East Side Bagel & Appetizing Introduce
In the competitive landscape of Manhattan breakfast spots, East Side Bagel & Appetizing has carved out a reputation as a steadfast provider of the quintessential New York morning experience. Located at 1496 1st Ave, this establishment serves the Upper East Side community with a commitment to the "appetizing" tradition—a term historically used to describe shops that sell "the foods that go with bagels," specifically fish and dairy. For locals navigating the 10075 zip code, this shop represents a reliable intersection of speed, variety, and authentic flavor, maintaining the gritty yet charming atmosphere that defines the city's most beloved neighborhood delis.
Walking into East Side Bagel & Appetizing, you are immediately met with the comforting sights and smells of a traditional New York storefront. The shop balances its "grab-and-go" efficiency with a welcoming neighborhood vibe, featuring a long deli counter packed with house-made spreads and premium cold cuts. Unlike modern, minimalist boutiques, this shop embraces its identity as a functional, high-traffic hub where the clacking of coffee cups and the rhythmic slicing of lox provide a backdrop to the daily commute. It is the kind of place where the staff remembers the orders of regulars, yet remains accessible and friendly to those visiting for the first time.
Location and Accessibility
East Side Bagel & Appetizing is prominently situated at 1496 1st Ave, New York, NY 10075, USA, specifically on the corner of 1st Avenue and East 78th Street. This location is a strategic asset for residents of the Yorkville and Lenox Hill areas. For those commuting via public transportation, the shop is exceptionally convenient; it is just a short walk from the 77th Street subway station, which serves the 6 train. Additionally, the M15 and M15-SBS bus lines run directly along 1st Avenue, dropping passengers nearly at the shop's doorstep. This makes it a perfect pit stop for those heading downtown or for medical professionals working at the nearby hospital complexes such as Lenox Hill Hospital and New York-Presbyterian.
For those who prefer to travel on foot, the shop is nestled in a highly walkable section of the Upper East Side. It is only a few blocks away from the scenic John Jay Park and the East River Esplanade, making it an ideal destination to pick up supplies for an outdoor breakfast or lunch. While the shop is primarily designed for quick service, it does offer a selection of seating—including cozy leather chairs and window stools—for those who have a few moments to linger over their coffee. The accessibility of the storefront, combined with its prominent corner presence, ensures that it remains a central pillar of the local commercial corridor.

What is worth choosing
When ordering at East Side Bagel & Appetizing, the true standouts are found in the "appetizing" portion of their menu. The Nova Scotia Salmon Platter is highly recommended for those who want to experience the shop's roots. The salmon is expertly sliced—silky and thin—paired perfectly with a fresh bagel and a side of their scallion or vegetable cream cheese. For a more unique experience, the Smoked Whitefish Salad or the Chunky Whitefish Salad offers a savory, smoky depth that is a staple of traditional New York Jewish-style cuisine.
If you are looking for a classic breakfast, the 2 Eggs with Bacon and Cheese on an Everything Bagel is the most frequently ordered item for a reason. The bagels here are known for being large, chewy, and possessing a satisfying salt-to-seed ratio. For those with specific dietary preferences, their vegan tofu cream cheese is a surprisingly high-quality alternative that holds its own against the traditional dairy options. For lunch, the "N.Y. Reuben" combo sandwich—piled high with corned beef, hot sauerkraut, and melted Swiss—is a hearty choice that reflects the shop’s deli expertise. Whether you are grabbing a quick coffee and a "grab-and-go" plain bagel or sitting down for a full brunch special, the consistency of the food and the friendliness of the service make it a "10/10 recommendation" for anyone in the neighborhood.
In summary, East Side Bagel & Appetizing remains a vital part of the Upper East Side's culinary fabric. It provides exactly what a local New Yorker looks for: a no-nonsense environment, high-quality ingredients, and a menu that respects tradition while catering to modern convenience. For those living near 78th and 1st, or those just passing through, it is a destination that delivers on the promise of a "beautiful experience" every time. It is a place where the bagels are hot, the fish is fresh, and the service is fast—exactly as it should be in the greatest city in the world.

You can’t really complain about a place like this. A classic grab and go bagel shop, but options for seating. It’s a bit pricey, but the classic bagels with cream cheese are great.

Me and my brother have been eating here for years but past year or so quality has dropped drastically, check out this 9 dollar sausage egg and cheese. Their bagels are awful compared to Kossars or the one on 2nd ave. I am very disappointed because they used to be quality but now they are less than mid.

No one else was in the store when I got a bagel with scal cream cheese, per usual ordering and chatting with the guy by the bagels. Once I said what I wanted he walked us over so I could pay (and tip which I did not) the $6, and then he went back to make the bagel--an atypical order of events. Upon eating the bagel I see the skimpiest amount of cream cheese. Not a great experience.

Wandered into this spot on my walk and it did not disappoint! The bagels were EXCELLENT! Fresh and crisp on the outside while nice and fluffy on the inside. The perfect amount of cream cheese (a lot). The guys behind the counter were super nice and the service was friendly. Ate my bagel by the windo, watching the world not come in for these bagels. Also, food is halal if anyone is looking for a spot!
