What is Worth Choosing
When it comes to selecting the best items at Francesca's Bakery, the banana bread is an absolute must-try and arguably their most famous offering among the Union Square regulars. It strikes a rare and perfect balance—it is sweet and comforting without being overwhelming or cloying. The addition of walnuts provides a robust texture that elevates the delicate crumb of the bread. One of its most impressive qualities, often highlighted by local fans, is its ability to stay moist. Even after being stored in the fridge for 24 hours, the bread retains its freshness, making it a great choice for those who want to enjoy their treat over several days or share it with others later on.
For those who appreciate traditional Jewish-style baked goods that have become a New York staple, the chocolate babka is another item worth your attention. It is visually stunning, with a glossy, egg-washed crust and numerous layers filled with a rich chocolate spread. While some find it to be on the slightly drier side compared to the banana bread, it is a classic accompaniment to a hot cup of coffee from a nearby street vendor. It represents the authentic, rustic style of baking that defines the Greenmarket experience.
Choosing Francesca's Bakery means choosing a piece of the New York community. Their items aren't just food; they are part of a weekly ritual for many who live and work in the 10003 zip code and beyond. The combination of generous portions, fair pricing, and high-quality ingredients makes it stand out against more commercialized competitors. Whether you are a fan of nutty, moist fruit breads or layered, chocolatey loaves, this bakery provides a reliable and high-quality option right in the heart of the city.
The bakery is a testament to the fact that you don't need a fancy storefront to provide world-class quality. By focusing on the essentials—moisture, flavor, and texture—Francesca's Bakery has ensured its place as a favorite for anyone who knows where to look in Union Square. The next time you find yourself near the park, keep an eye out for their table; it is an experience that truly captures the local flavor of Manhattan.

I like the banana bread a lot; is sweet but not overwhelming delicate- and the walnuts give a good add to it. The most interesting thing is, even after one day in the fridge (all wrapped up) is moist the next day and I can enjoy this for more of one day. I shared with my coworkers and they liked it too even better than a expensive bakery by quality, amount and price :) I enjoyed it every weekend like a day routine.

Walked past it the other day, and saw they got one last chocolate babka on the table so I got it. It looks very nice. The surface is very smooth, and I believe it was egg washed. The inside has many layers with chocolate spread all over. However, it was a bit on the dry side. I’d like to try their other items next time.

I'd recommend the blueberry corn bread, and the fruit tarts, and there are an assortment of other baked goods at Francesca's Bakery at the Union Square Greenmarket on Fridays and Saturdays. The baked goods source the grains and fruits locally in NY State. The other bakeries in the greenmarket have many more selections of organic and gluten-free and sourdough breads, but Francesca's has a large variety of sweet and savory baked goods from poppy seed strudels to rugelach, to cider and raspberry filled doughnuts at a good price.
