Somedays Bakery - Astoria Introduce
In the rapidly evolving culinary landscape where Astoria meets Long Island City, Somedays Bakery has emerged as a destination for those who appreciate the intersection of traditional technique and modern, experimental pastry design. New York City is a town defined by its bakeries, and in the borough of Queens, the competition for the perfect crumb is particularly fierce. Somedays Bakery - Astoria positioned itself as a contemporary player in this scene, offering a menu that leans heavily into high-end viennoiserie and creative seasonal treats. For the local New Yorker, this shop represents a specific niche: the artisanal boutique bakery where the aesthetics of the food are as much a part of the experience as the flavor itself.
The vibe of Somedays Bakery reflects the changing face of 30th Avenue, blending a sleek, minimalist aesthetic with the high-energy pulse of the neighborhood. It is a place designed for the modern commuter and the weekend brunch seeker alike. In a city where time is the most precious commodity, a bakery must offer something truly distinctive to stand out. Somedays attempts to do this through bold concepts and a focus on the technical mastery of laminated dough. While the neighborhood boasts many old-school Italian and Greek establishments, Somedays caters to a crowd looking for the "next big thing" in the world of flour, butter, and sugar. It is a spot that invites conversation, whether about the intricacy of their pastry folds or the unique flavor combinations found in their savory rotations.
Location and Accessibility are two of the strongest attributes of Somedays Bakery. Situated at 23-37 30th Ave., Long Island City, NY 11102, USA, the bakery is strategically placed at a crossroads of residential life and transit. For locals living in the western part of Astoria or the northern reaches of Long Island City, the bakery serves as a super convenient stop. It is positioned along the vibrant 30th Avenue corridor, a street famous for its density of cafes, bars, and restaurants. This makes it an easy addition to a morning routine or a weekend walk through the neighborhood.
For those coming from further away, the bakery is highly accessible via public transportation, which is the lifeblood of any New York City business. The N and W subway lines at the 30th Avenue station are just a few blocks away, making it a viable destination for anyone traveling through Queens. Additionally, the Q102 and Q18 bus lines serve the immediate vicinity, providing several options for those who prefer surface transit. The area is exceptionally pedestrian-friendly, with wide sidewalks and a high volume of foot traffic. While street parking in this part of Queens is notoriously difficult—as any local driver can attest—the bakery’s proximity to major residential hubs means that most of its patrons arrive on foot, contributing to the intimate, community-focused feel of the storefront.
Services Offered at Somedays Bakery focus on a premium café experience, prioritizing the quality of their artisanal bakes alongside a curated beverage program. The bakery operates as a specialized pastry shop where the focus is on daily-fresh production. The services include:
- Daily production of artisanal viennoiserie, specializing in high-butter content laminated doughs such as croissants and danishes.
- A creative savory pastry program that features experimental combinations, such as their spinach pinwheels and corn-based seasonal specialties.
- Specialized cookie baking, including indulgent options like their signature S’mores cookies that blend nostalgic flavors with professional execution.
- A full-service coffee bar providing standard espresso-based drinks, lattes, and drip coffee to accompany their sweet and savory selections.
- Seasonal menu rotations that introduce new concepts based on available ingredients and current culinary trends in the New York pastry scene.
- Summer exclusive treats, which have historically included soft-serve ice cream, providing a refreshing alternative for the warmer months in the city.
- A "grab-and-go" retail environment designed for efficiency, perfect for the busy New York lifestyle.
Features and Highlights of Somedays Bakery distinguish it from the more traditional shops in the area. The bakery is characterized by its commitment to bold, often adventurous pastry concepts. Highlights of visiting this location include:
- The Butteriest Croissants: The bakery has gained a reputation for the sheer richness of its dough, with many customers noting the exceptional flakiness and buttery profile of their classic French-style items.
- Innovative Pastry Concepts: Instead of sticking strictly to the classics, the bakery frequently experiments with "fun" concepts and unique shapes, appealing to foodies looking for a modern twist on traditional bakes.
- Prime Neighborhood Positioning: Its location on 30th Avenue makes it a quintessential "neighborhood spot," convenient for locals and a great starting point for exploring the rest of Astoria.
- Clean and Contemporary Aesthetic: The shop features a modern design that aligns with the premium nature of its products, making it a visually appealing stop for a morning coffee.
- Technical Lamination: The highlight for many is the technical execution of the Pain Au Chocolat, which is often cited as a benchmark for quality in the local area.
- Seasonal Versatility: The ability to pivot from heavy winter pastries to summer soft-serve shows a versatility that keeps the menu feeling fresh throughout the year.

