Miss Madeleine Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For those seeking a genuine slice of Paris in the heart of Manhattan, Miss Madeleine is a destination that transcends the typical New York bakery experience. Located on a quiet stretch of the Upper East Side, this charming boutique establishment has become a beacon for lovers of authentic French pastry. Founded by Gerald and Peggy Hudeau, who brought their culinary heritage from Guadeloupe via Paris to New York, the bakery represents a dream realized against the odds. The shop’s identity is deeply rooted in the "savoir-faire" of traditional French baking, where time-honored techniques meet a modern, neighborhood-centric warmth.
As you approach the storefront at 400 East 82nd Street, you are often met by a delightful sight: three giant teddy bears "guarding" the entrance, a whimsical touch that hints at the bakery's friendly, family-run atmosphere. Inside, the space is intimate and efficient, dominated by the intoxicating aroma of butter and sugar. Miss Madeleine has earned its reputation not through flashy marketing, but through the consistent quality of its "viennoiseries" and its namesake specialty—the madeleine. It is a place where neighbors greet each other by name and visitors are often surprised by the sheer artistry packed into such a cozy, pink-accented storefront.
Location and Accessibility
Miss Madeleine is located at 400 E 82nd St, New York, NY 10028, USA, positioned on the corner of 82nd Street and First Avenue. This location places it perfectly within the residential fabric of Yorkville, making it a staple for local families and professionals. While the interior is strictly for ordering and browsing—meaning there is no indoor seating—the bakery makes the most of its New York footprint with a few small tables outside for those who wish to enjoy their treats immediately.
For those coming from other parts of the city, accessibility is straightforward. The bakery is a manageable walk from the 86th Street Subway Station, serving the Q line on Second Avenue, as well as the 4, 5, and 6 lines on Lexington Avenue. Several bus routes, including the M15 and M15-SBS along First and Second Avenues, stop just steps away. A local tip for visitors: because of the limited seating, many patrons choose to take their "little French delights" a few blocks east to Carl Schurz Park. There, you can enjoy your pastry while sitting along the bank of the East River, creating a picturesque New York moment that feels remarkably like a day on the Seine.

Features / Highlights
What defines Miss Madeleine is its commitment to the small details that elevate a simple bakery visit into a memorable experience. Here are the highlights that make it a standout on the Upper East Side:
- Authentic Madeleines of Commercy: Staying true to their name, the bakery produces handmade madeleines that are meltingly soft and available in flavors like plain, chocolate, and lemon.

- The Giant Teddy Bear Sentinels: The oversized bears at the entrance have become a local landmark, providing a welcoming and photogenic entrance for children and adults alike.
- Small-Batch Savories: Beyond sweets, the bakery is highly regarded for its savory "French Favorites," including various quiches and Croque Monsieurs.
- Traditional Caneles: A specialty from the Bordeaux region, these treats feature a thick, caramelized crust and a tender, custardy center.
- Intimate Atmosphere: The bakery manages to provide a high-end Parisian experience within a small, friendly "mom-and-pop" setting that avoids the coldness of larger franchises.

What is worth choosing
If you are visiting Miss Madeleine for the first time, the Chocolate Croissant (Pain au Chocolat) is an absolute must-order. It is a masterclass in French pastry, featuring dark chocolate tucked into layers of flaky, golden dough. For those who prefer a savory start, the Ham and Cheese Quiche is a revelation; it is creamy, well-seasoned, and features a crust that is perfectly baked. Locals also rave about the Spinach and Bacon Quiche for a substantial lunch option.
Naturally, you cannot leave without a Bag of 6 Madeleines. These are the heart of the shop—delicate, buttery, and just the right amount of sweet. If you are feeling adventurous, the French Style Cheesecake offers a lighter, more refined texture than the traditional New York version, making it a perfect afternoon indulgence. For a unique caffeinated pairing, try the Earl Grey Latte with bergamot essence—it provides a floral sophistication that matches the bakery’s aesthetic. A final tip for the savvy New Yorker: try to arrive before noon, as the most popular croissant varieties are known to sell out early due to the loyal local following. Whether you’re grabbing a quick snack or a full quiche for a picnic, Miss Madeleine delivers an authentic taste of France that is well worth the visit. Would you like me to help you plan a full French-themed afternoon in the 10028 area?

The line of people standing at the entrance waiting to get into this small establishment and the mouth watering aroma of freshly baked goods that surrounds the store are two unmistakable signs for a great experience: the croissants here are arguably the best in this part of the city. Once you get past the 3 giant teddy bears that guard the entrance, you'll find here a variety of French baked goods. There are only very few places to sit outside (none indoors) so you can grab your little French delight and walk a few blocks east to enjoy it sitting along the bank of the East river.

The best thing I can say about Miss Madeleine is that it’s a lovely bakery. I have only been there a few times but everything I bought have been amazing. I loved how they put pictures of people’s pets on their wall. It’s so charming. When I come to a bakery like this, it’s so hard to decide what to get because I want everything. Lol! On my first visit I got a chocolate croissant and a slice of the French style cheesecake. Both were very tasty. Recently I bought a slice of the ham and cheese quiche. I took a taste of it and it was delicious. I intend to come to this bakery on a regular basis.

I go on Saturdays to a farmers market at 82 street and first avenue. The farmers market has an Amish and green vegetables market.. I like the ones inside gate. If you want no hassle bring your cash. Outside the gate Ms Madeline is a nice welcome for regulars. Is small, two step to the small bakery. Always crowded on Saturdays. I recommend it.

I had the pear/almond tart, it was delicious (see photo). The tart's dominant flavor is not from almonds themselves, but from what seems like almond flavor enhanced dough. On another day I tried their banana bread which has a lot of chocolate chips in it. It was a nice blend of the two flavors making for a pleasing dessert. The blending was such that it was hard to tell which of the two flavors dominated, if either.

Pretty little bakery with awesome madeleines! Nearly as good as the originals. Service is super lovely. Online minus point, no nice place to sit. Will definitely come back.
