Épicerie Boulud Introduce
For those navigating the fast-paced corridors of Midtown Manhattan, the intersection of history and modern luxury is found right at the base of one of the city’s newest architectural marvels. Épicerie Boulud, located on the ground floor of the prestigious One Vanderbilt building, serves as a refined gateway to French culinary tradition. For the local New Yorker moving through the 10017 area, this establishment is more than just a convenience stop; it is an eat-in and take-out boutique that brings the high standards of Michelin-starred Chef Daniel Boulud to the daily commuter and the neighborhood resident alike. In a city where "French-style" can sometimes feel like a marketing term, Épicerie Boulud stands as an authentic outpost of Parisian sensibility right in the heart of the New York region.
The atmosphere at this One Vanderbilt location is distinctly chic and professional, designed to cater to the high-end clientele of the surrounding financial and legal firms while remaining accessible to those stepping off a Metro-North train. While the space is an "outlet" format, it maintains a level of elegance that distinguishes it from standard transit-hub cafes. It is a place where a simple "let’s stop for an orange juice" moment can easily transform into a full sensory exploration of artisanal sweets. For locals, it provides a sophisticated backdrop for a quick business talk or a restorative solo break, offering a quiet moment of indulgence amidst the sprawling energy of the Grand Central terminal district.
Location and Accessibility
Épicerie Boulud is located at 1 Vanderbilt Ave, first floor, New York, NY 10017, USA. This location is arguably one of the most strategic in the city, situated directly adjacent to Grand Central Terminal. For New York commuters, this means unparalleled accessibility; you can transition from the subway platforms or the Metro-North gates into a luxury French bakery environment within minutes. The entrance on the ground floor of One Vanderbilt puts it in the direct path of thousands of professionals and visitors who traverse the Vanderbilt Avenue corridor daily.
Accessibility is further enhanced by its proximity to the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S subway lines, as well as the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) at Grand Central Madison. While the indoor seating is noted by regular patrons as being somewhat limited, the shop’s design maximizes its footprint for efficiency. For those working in the skyscraper itself or the nearby Chrysler Building and MetLife Building, it is a primary destination for a high-quality takeaway breakfast or a mid-afternoon sugar boost. The layout allows for quick "in-and-out" service, which is essential for the Midtown professional, though the environment also encourages a brief pause to enjoy the architectural views of the neighborhood.

What is Worth Choosing
When visiting Épicerie Boulud at One Vanderbilt, the absolute standout choice is the macaron selection. While the city has many French-inspired outlets, the mango macaron at this location has earned a reputation for being "absolutely delicious." It captures the vibrant, tropical essence of the fruit while maintaining the delicate, airy crunch that characterizes a world-class macaron. It is highly recommended to try a variety of flavors, as the shop often features seasonal rotations that showcase the kitchen's creativity. For those who enjoy a visual experience with their food, the colorful display of these sweets is a fun and inviting highlight of the shop.
For a refreshing and high-quality beverage choice, their fresh orange juice is a reliable and superior option compared to standard cafe fare. It serves as an excellent palate cleanser before diving into the sweeter pastry options. If you are looking for a classic morning pairing, the croissants and pain au chocolat are staples that reflect the traditional French techniques Chef Boulud is known for. While the prices are on the "more expensive side," the cost reflects the premium location and the quality of the artisanal ingredients used in every batch.
If you have a few moments to spare, it is worth choosing to sit at one of the limited indoor tables. This allows you to fully appreciate the "people-watching" aspect of the Vanderbilt building. Watching the mix of international travelers and Manhattan’s elite move through the lobby adds a unique New York energy to your coffee or tea break. For the local professional, choosing a box of assorted macarons from this location is also a high-value move for an afternoon office treat or a sophisticated "thank you" gift for a colleague. Whether you are there for a quick juice or a deep dive into every macaron flavor available, Épicerie Boulud provides a touch of class that makes the Midtown hustle feel just a little more elegant.
Ultimately, Épicerie Boulud at One Vanderbilt is a destination for the discerning New Yorker who values quality and convenience. It successfully bridges the gap between a high-end French pâtisserie and a bustling transit-hub cafe. By focusing on signature items like their macarons and maintaining an atmosphere of refined luxury, it has become an essential part of the 10017 culinary landscape. Next time you find yourself near Grand Central with a craving for something sweet, stepping into this Vanderbilt Avenue gem is a decision your taste buds will certainly appreciate.

A little bakery-food-tea/coffee outlet on the ground floor of Vanderbilt building. A touch on the more expensive side and limited menu. Limited seating inside. Tea was ok, and pastry wasn't as good as some of the Korean French bakeries the city, but it is convenient beside Grand Central.

This was one of those “let’s stop for an orange juice” moments that quickly turned into trying every macaron flavour 😄. Such a fun spot for people‑watching while enjoying sweet treats 🍬. And just a heads‑up the mango macaron was absolutely delicious 🥭💛.

Excellent quality, though pricey I stopped at Épicerie Boulud in July 2025 to grab a quick bite before a meeting in the same building. I got a grilled chicken sandwich on ciabattawith sun-dried tomatoes, arugula, and goat cheese. They warmed it up, and it turned out to be delicious - the ciabatta was fresh, the filling generous, and it had a satisfying amount of goat cheese. It cost $15 with tax, but it was worth it. I’d definitely come again.

Sometimes a name is just a name. Huge disappointment. The baguette on the ham and cheese sandwich was not crispy and too chewy like it was sitting in the display refrigerator. I will never order from here again and this should be an embarrassment to the chef. I expected passion and quality control. What I got was a sandwich worthy of a chain restaurant.

Pain au raisins pastry was good. Crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Their sandwiches looked simple and tasty. The regular coffee was not great tasting a bit burnt and lacking a deep flavor profile.
