Black Seed Bagels - Bushwick Introduce
In the competitive landscape of New York City’s breakfast culture, few items evoke as much passion as the humble bagel. While the city is filled with traditional "roll with a hole" shops, Black Seed Bagels has carved out a distinct niche by introducing a hybrid style that challenges the status quo. Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, the Suydam Street outpost of Black Seed Bagels offers a unique culinary experience that blends the best of New York’s doughy heritage with the artisanal, wood-fired techniques of Montreal. This isn't just another bagel shop; it is a destination for those who appreciate a thoughtfully crafted, slightly sweet, and perfectly charred crust that sets it apart from the standard city fare.
The Bushwick location perfectly mirrors the energy of its surroundings—a mix of industrial grit, artistic expression, and a growing community of food lovers. As a professional content writer focused on the New York market, I see Black Seed as a "neighborhood fuel station" that serves more than just food. It acts as a communal hub where the staff’s positive attitude and the carefully curated music create a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are a local heading to Maria Hernandez Park or a visitor exploring the legendary street murals of North Brooklyn, the shop offers a modern yet rooted experience that emphasizes transparency, quality, and a commitment to doing things the "hard way" for the sake of better flavor.
Location and Accessibility
Black Seed Bagels – Bushwick is centrally located at 3379 Suydam St, Brooklyn, NY 11237, USA. Its position in the heart of Bushwick makes it a strategic stop for anyone navigating this rapidly evolving part of the borough. The shop is situated just blocks away from iconic neighborhood landmarks such as Maria Hernandez Park and the House of Yes, making it an ideal anchor point for a day of local exploration. For residents living in the lofts and townhomes nearby, it is a convenient daily ritual, while for those coming from other parts of Brooklyn or Manhattan, the shop is easily reached via the L train (stopping at Jefferson St or Morgan Ave) and several local bus lines.
The accessibility of the Suydam Street location extends beyond its physical footprint. The shop is designed to cater to the fast-paced lifestyle of New Yorkers, offering efficient walk-up service as well as robust options for digital orders. While the neighborhood is known for its bustling street life, the bakery provides a relatively quiet and relaxing interior where customers can wait for their orders while enjoying the open-kitchen concept. This transparency allows visitors to see the wood-fired ovens in action, bridging the gap between the customer and the artisan process. For those who prefer the convenience of home dining, the shop maintains strong partnerships with major delivery platforms to serve the wider 11237 area and beyond.
Services Offered

Features / Highlights
The hallmark of Black Seed Bagels is its refusal to be "basic." By combining the techniques of two world-class bagel cities, they have created a product that is both a conversation starter and a comfort food. Key highlights of the Bushwick location include:
- NYC-Montreal Hybrid Style: Smaller, denser, and sweeter than a traditional NYC bagel, with a signature charred crust from the wood oven.
- James Beard-Nominated Leadership: Under the guidance of Executive Chef Dianna Daoheung, the bakery maintains high standards of culinary innovation and execution.
- Community Involvement: The shop is deeply rooted in the local area, partnering with organizations like the Good Good Collective and the Bushwick School of Arts to support community initiatives.
- Sustainability Commitment: Black Seed is a leader in reducing food waste, redirecting tons of surplus food from landfills through innovative partnerships.
- Open Kitchen Experience: Customers can watch the entire process, from the boiling vats to the hand-turned wooden peels in the roaring oven.
- Artisan Collaborations: Frequent limited-time collaborations with other food brands, such as their popular cream cheese made with Fly By Jing Sichuan Chili Crisp.
- Atmosphere and Vibe: Known for a great music selection and a staff that genuinely enjoys the working environment, contributing to a superior customer service experience.

What is worth choosing
If you are a newcomer to the Black Seed experience, navigating the menu can be an exciting challenge. The absolute standout item, and a favorite among regulars, is the Sesame Bagel. Because it is boiled in honey water and wood-fired, the sesame seeds become deeply toasted and nutty, providing a perfect contrast to the chewy interior. Pairing this with their Tofu Cream Cheese is a popular choice for those seeking a "fresh, fluffy, and creamy" dairy-free option. For a more traditional New York experience with a twist, the BEC (Bacon, Egg, and Cheese) on an everything bagel is a top-tier choice, especially since they use pasture-raised eggs that provide a richer, more vibrant yolk than standard deli fare.
For those looking for something truly unique to the Black Seed brand, the "Classic 2.0" is a must-try. It features pastrami-spiced salmon, scallion cream cheese, pickled green tomatoes, and red onions, offering a complex, smoky, and tangy profile that you won't find at a typical neighborhood bagel shop. If you’re in the mood for a beverage, the iced chai with oat milk has earned high praise for its balance and preparation. While delivery is a convenient option, many locals recommend visiting in person to ensure you get your bagel at the peak of its wood-fired warmth. Whether you are choosing a single bagel with a simple schmear or a multi-layered signature sandwich, you are supporting a business that values the intersection of artisanal tradition and modern Brooklyn community values.

Absolutely LOVED the iced chai with oat milk prepared by Dani who also a great attitude & gave amazing service. I got the sesame bagel with tofu cream cheese & it was very delicious, fresh, fluffy & creamy!! My friend got the sausage egg & cheese on a sesame bagel & that looked sooo delicious! My favorite part about this business is that they are very involved in the community & partner with an awesome non profit organization called the Good Good collective & the bushwick school of arts! Definitely a place I’m happy to patron. Also as soon as you walk in you can tell all the employees enjoy working here & the music is a huge plus!

I ordered my lunch bagel from this place through UberEats. I hadn’t checked the Google reviews beforehand — turns out they’re not great — but since the ratings on UberEats were much better, I decided to give it a try. I ordered an everything bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese (upgraded from the regular). Unfortunately, the experience was pretty average. The order took quite a while to prepare and deliver, and by the time it arrived, the bagel was cold — even though it seemed like it had been toasted originally. The bagel itself was okay, but the amount of lox was minimal and not of great quality — definitely not the rich, smoky kind you’d expect in New York. There were some capers, tomato, and red onion, but overall it felt very basic and underwhelming. In a city known for great bagels, this one didn’t quite measure up. I’ve had far better lox and cream cheese bagels elsewhere in NYC, so I probably wouldn’t reorder from here.

I really want to love Black Seed Bagels – Bushwick, because the managers and staff I’ve interacted with have genuinely been kind. That said, I feel compelled to leave this review because there have been repeated and concerning inconsistencies with gluten-free labeling on delivery orders. On at least three separate occasions, either I or my husband have ordered nearly identical items — Boca bagels — with one clearly marked gluten-free and the other regular. Despite this, the orders have arrived unlabeled, making it impossible to safely determine which bagel is gluten-free and which is not. When you’re dealing with an allergy or medical dietary restriction, this isn’t a small oversight — it’s a serious issue. They tell me that the GF bagels are “significantly smaller” than the regular, but that just hasn’t been my experience when I’ve received correct orders in the past. I appreciate the kindness of the management, but consistency and accuracy around allergens are critical, especially when orders are placed through Seamless or Uber Eats where there’s no in-person clarification. If you are ordering from here and have a gluten allergy or sensitivity, I strongly recommend calling the restaurant directly to confirm labeling before eating. I hope this feedback helps improve their systems, because the food is good — but safety and trust matter more. And sadly, they have lost my trust.
