What is worth choosing
If it is your first time visiting Ole & Steen on Lexington Avenue, the sheer variety of golden-brown crusts and intricate pastries might feel overwhelming. However, there are a few standout items that have earned a loyal following among Upper East Side locals. The "Chocolate Social" is arguably the most recommended treat. It is a masterful take on a chocolate babka, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and texture that makes it ideal for sharing—or enjoying all by yourself.
For those who lean toward the savory side or are looking for a staple to take home, the seeded rye bread is an absolute must. Unlike standard supermarket bread, this rye is dense and packed with seeds, offering a complex flavor that pairs beautifully with simple butter or smoked fish. If you are looking for a cozy beverage, their hot chocolate is described as silky and rich, providing the ultimate comfort on a brisk New York morning. While the carrot cake muffins are a visible option, many regulars suggest sticking to the yeasted breads and traditional Danish "Socials" to truly experience what this bakery does best. Whether you are looking for a chewy rye bite or a crisp pastry, the guidance of the staff can help you find exactly what your palate is craving.

🥖 Our Daily Brød on Lexington 🍞 A new favorite on the Upper East Side - Ole & Steen near 87th St. I stopped in for a seeded rye loaf (dense, nutty, and full of flavor) and couldn’t resist their rye-based cookies and bites. Everything here feels both wholesome and indulgent. A big shout-out to Jeffrey, the soft-spoken and wonderfully knowledgeable server who guided me through the choices - explaining textures (“this one’s chewy, that one’s crisp”) and ingredients with such care. I am not celiac but I’m someone who digests rye and spelt better than wheat, so I truly appreciated the insight. Paired my finds with a silky hot chocolate and a quiet seat by the window - the perfect mid-morning ritual. #OleAndSteen #NYCBakery #RyeBreadLove #UpperEastSideEats #OurDailyBrød #SlowFoodMoments

Ole & Steen is a charming boutique coffee shop notable for its mid-century modern aesthetic, which contributes to a sophisticated atmosphere. We initially sampled the carrot cake muffin. While the cream cheese topping was excellent, the muffin itself was somewhat dry and lacked flavor. Although I understand a muffin may differ from a slice of carrot cake, I believe there is room for improvement in this item. Noticing a popular item on the menu, I decided to try the "Chocolate Social," a semi-sweet chocolate babka. It features layers of twisted bread infused with chocolate, both within the dough and on the top, resulting in a very enjoyable treat. I highly recommend this item for anyone visiting. Additionally, their coffee was fresh, with a bold, rich flavor and a smooth, non-bitter profile. The establishment was clean, and the staff was friendly. I would recommend giving this place a try at least once.

What a beautiful place this is in the bustling city, a place to just chill and enjoy a hot chocolate or a coffee, and so much to eat as well, the staff so ever ready and helpful, this surely is a regular go to spot.

I stopped by this café on a weekday afternoon while passing through the area and decided to check it out randomly. I wanted an iced drip coffee but was told they only offered cold brew on ice, so I went with an iced matcha and a brownie instead. The space is spacious and comfortable, with just the right amount of air conditioning—perfect to cool off from the heat. The drinks felt a bit pricey, but the taste was decent. However, I was really put off when a staff member started wiping tables with a strong bleach smell right next to where I was eating by the window. It was hard to enjoy my food with that lingering smell. I don’t understand why they’d clean right by customers who are eating. Because of this, I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to come back next time.

Consistently good coffee - - plus a nice array of granola / yogurt / berry refreshments. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was somewhat diluted when the trash is left to its own devices.
