered one of the best in the city—so much so that surrounding restaurants rely on them for their own table service. If you are looking for a loaf with more complexity, the "7 Grains" sourdough or the "Peasant Bread" (80% white organic flour, 20% whole wheat) offers a fantastic crust and a deep, nutty flavor that pairs beautifully with French butter or cheese.
On the sweet side, the Canelé is a must-try for any fan of French patisserie. When done correctly, as it often is at Le Fournil, it offers a custardy, rum-and-vanilla-scented center encased in a dark, caramelized shell. For those who prefer flaky layers, the Plié au Chocolat (chocolate twist) and the Almond Croissant are highly recommended. A unique highlight is the Chouquette—light, airy pastry puffs topped with large granules of pearl sugar. At a price point that harkens back to Parisian prices, they are an addictive and affordable treat. While the coffee provides a reliable accompaniment to your pastry, the real magic here lies in the flour, water, and yeast, expertly handled by a master of the craft. Whether you are coming for a nostalgic taste of Europe or a fresh loaf for dinner, Le Fournil delivers a simple, high-quality pleasure that is truly "done right."

Not going to write much outside of this being my favorite French boulangerie/bakery in the city. Excellent canelé and a very solid Plié au Chocolat (i.e. chocolate twist) with other goodies as well. There's a reason why a lot of restaurants nearby use their baguettes as well due to their quality with the rest of the breads being good as well. Would recommend.

I’ve been looking for a typical French bakery, and as someone originally from Paris, I was really happy to find this spot. Back home, croissants are about €1, and I’ve gotten used to paying much higher prices in the U.S. — but I was pleasantly surprised to find a large chouquette for only $1! It was really good: light, fluffy, and just as it should be, with large pieces of sugar on top. I also tried what they called an almond croissant, though it was shaped more like a pain au chocolat — filled with both chocolate and almond. It was pretty good and I enjoyed it. The cannelé is usually my favorite French pastry. The inside texture was right, but the outside was much too hard — not the typical crust and really tough to bite. Maybe it was just that one batch. The cappuccino was fine — not a highlight, but decent. Coffee isn’t really the star here, and the portion was small, but they also sell a variety of French biscuits and grocery products, even things like Chocapic cereals ($13.95 here versus about €5 in France), which felt too pricey. There are just a few tables inside and a couple of benches outside. It was a sunny Saturday, eso I sat outside and enjoyed my treats for the most part. I wanted to try the pistachio croissant, but they weren’t making it that day. I’ll definitely come back to try other pastries — the apricot croissant looked especially tempting. Overall, I spent under $18 including tip, which felt like decent value for what I got. A nice little taste of France! 🇫🇷🥐

What a cute spot! I’ve walked by so many times and never went in, but I’m so glad I finally did. Huge bakery, amazing sandwiches—I had one of the best roast beef sandwiches I’ve had in a while. Super friendly staff and a really good coffee too. Definitely coming back and adding this to my regular rotation in the East Village.

Reviewing to add Le Fournil opened a brand new second location today at 1247 3rd Avenue (at 72nd) on the UES. Just as yummy, but with even more seating, ample large outlets for plugging in to get “work” done, lots of natural light, and a customer restroom! (Photos are from the new location which just opened TODAY!)

I really really really like this bakery. It’s my go to for baguettes and anything French. I lived in Paris for a couple of months and this Bakery Le Fournil is authentic to its core.
