Martha's Country Bakery Introduce
In the heart of Astoria, Queens, where the culinary scene is as diverse as the city itself, Martha's Country Bakery has long stood as a prominent landmark for those with a sweet tooth. Located on the vibrant Ditmars Boulevard, this bakery is part of a small, beloved local chain that has woven itself into the fabric of the neighborhood. Known for its extensive display cases filled with an overwhelming variety of treats, it serves as a common meeting ground for New Yorkers seeking a late-night sugar fix, a cozy spot for a first date, or a reliable source for a celebration cake. The atmosphere strikes a balance between a rustic country kitchen and a high-energy urban cafe, reflecting the fast-paced yet community-oriented spirit of Astoria.
Martha's Country Bakery is an institution that elicits strong feelings from its patrons. To some, it is a sentimental favorite that has provided the centerpiece for countless birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones. To others, it is a bustling hub where the hum of conversation and the aroma of freshly ground coffee provide a quintessential New York backdrop. While the city is full of artisanal startups and minimalist bakeries, Martha's maintains a "more is more" philosophy, offering a menu so vast that it can take several minutes just to read through the options listed behind the counter. This commitment to variety and its late-night operating hours have made it a staple of the local nightlife, offering a caffeinated alternative to the many bars and restaurants that line the surrounding streets.
Location and Accessibility
The bakery is perfectly positioned at 36-21 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105, USA. For residents of Northern Astoria, the location is unbeatable. Ditmars Boulevard is one of the most pedestrian-friendly stretches in Queens, filled with specialty boutiques, grocery stores, and eateries. Martha's sits right in the thick of this action, making it an easy stop for locals finishing up their grocery shopping or heading home from work. Its proximity to Astoria Park—just a few blocks to the west—also makes it a popular destination for those looking to grab a coffee and a pastry before a walk along the East River.
Accessibility for those coming from outside the immediate neighborhood is straightforward. The N and W subway lines terminate at the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station, which is just a short, two-block walk from the bakery's front door. This makes it a convenient trip for dessert seekers from Manhattan or other parts of Queens. Like much of Astoria, street parking can be a significant challenge, especially on weekends and evenings, so public transit or local ride-share services are often the most stress-free ways to reach the shop. The storefront is highly visible, often marked by a line of people waiting for a table or a quick take-out order, signaling its status as a local destination.

Features / Highlights
What keeps Martha's Country Bakery at the forefront of the Astoria food scene are several defining characteristics that make every visit memorable. Highlights include:

- Cozy, Rustic Ambiance: The interior features warm wood accents and a "country" aesthetic that provides a nostalgic contrast to the urban surroundings.
- Warm Service: Many items, particularly certain cookies and pies, are served warm upon request, enhancing the flavor and the "comfort food" experience.
- Milestone Tradition: For many local families, the bakery is the exclusive provider for celebratory cakes, earning a place of trust within the community.

What is Worth Choosing
With such an expansive menu, deciding what to order at Martha's can be a daunting task. However, based on years of local feedback and recurring customer favorites, there are a few standouts that are widely considered "worth the calories." The undisputed star for many is the Stuffed Peanut Butter Cookie. Served warm, this cookie features a gooey, liquid peanut butter center that provides a rich and satisfying experience. It is often cited as the highlight of the menu, even by those who find other desserts hit-or-miss. The warmth of the cookie paired with the salty-sweet center makes it a quintessential Martha's treat.
For those looking for something more substantial, the bakery’s selection of cakes is a primary draw. While individual experiences vary, their red velvet and fudge-based cakes are popular choices for those who enjoy traditional, decadent frosting. If you are a fan of cheesecake, the bakery offers several variations, though local opinions on the texture can vary, making it a choice for those who prefer a more dense, New York-style slice. Beyond the cakes, the bakery's "berry Napoleon" and various fruit pies are excellent choices for those seeking something slightly lighter but still indulgent. Regardless of your choice, pairing your dessert with a cup of their robust coffee is highly recommended, as the bitterness of the brew balances the high sugar content of the pastries perfectly. Whether you are a first-timer or a lifelong fan, choosing Martha's means stepping into a piece of Astoria history and indulging in a tradition that has satisfied New Yorkers for decades.

Cramped seating with mediocre desserts. We had the cheesecake, fudge cake, and stuffed peanut butter cookie. The best by far was the stuffed peanut butter cookie. It was served warm with lots of gooey peanut butter in the center. It was pretty good! The fudge cake was dry and stiff like it was sitting in the case for a week. The frosting was good though. My husband didn’t think the cheesecake was good. I’d possibly give it another shot and order another peanut butter cookie, but won’t go out my way to come again.

My Absolute Favorite Cake Shop in the USA! 🎂✨ I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is, without a doubt, my favorite cake shop in the entire country. They have been a part of every major milestone in my life, and they never fail to impress.

please note all the toppers I PROVIDED. I Got a cake for my daughter’s birthday, they forgot to write the message i gave. Day of pick up i had to ask for it… they wrote it in a blue i did not ask for and wrote it on top when i specifically asked for it on the front because i had toppers. please note i was not charged extra for the “decorations” I tried to order another cake today- asked for an explanation of the “extra” charges for decorating the cake… they said anything more would be extra. not sure how that makes sense if you’re ordering a custom cake it shouldn’t start at $60 if that’s the case. so you’re going to give me a cake with no piping just flat starting at $60? with all that being said i was going to pay it because i actually like their cake and i wanted it… but..the manager was rude and it caused me to just walk out. there’s way too many bakeries out here to feel disrespected while also pay $120 for an 8 inch heart cake with simple piping. you guys need to reevaluate how you treat people. i was dismissed when i walked up to the manager, she was sitting where i was told to order the cake last time. she told me i had to wait for someone to come to me (wait for the teens that work their to finish their convo) the place was empty. she went back to her phone. and then surprise had to come help me anyway.

I recently stopped into Martha’s Country Bakery in Astoria and tried a few desserts. I had the Vegan Carrot Cake ($9.75 per slice), the Nutty Apple Cheesecake ($7.95), and the Pecan Cheesecake Bar ($7.95). The cheesecakes were absolutely incredible—rich, creamy, and easily some of the best I’ve ever had. That said, the price point felt a little steep for a single slice/bar, especially compared to other bakeries in the area. The Vegan Carrot Cake, on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown. The cake itself was decent, but the icing lacked that classic cream cheese flavor that really makes carrot cake shine. It felt like it was missing the signature element that makes the dessert so memorable. Overall, it’s a nice spot if you’re looking for some excellent cheesecake and don’t mind paying premium prices. For me, it landed in the middle—great quality in some areas, but not consistent enough across the board to rate higher

Stopped by Martha’s Country Bakery and got a slice of Triple Chocolate cake. The flavor was rich, with a nice balance of sweetness and cocoa bitterness. The cake was fresh and had a soft texture. I was pleased with it.
