I was feeling a bit peckish and craving something sweet when I stumbled upon Luna’s Bakery, and I’m so glad I did. I found out it’s an authentic Mexican bakery, and the experience felt both simple and charming. The bakery is self-serve. You walk in, grab a tray, parchment paper, and tongs, then choose your pastries directly from the shelves. I couldn’t resist trying a concha, an oreja, and a rollo de piña. The concha was delightfully fluffy, lightly sweet, and topped with a perfectly crumbly sugar crust. The oreja was large, beautifully flaky, and just the right amount of sweet. The rollo de piña was another standout. It was flaky and sugary with a delicious pineapple filling that really shined. I washed it all down with a black coffee, which paired perfectly with the pastries. Bakery itself is small with the ambiance quiet, and relaxing, making it a nice stop for a peaceful treat. There’s no seating inside, so plan on taking everything to go. Service is mostly self-serve, except for drinks and select pastries behind the counter. I’d absolutely come back to try more of the baked goods, there’s plenty more here that caught my eye. - Phil W

What is worth choosing

When you find yourself at Luna’s Bakery, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming, but there are several standout items that come highly recommended by regular patrons. The Concha is perhaps the most iconic choice; it is delightfully fluffy and topped with a perfectly balanced sugar crust. It is a staple of Mexican baking, and Luna’s version captures the ideal texture that makes it a favorite for dipping into coffee or hot chocolate. If you are looking for something with a satisfying crunch, the Oreja (which translates to "ear") is a must-try. These palmier-style pastries are large, flaky, and caramelized to a beautiful golden brown, providing a sweet and crispy treat that is hard to put down.

For those who enjoy fruit-filled pastries, the Rollo de Piña is a standout selection. This roll features a flaky, sugary exterior that gives way to a vibrant and delicious pineapple filling. The sweetness of the fruit is perfectly complemented by the buttery layers of the dough. Additionally, the savory-sweet balance of the traditional bread with cheese inside is an excellent choice for those who prefer a more complex flavor profile. This bread is fresh and soft, offering a comforting snack that is both filling and flavorful. No matter what you choose, pairing your selection with a simple black coffee is highly recommended, as the bitterness of the coffee beautifully cuts through the sugar of the pastries, making for a truly harmonious New York morning treat. With so many options available, each visit offers a new opportunity to discover a different facet of traditional Mexican baking.
