Black Star Bakery & Cafe Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the vibrant tapestry of the Upper East Side, Black Star Bakery & Cafe has emerged as a quintessential neighborhood sanctuary. Located at 1597 York Avenue, this establishment is more than just a typical New York coffee shop; it is a meticulously designed space where artisanal baking meets a relaxed, community-focused atmosphere. Since its expansion into the UES, Black Star has built a reputation for providing high-quality, handcrafted goods in a setting that feels both sophisticated and incredibly welcoming. The cafe’s aesthetic—clean, beautiful, and slightly "funky"—strikes a perfect balance between modern Manhattan chic and a cozy, lived-in comfort that invites patrons to linger over their morning brew.
The philosophy at Black Star Bakery & Cafe centers on the idea of the "perfect moment." Whether it’s the crunch of a freshly baked croissant or the warmth of a perfectly pulled espresso shot, every detail is considered. One of the most endearing features of the shop is its playful yet poignant signage, including the popular "Talk to each other. Pretend it’s the 90s" message, which perfectly encapsulates the shop’s desire to foster real-world connection in an increasingly digital city. For locals and visitors alike, Black Star serves as a "hidden gem" where the bustling energy of York Avenue fades into the background, replaced by the sounds of chirping birds in the backyard and the inviting aroma of sweet and savory pastries.
Location and Accessibility
Situated at 1597 York Ave Store 2, New York, NY 10028, Black Star Bakery & Cafe occupies a prime spot on the Upper East Side. It is nestled between 84th and 85th Streets, making it a convenient destination for residents of Yorkville and those exploring the eastern reaches of Manhattan. Its location is strategically placed away from the overwhelming crowds of the main avenues, offering a quieter, more authentic neighborhood vibe that UES residents cherish.
Accessibility is a key advantage for this location. For those utilizing public transportation, the bakery is within walking distance of the 86th Street Subway Station, serving the Q line (Second Avenue Subway) and providing a direct link to Midtown and Brooklyn. Additionally, the M15 and M15-SBS bus lines run along Second and First Avenues, making north-south travel effortless. The M86-SBS crosstown bus also provides easy access for those coming from the West Side or closer to Central Park. The storefront is street-level and wheelchair accessible, and for those driving, paid street parking is generally available in the surrounding blocks. Perhaps its best-kept secret is the spacious layout, which includes both front seating and an amazing outdoor patio area, rare for the densest parts of the city.

What is worth choosing
When you walk into Black Star Bakery & Cafe, the sheer variety of the display case can be overwhelming, but a few items have achieved "must-try" status among the UES regulars. If you are looking for a savory start to your day, the Breakfast Burrito is frequently cited as one of the best in the city—it is substantial, perfectly seasoned, and incredibly satisfying. For a lighter but equally flavorful savory option, the Prosciutto and Cheese Sandwich or the #2 Avocado Toast (with feta and grape tomatoes on eight-grain bread) are excellent choices that showcase the freshness of their ingredients.
On the sweet side, the Belgian Waffle with fresh berries and whipped cream is a standout, particularly when enjoyed in the backyard patio. If you are just stopping by for a pastry, don't miss the Almond Croissant or the Nutella Hazelnut Croissant; they are noted for their buttery, flaky layers and rich fillings. To wash it all down, their Iced Cappuccino or a strong Hot Americano provides the perfect caffeinated kick. For those who enjoy a unique twist on a classic, the Matcha Lemonade offers a perfect balance of earthy and sweet, making it a refreshing choice during the warmer New York months. No matter what you choose, the combination of fair pricing, high-quality food, and a genuine neighborhood feel makes Black Star Bakery & Cafe a definitive 10/10 destination on the Upper East Side. Clean, beautiful café with a cozy interior and affordable prices. Great spot with a patio. I especially loved the sign there: “Talk to each other. Pretend it’s the 90s” — such a nice touch that adds to the atmosphere. The coffee was good. I had an iced cappuccino. The prosciutto with cheese sandwich was big and filling. A real hidden gem on the Upper East Side. Highly recommend!

Black Star really is a star! The cozy backyard, with the chirping birds makes it the perfect spot to unwind or relax. The staff are genuinely kind and make the experience even better. My go to is the waffle with fresh berries and whipped cream, paired with a strong hot americano. Their pastries? Dangerously addictive. Love this place definitely a must try! 10/10

Easily one of the go-to spots I've used for coffee across the last year. Between their front and back areas, the spacious location is consistently clean and easy to find somewhere to sit. Their coffee is by far some of the best, and this is in a location where they are competing with Mellow Yellow, Elly's, and Padoca! Above everything else, their staff is incredibly friendly and makes an active effort to keep the place clean. I love the variety of food that they have across seasons and the amount of care that the staff provides to their regulars is really wonderful too. Overall, the vibe of this place is amazing and the staff always maintain composure to create a welcoming environment. Have to credit this team for how well they treat everyone.

I'm so happy I recently discovered this charming coffee shop -now I stop by after my morning walk :) They have fantastic matcha and delicious pastries, and there's a breakfast/brunch menu I'd love to try! UPD 7/22: The smoked salmon toast was out of this world!! There's such a cute backyard where I feel so homey and peaceful.
