Amy's Bread

This was my first time ever at Amy’s bread and I’m so sad we came towards the end of the day! A lot of the bread and pastries were sold out, but I had no idea since there were so many other shops further closer to the entrance and this particular shop was towards the middle or back. Nevertheless, the gentleman working there was incredibly helpful and we ended up getting a blueberry coffee cake slice as well as some walnut bread slice that looked more like a hummingbird cake slice and two different breads that were simply delicious!! The gentleman actually said he was from Oakland, Oakland, California, so that was funny to me since I’m from the Bay Area also. Ambience in the store was very clean and rustic and if they weren’t closing so soon I would’ve stayed to enjoy my pastry, but we had just finished eating at the Japanese taco spot down the street or alleyway? So look for my review on that! I can’t wait to go back to Amy’s bread and try more of their actual loaves of breads, as well as their pastries!! - HapaKay Foodie

Amy's Bread Introduce

For New Yorkers who value the craft of traditional baking, Amy’s Bread has long been a cornerstone of the city’s culinary identity. Established in 1992, this woman-owned bakery helped pioneer the artisanal bread movement in the United States, bringing crusty, hand-shaped loaves back to the forefront of the urban diet. The location at 75 9th Avenue, nestled within the world-famous Chelsea Market, serves as a vital hub for locals in the Chelsea and Meatpacking districts. It is a place where the air is thick with the scent of yeast and toasted grains, offering a rustic escape from the high-tech energy of the surrounding neighborhood. Whether you are a resident picking up a daily baguette or a commuter looking for a reliable breakfast, Amy's Bread delivers a quintessentially New York experience rooted in quality and tradition.

The philosophy of Amy’s Bread is centered on slow fermentation and high-quality ingredients. Unlike mass-produced breads, every loaf here is handcrafted using traditional methods, resulting in complex flavors and superior textures. The bakery has earned its reputation not just through its bread, but through a wide array of sweets and pastries that remind patrons of home-style baking. In the fast-paced environment of Manhattan, this shop maintains a warm, inviting atmosphere characterized by a clean and rustic aesthetic. While it is a popular destination that can get busy, it remains a dedicated neighborhood resource for those who appreciate the difference that time and care make in the baking process. From the crunchy crust of their sourdough to the moist crumb of their cakes, every product reflects a commitment to the baker's art.

Location and Accessibility

Amy’s Bread is located at 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011, which puts it directly inside the historic Chelsea Market. This location is one of the most vibrant spots in the city, situated between 15th and 16th Streets. For locals, the shop is positioned toward the middle or back of the market concourse, making it a perfect destination after browsing the various other food stalls or visiting the nearby Google offices. Being inside the market means the bakery is protected from the elements, providing a comfortable year-round shopping environment for New York residents. However, because of its popularity, visitors should note that many of the most sought-after loaves and pastries can sell out toward the end of the day, so arriving earlier is often recommended for the best selection.

In terms of public transportation, the bakery is exceptionally accessible. It is just a short walk from the 14th Street / 8th Avenue subway station, which serves the A, C, E, and L lines. Additionally, it is close to the 14th Street station for the 1, 2, and 3 lines. For those who prefer the bus, several Manhattan routes, including the M11, M12, and M14, stop within a few blocks. The Chelsea Market building itself is fully ADA compliant, featuring street-level entrances and elevators, ensuring that Amy’s Bread is accessible to all members of the community, including those with strollers or mobility aids. What is worth choosing

When visiting Amy’s Bread, navigating the vast selection can be a delightful challenge. For those who enjoy a classic breakfast treat, the Blueberry Coffee Cake slice is a standout choice. It is frequently praised for its moist texture and rich fruit flavor, making it a favorite for both locals and tourists. Another exceptional option is the Walnut Bread, which features a dense, flavorful crumb that some customers compare to the richness of a hummingbird cake, but with the structural integrity of a traditional loaf. These items showcase the bakery's ability to balance sweetness with hearty, wholesome ingredients.

For the bread purist, the various sourdough loaves are the heart of the operation. The Semolina Bread with Golden Raisins and Fennel is a legendary choice that provides a sophisticated blend of sweet and savory notes, while the classic French Baguette remains a gold standard for its crisp crust and airy interior. If you are looking for a warm beverage to accompany your pastry, the hot chocolate is highly regarded for its rich and indulgent flavor profile. While the service environment can be fast-paced—typical of any high-traffic Manhattan location—the quality of the baked goods themselves rarely wavers. Choosing a mix of a signature sourdough loaf for home and a fresh pastry slice for the walk is the best way to experience the full spectrum of what Amy’s Bread has to offer to the New York community.

As a final tip for New Yorkers: because this location is a favorite for evening commuters, the shelves can look a bit thin by late afternoon. To truly appreciate the artistry of their full menu, try to visit during the morning or early lunch hours. Whether you are grabbing a quick snack or stocking up on artisanal staples, Amy’s Bread in Chelsea Market continues to be a shining example of the city’s vibrant baking culture, offering flavors that are simply delicious and deeply rooted in tradition.
