What is worth choosing
When you find yourself at the Bread Alone stand, there are a few items that have achieved legendary status among the local regulars. The Pecan Sticky Bun is an absolute must-try. At just $5, it is a masterclass in balance—buttery, fresh, and soft, with a level of stickiness that delivers deep caramel flavor without being overly cloying. While the texture can occasionally vary from soft and pillowy to a more robust, "jaw-testing" chew, the flavor is consistently exceptional. It is a favorite morning treat for those who want a sweet start to their day in the city.
Another "lovely surprise" for many visitors is their chocolate cake. Often discovered by chance at local street fairs or at their primary stand, this cake has gained a reputation for being the perfect dessert. It is famously moist, fluffy, and sweet without being overwhelming, leading many customers to buy a slice and immediately return for two more to take home. For those looking for something savory, you cannot go wrong with their classic sourdough loaves. The crust-to-crumb ratio is expertly managed, making it the ideal base for an avocado toast or a accompaniment to a hearty soup. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a 10-year veteran of the Greenmarket, Bread Alone at Union Square offers a reliable, delicious, and ethically-minded experience that stands as a highlight of the New York bakery landscape.
Ultimately, choosing Bread Alone is a vote for the future of food. In a city where options are endless, the combination of organic integrity, carbon-neutral operations, and world-class baking skill makes this Union Square landmark a true standout. Whether you are there for the "moist and fluffy" chocolate cake or the "buttery and fresh" sticky buns, you are participating in a tradition of excellence that has defined New York's organic food scene for over 40 years. Don't miss the chance to grab a slice—or three—the next time you are strolling through the square.

I like the Pecan Sticky Bun. First time hook me up haha, second time was kinda hard? But my jaw make it through. Today third time was so delicious; it was buttery, fresh, soft and the stickiness didn’t stuck in my teeth 🤣 The flavor is always there is just the texture that I gamble it for. Overall, I like it a lot $5

This one was such a lovely surprise! I was strolling through a street fair in NYC, browsing handmade crafts and food stands, when I spotted a slice of chocolate cake that looked way too good to ignore. And let me tell you, I was SO right. Moist, fluffy, sweet but not too sweet, it was perfect. I bought one slice… then went back and got two more to take home 😂 Now I’m back home and dreaming of that cake. I need the recipe. I’m honestly counting the days until I can go back to NYC and you guys are one of the reasons!!

4/10/2023, Monday: - Bread Alone Bakery comes to this Union Square Greenmarket on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8am-4pm, and is located by 17th st and Broadway or 15th street and Union Square West. There is a selection of many sourdough organic breads, and baked goods and pastries. I like the whole grain sourdough breads such as the Pumpernickel base on whole grain dark rye, which you can buy loose, and the Rye Brod 100% whole grain Rye even though I prefer it without a bag, so I can take it with my own stainless steel container and linen tote bag. For the baked goods the vegan chocolate spelt pound cake is based on organic spelt which is a whole grain.

Bread Alone is one of the many stands at Union Square Greenmarket and is well worth a visit. the small tent offers a variety of bakery items from different breads to muffins to pastries and more. strolled through the Greenmarket, recently, and picked up a Chocolate Walnut Cookie and let me tell this is one damn good cookie. a crumbly cookie with chunks of chocolate and walnut pieces…a great mix of cookie textures. the cookie is the right amount of sweetness and crunch. the bakery lives up to its no-nonsense reputation of sustainable methods and organic-certified ingredients to create simple yet great baked goods. even on a chilly February afternoon, the staff seemed pretty chipper. definitely check out their schedule on the Greenmarket schedule and stop by.

Honestly an extremely underrated spot! One of the best pastry spots in Manhattan. I recommend the Lemon Currant Scone & if you want something more sweet the Pecan Sticky Bun is great!