What is worth choosing when you visit Somedays Bakery? If there is one item that stands above the rest, it is undoubtedly the Pain Au Chocolat. It is widely considered the crown jewel of their menu—described by regulars as the butteriest, flakiest, and most delicious version you are likely to find in the city. The technical precision required to get the perfect "honeycomb" interior while maintaining a crisp, golden exterior is on full display here. It is best enjoyed early in the morning when the pastries are at their peak freshness.
For those who prefer something a bit more playful, the S’mores cookies are a solid choice, offering a chewy and rich experience that pairs excellently with a hot espresso. However, it is worth noting that Somedays is a place for the discerning eater who doesn't mind paying a premium for artisanal labor. While some of the more experimental savory items, like the corn pastries or spinach pinwheels, can be adventurous and fun concepts, the true value lies in their classic French-inspired bakes. If you are looking for a high-quality, indulgent croissant that justifies its place in the New York bakery pantheon, the classic Pain Au Chocolat is the clear winner. In a neighborhood with no shortage of options, choosing the items where the bakery's technical skill shines most—specifically their laminated doughs—is the best way to experience what Somedays has to offer.
Ultimately, Somedays Bakery - Astoria serves as a modern touchpoint in the Queens bakery scene. It provides a convenient, stylish, and high-quality option for those on the border of Astoria and LIC. While it embraces a higher price point reflective of its artisanal approach, the dedication to creating a truly buttery and flaky croissant makes it a worthwhile stop for any pastry enthusiast in New York. Whether you are there for the summer soft-serve or a winter morning treat, it remains a notable part of the 30th Avenue experience.

Bummed about this place because it’s in a super convenient spot for me. The pastries really don’t justify the price which is a shame, the concepts are fun but the execution really isn’t there for me. I got a corn pastry that was $13 and just okay- on me for not checking but definitely doesn’t have me in a rush to try again. The photo is of a spinach pinwheel which was fine but pretty dry. I don’t mind paying for quality and exciting food but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. There are other better places around for coffee as well. They had soft serve last summer which I might go back for honestly.

Pain Au Chocolate is what you need to know! Here you will find the butteriest, flakiest, most delicious pain au chocolate you will ever try. We had it early in the morning and everything about was great. We also had their S’mores cookies and they were good, but the croissant makes everything else taste questionable.

LOVE this placeee! they have the coolest combinations of flavors to choose from on top of classic pastries with a little twist. everything looked so delicious. we got a hazelnut chocolate pastry and pistachio and raspberry one. the pistachio was on another level! and they were so nice! they even let us try their seasonal hot chocolate soft serve and we ended getting that too! really yummy

Okay. First, the pastries are pretty darn tasty. The pistachio and raspberry lattice is very, very good. I would even wager it's good enough to warrant the steep price. The pain au chocolat was fine, the black sesame and tahini croissant was okay. Maybe I should have opted for a plain or savory item because, while I was good with them, I wasn't blown away. I also think they are not for everyday consumption because the prices are higher than many bakeries in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Again, it was good, and the service was good, but I wasn't wowed... Continuing the quest for the best chocolate chip cookie, I got one. Again, it was good. Like everything, it's fine, but I don't think I would go out of my way to get these pastries again.

Visited Somedays Bakery during my recent trip to NY and was blown away with how fresh and flaky the pretzel pastry was. The selection to choose from was wonderful and we took our treats down to the waterfront to enjoy with a view. Would definitely recommend checking this place out!
