Riverdale Bagels Introduce
For over three decades, Riverdale Bagels has stood as a bastion of traditional New York baking at 5650 Riverdale Avenue. Founded in 1992 by the Tardinuovo family, this local landmark has earned a reputation that extends far beyond the borders of the Bronx. Recognized by major food publications like Eater NY as one of the most iconic bagel shops in all of New York City, it remains a family-owned and operated institution. While the neighborhood has evolved, Riverdale Bagels has stayed true to the fundamentals that define a real New York bagel: hand-rolling the dough, boiling before baking, and ensuring a perfect contrast between a crusty exterior and a chewy, airy interior. For the residents of the northwest Bronx, this isn't just a place to get breakfast; it is a community anchor where three generations of families have gathered to start their day.
The shop itself is an unpretentious, "old-school" New York deli. It is a small, narrow storefront that prioritizes the production of high-quality baked goods over modern lounge seating. Stepping inside, customers are greeted by the warmth of the ovens and the sight of fresh bagels being unloaded from the racks. The atmosphere is frequently bustling, especially during the early morning rush when local regulars and "commuter-athletes" pop in for their daily fix. Despite its fame, the shop maintains a neighborhood feel, where the staff often knows the "usual" orders of the people living in the surrounding apartment blocks. For many New Yorkers, the lack of frills is part of the charm—it is a functional, efficient space dedicated entirely to the craft of the bagel.
Location and Accessibility:
Riverdale Bagels is strategically located at 5650 Riverdale Ave, Bronx, NY 10471, USA. It sits on a prominent stretch of Riverdale Avenue, making it a convenient stop for those living in the North Riverdale and Yonkers border areas. For those traveling by car, there is typically ample free parking available in the shopping center directly across the street, which is a significant advantage in a city where parking is often a deterrent. Public transit users are also well-served; several Bronx bus lines, including the Bx7 and Bx10, have stops nearby, and the shop is a popular waypoint for those heading toward the Henry Hudson Parkway. While the interior is small and does not offer tables for sitting, its "in-and-out" efficiency makes it a perfect destination for those on their way to work, school, or weekend sporting events.

- Transit-friendly location with easy access to major Bronx thoroughfares and plenty of nearby parking.

What is worth choosing:
When visiting Riverdale Bagels, the first thing any newcomer should try is a classic "Everything" or "Plain" bagel to truly appreciate the craftsmanship of the dough. Because they are boiled, the crust has a distinct snap that gives way to a dense, satisfying chew. For those who enjoy a bit of flavor innovation, the cream cheese selection is where this shop truly shines. While the Scallion and Vegetable spreads are excellent, the Garlic Pepper and the Olive Pimento cream cheeses are local favorites that provide a savory depth you won't find at a standard chain. If you are looking for a hearty start to your day, the breakfast sandwiches are a top-tier choice—specifically a toasted Everything bagel with egg, cheese, and your choice of protein. The heat from the eggs often melts the cream cheese slightly, creating a decadent and delicious "toasty" experience that has become a staple for regulars.
For those who prefer something smaller or are watching their portions, the Mini Bagels are highly regarded for maintaining the same high quality and texture as their full-sized counterparts. They are particularly popular for children or as a light snack. Additionally, don't overlook the tea options; while coffee is the standard New York morning fuel, the shop offers a surprisingly good selection of teas that can be seen displayed behind the counter. Finally, if you are visiting for the first time, keep an eye on the line—it often moves quickly thanks to an efficient staff, but the "regular" crowd can be thick on weekend mornings. Being prepared with your order and understanding the "fast-paced" nature of the shop will ensure you get the most out of your visit to this Bronx icon. Would you like me to help you find the current seasonal cream cheese flavors or check the best times to avoid the weekend morning rush?

I have come here before and always had the same problem with service. They pick and choose who they want to serve will make you wait if they dislike you in anyway. Will find other things to do before acknowledging that you as a customer are there or haven’t placed an order yet. Management should train the staff better. I’m not walking in asking for anything free. It’s crazy to pay $3 for a small coffee that isn’t even worth it. But still for convenience and near my home. Definitely the last time me and my family come here. Only 1 customer besides myself at 6:45am. The best bagel in the Bronx is the Bagel Corner still in riverdale, 581 w 235 street, they are always great, busy but will always acknowledge you as a customer and provide the greeting and service I never got at this location the last couple months.

First time trying this spot out. Picked up a dozed bagels for a teenage sports team. Ordered plain and everything bagels with cream cheese. While I waited, there was a consistent line of what seemed to be regulars popping in to get their usual orders. The staff were efficient and courteous and got my order ready pretty quickly. I ordered a mini plain cream cheese bagel for myself to try out. I ended up eating the bagel on the way to the game. The cream cheese had partly melted on the bagel, which was toasty and delicious. I'm gonna go back and try a breakfast sandwich soon. This is a very small store, not tables to sit at, good choice of cream cheeses. They also had some good tea options that I could see on the back wall behind the counter.

The bagels are on point but the customer service was a complete miss. We came in 40min before they closed. We were patient as one person ahead of us completed their order. It took another 10min to be acknowledged and when we asked for additions to our bagel were told the grill was turned off. I’ve worked in food service. To have the grill off ten minutes before close is reasonable but 40min?! It was clear they didn’t want to service us. Despite the hype, I would avoid this spot.

Great nook for all your bagel cravings! Great quality of in-house made bagels--toasted or not, makes an amazing compliment of flavors of cream cheese (spicy red cherry peppers are my fav!!). Their breaky sandwiches are great, as well! Small nook that delivers a powerful punch!! Highly recommend this place!

Among the best in the 5 boroughs (the only Bronx bagelry ranked on Eater's 22 Best Bagel Joints in NYC. See photo.) The bagels are crisp on the outside, chewy inside and big. Spreads are appropriately generous making a perfect meal which I partake in almost any time of the day! It is a small store, no seating, no frills. Just great bagels and spreads and a few other items like Bev's, cookies and chips to go. Also, ample free parking in shopping center across the street.
