New York City Bagel & Coffee House Introduce
Introduction / Overview
When it comes to the quintessential New York breakfast, few things are as iconic as a hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagel. In the heart of Astoria, Queens, the New York City Bagel & Coffee House (often abbreviated by locals as NYCBCH) has established itself as a premier destination for this beloved staple. Located at 29-08 23rd Ave, this flagship location serves as the cornerstone of a local brand that has successfully expanded throughout the borough while maintaining its neighborhood charm. For Astoria residents and visitors alike, this spot is more than just a quick counter—it is a spacious, welcoming environment where the art of the bagel is treated with the respect it deserves.
The bakery distinguishes itself by its commitment to traditional methods, producing bagels that are notably larger than the average city fare, featuring the perfect "chew" and a golden, slightly crisp exterior. The atmosphere inside the 23rd Avenue shop is a blend of rustic industrial and cozy neighborhood café, with high ceilings, exposed brick, and plenty of wood accents. It is a place where you can find a solitary worker tucked away with a laptop on a Tuesday morning or a bustling crowd of families and friends enjoying a weekend brunch. By focusing on a "go above and beyond" service philosophy, the staff ensures that despite the high volume and frequent lines, every customer feels like a part of the Astoria community.
Location and Accessibility
The New York City Bagel & Coffee House is perfectly situated at 29-08 23rd Ave, Astoria, NY 11105, USA. This location is a strategic dream for commuters and local explorers. It is located just a short three-minute walk from the Ditmars Blvd subway station, which serves as the terminus for the N and W trains. For anyone getting off the subway and heading into the residential heart of Northern Astoria, it is an almost unavoidable—and highly recommended—stop. The bakery sits on the corner of 23rd Avenue and 29th Street, a vibrant intersection that captures the local energy of the neighborhood.
For those utilizing the bus, several MTA routes, including the Q69 and Q100, have stops within a couple of blocks, making it accessible from other parts of Queens. Pedestrian access is seamless, as the shop is located on a wide, walkable avenue filled with other local businesses. While street parking in this part of Astoria is famously competitive, the high turnover of the shop means that those with a bit of patience can often find a spot nearby. Additionally, the shop offers a spacious outdoor seating area that is a local favorite during the warmer months, providing a perfect vantage point for people-watching along one of Astoria’s most charming avenues.

What is worth choosing
If it is your first time visiting this Astoria landmark, the most essential item to choose is a classic Everything Bagel with your choice of house-made cream cheese. The "Everything" seasoning here is balanced and robust, and when paired with a spread like Scallion or their highly-regarded Tofu Veggie, it showcases exactly why this shop has a cult following. For those looking for something more substantial, the Garden Omelet—customized with bacon and peppers—is a recurring favorite among regulars who appreciate a hearty, protein-packed start to their day. It’s the kind of meal that makes you understand why this place becomes a "go-to spot" for anyone living within walking distance.
Another item worth choosing is their specialty breakfast sandwich on a Jalapeño Cheddar bagel. The spicy kick of the pepper combined with the melted cheese baked into the crust provides a flavor profile that stands out from standard NYC deli fare. For those with a sweet tooth, the Banana Pound Cake and the uniquely flavored smoothies (like the Butternut Squash option) offer a delightful departure from the savory menu. While the bagels and food receive near-universal acclaim, it is worth noting that coffee preferences can be subjective; some patrons find the house blend a bit bold, so if you prefer a smoother drink, opting for a latte or an iced cold brew might be the better way to go. No matter what you select, the combination of exceptional food and the "solid service" ensures that your visit to 23rd Avenue will be well worth the walk from the train.

I walked to five different places, and I finally found this gem. Not only did I have the garden omelet with added bacon and peppers, I also had a hot pumpkin spice coffee. I didn't even need any creamer. Okay, I did put three packets of sugar. But still! Customer service was superb. There are so many different options. If I lived in the area, this would be a go-to spot. If you're getting off the subway, check this place out. You will not regret it, I promise. Go above and beyond for your customers, and they will do the same!

New York City Bagel & Coffee House is a great spot with a couple of caveats. The bagels are truly exceptional — fresh, chewy, perfectly baked, and easily some of the best around. The service is consistently good too, with staff who are friendly and keep things moving smoothly even during busy hours. The only downside is the coffee. Unfortunately, it tastes burned and doesn’t match the quality of the food. If they improved that, the experience would be close to perfect. Overall, fantastic bagels and solid service make it worth a visit — just maybe skip the coffee.

Great service and amazing bagels. The staff member accepted my request for 2 cream cheese options on the same bagel. Unfortunately my order was slightly wrong but the staff member quickly made us a new one at no charge. We really enjoyed our last bagel in NYC - thanks for the memories. Highly recommend this busy store.

Delicious bagel sandwiches and pastries! I've been coming here for years (23rd Street Astoria). The service is uptight... definitely could be friendlier. They waste a lot of bags and napkins on orders that are to stay... please offer trays or plates for in house dining. Please turn up the heat... it is chilly inside! Otherwise this is my favorite bagel place in Queens. Two thumbs up!

Local bagel spot in the neighborhood that has so many different bagel an cream cheese options you might need a few mins to decide. I only took off 1 star because I order the same iced coffee with Hazelnut an the waitress that made it on Saturday the coffee was just how I liked it, but on Sunday a different person made it ans I had to asked 2 times for more hazelnut flavoring. Overall great breakfast bagel and coffee spot on the weekends. They do have outdoor seating an it's both kid friendly and pet friendly. They do have a water bowl for the dogs here. Best part is the bagels are always fresh, they're huge and if there is a line here it moves pretty fast. Snagging a table on a busy weekend can be a challenge too! I'll be back ❤️
