What is worth choosing
When visiting Gruenebaum Bakeries, there are several standout items that have earned a reputation among the locals. The absolute must-try item is their signature rye bread. Customers have raved for years about its freshness and authenticity, noting that it stands out even in a city as competitive as New York. Whether you prefer the crunch of seeds or a smooth finish, this bread is a staple of the Gruenebaum experience and is often cited as the primary reason for a return visit. It is the kind of bread that pairs perfectly with deli meats or simply a spread of fresh butter.
Another highlight worth choosing is the cheese danish. Described by regulars as "fabulous," these pastries strike a balance between flaky dough and a rich, creamy filling. They represent the classic New York pastry experience that is becoming harder to find in its traditional form. For those observing traditional customs or simply looking for a high-quality loaf for a family dinner, the fresh-baked challah is a top-tier choice. The braids are consistent, and the bread maintains a soft, airy interior that is characteristic of expert baking. While some customers note that the pricing reflects a premium artisanal level, the consensus among fans is that the specific quality of these traditional items—from the bagels to the specialty cakes—makes it a worthwhile investment for a true taste of the Bronx. If you find yourself in Riverdale, stopping in for a loaf of rye or a morning roll is a quintessential neighborhood experience that connects you to the culinary history of the borough.
It is important for new customers to note that experiences at local institutions can vary. While many celebrate the long history and the quality of the bread, some patrons have occasionally pointed out the need for consistent communication between the kitchen and the front of the house to ensure the smoothest service possible. However, for the majority of the Riverdale community, the draw of fresh, traditional Jewish baked goods remains the primary reason this bakery has stayed in business for so many years. The combination of old-school recipes and a familiar neighborhood face keeps Gruenebaum Bakeries on the map for anyone seeking an authentic New York bakery experience.

Gruenebaum Bakeries Reviews

🚨 Bakery Review / Public Notice 🚨 This bakery seriously needs to be shut down. The service was poor, staff were unprofessional, and the biggest issue—the bread was NOT fresh. It was hard, stale, and clearly not made that day, which is unacceptable for any bakery. Customers expect fresh baked goods and basic respect. Unfortunately, this place delivers neither. I would not recommend this bakery to anyone until major changes are made. The lack of communication between the back of the store “kitchen” part and the front is so bad I found myself running back and forth several times. Quality matters. Service matters. This place failed on both.

Cheese danish also fabulous, and all other pastries, cakes ,rolls, and bagels! It’s a Jewish bakery they made fresh baked challah.Very pricey but still my favorite bakery in Riverdale!

I mean, how can i put it? The worst bread I've had. Old and stale, with a hint of mold, which is the only thing i could taste, finished with a smell of dust. It went straight to the garbage, cuz my pup spat it out. Wow! Overpriced. One extra star for cookie sticks. That was okay, but doesn't worth $3

Gruenebaum’s Bakery in Riverdale has the best Glatt Kosher desserts and exceptional Challah’s. I love stopping there at 7am in route to work on Friday mornings when they are already open for business. They have the best Kichel and other delicious Jewish specialties that can bring tears of joy to your eyes when you get to experience their fresh baked items.

This place is high priced. The bakery cakes taste greasy. The restaurant part in the back makes decent food but closes way too early. Any place that closes at 2PM or earlier in my point of view isn't worth taking seriously. I don't usually feel like eating out until at least the mid afternoon.
