Ole & Steen Introduce
For those navigating the architectural canyons of Midtown Manhattan, the arrival of Ole & Steen has introduced a sophisticated slice of Scandinavian culture to the New York region. Known in its native Denmark as Lagkagehuset, this acclaimed bakery has brought its "hygge" philosophy—a sense of comfort and cozy conviviality—to the doorstep of Bryant Park. For local New Yorkers, Ole & Steen serves as more than just a quick stop for caffeine; it is a refined retreat where the minimalist design of Northern Europe meets the high-energy demands of the American metropolis. Whether you are looking for a professional space for a morning meeting or a peaceful corner to enjoy a pastry, this establishment has quickly become a cornerstone of the Midtown cafe scene.
The experience at Ole & Steen is defined by a commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and a distinct aesthetic that is "super chic." The Danes have a global reputation for design, and this is immediately apparent in the shop’s layout, which manages to feel both modern and incredibly inviting. For regular patrons who may have visited their famous London outlets, the New York location offers a familiar sense of high-end quality but with the added benefit of an iconic Manhattan backdrop. It is a space where "fantastic vibes" are paired with a culinary menu that goes far beyond the standard bakery fare, offering everything from slow-fermented breads to meticulously constructed sandwiches and world-famous pastries.
Location and Accessibility
Ole & Steen is perfectly situated at 80 W 40th St, New York, NY 10018, USA. This prime real estate places it directly along the southern edge of Bryant Park, making it one of the most accessible and scenic bakery locations in all of Manhattan. For the local office crowd at the surrounding towers, such as the Salesforce Tower or the Bank of America Tower, it provides a convenient and upscale alternative to standard chain cafes. The location is a strategic hub for anyone working in the Garment District or the Midtown business corridor.
Accessibility via public transportation is unparalleled. The bakery is just steps away from the 42nd St–Bryant Park subway station, serving the B, D, F, M, and 7 lines. Additionally, it is within a short walking distance of Grand Central Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal, making it an easy destination for commuters. One of the standout physical features of this location is the seating arrangement. Unlike many cramped Manhattan coffee shops, the seating here is "super comfy and well spread," allowing patrons to actually find a place to sit and relax even during the busy midday hours. The large windows provide a fantastic view of the Bryant Park greenery, creating a tranquil atmosphere that is "too nice for a coffee break."

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Ole & Steen, there are a few items that have achieved legendary status and are considered essential for the full experience. The "Maple Pecan Social" is perhaps the most recommended item on the menu. This braided pastry is known for its delicate layers, rich maple flavor, and the perfect crunch of pecans. For many regulars, pairing a slice of the Maple Pecan Social with a expertly pulled Cortado is the "good combo" that makes a visit truly worthwhile. The pastry is notably balanced—sweet enough to be a treat but with a complexity of flavor that highlights the quality of the Danish dough.
On the savory side, the sandwiches are a standout and shouldn't be overlooked. Local patrons often remark that the sandwiches are "deeelicious," specifically praising the texture of the bread and the freshness of the ingredients. Choosing a sandwich made on their dark rye bread provides an authentic taste of Denmark that is both healthy and incredibly satisfying. The rye bread at Ole & Steen is dense, nutty, and serves as the perfect base for their Scandinavian-inspired fillings.
Finally, for those who appreciate the finer details of a cafe experience, the coffee program itself is worth choosing. The baristas are skilled in traditional espresso techniques, ensuring that every latte or flat white is served at the correct temperature with smooth, micro-foam milk. Whether you are stopping in for a quick takeaway or settling into the "super comfy" seating for an hour-long retreat, choosing one of their signature Socials and a specialty coffee will remind you why this spot has successfully integrated itself into the "regular rotation" for so many New Yorkers. The combination of the chic environment, the Bryant Park location, and the uncompromising quality of the baked goods makes Ole & Steen a premier destination in Midtown Manhattan.
In a city that never stops moving, Ole & Steen provides a necessary pause. It is a place where the Danish concept of quality life is baked into every loaf and poured into every cup. For anyone in the New York region looking for a high-end bakery experience that balances style with substance, the 40th Street location is a highly recommended stop that is sure to become a favorite part of your weekly routine.

Seriously, the Danes absolutely nailed the whole minimalist setup here—it's super chic and has fantastic vibes…but hold up, real talk: their sandwiches are deeeelicious. This spot is 100% going into the regular rotation. What a treat. Go check it out! Highly recommend. 👏🏻

Just too nice for a coffee break. I am a regular at their london outlets. But the location along bryant park makes a difference. The seating is super comfy and well spread. My Cortado and the Maple Pecan Social is a good combo!

Finally I found the best hot chocolate in New York City! The place is conveniently located. There are just a fee tables to sit inside, better to take out and go in the park. I will definitely come by again as a local. The guys work best till the very end of the shift! Respect for that! See you later on. Personal “thank you” for your barista Luisana! Very warm and kind person!

The pastries are quite good, but the service experience could be improved. Staffing seems very limited, with only one person handling both the register and food service, which makes things slow during busy times. There is also no restroom available; when I asked, I was told it has been out of order for over two weeks. The staff did not seem very welcoming, but it was understandable given how overwhelmed they were while trying to serve a large crowd during peak hours. Management should pay closer attention to this location and provide better support for the team.

Very underwhelming. Large coffees were not large. Mocha was not mocha-ey. Restrooms unavailable. Danish was tasty, so happy about that. Wish we had continued on down the street for another bakery/coffee shop.
