Empire Bagels Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In the vibrant culinary landscape of the Bronx, few things are as sacred as the morning bagel ritual. Empire Bagels, located in the Pelham Bay neighborhood, has become a definitive destination for those seeking the quintessential New York bagel experience. This isn't just a place to grab a quick bite; it is a multi-year award winner, consistently voted as having the "Best Bagels in the Bronx." For locals and visitors traversing Westchester Avenue, the aroma of freshly baked dough serves as a reliable invitation to one of the city's most respected bagel havens.
What sets Empire Bagels apart is its adherence to time-honored traditions. Their bagels are known for being hand-rolled, kettle-boiled, and deck-baked—a meticulous process that results in a distinctive sweetness and a texture that strikes the perfect balance between a crispy, golden-brown exterior and a soft, chewy center. While many modern establishments have moved toward high-volume automated production, Empire Bagels maintains a commitment to craftsmanship that is evident in every bite. Whether you are a regular who has been visiting for decades or a newcomer who discovered them while in the area, the shop offers a consistent high-quality experience that has earned it a spot on several "Best of NYC" lists.
Location and Accessibility
Empire Bagels is strategically situated at 3101 Westchester Ave, Bronx, NY 10461, making it a convenient stop for a variety of New York commuters. Its location is parallel to the above-ground 6 train, specifically near the Middletown Road and Buhre Avenue stations. This makes it an ideal pit-stop for those heading into Manhattan or traveling across the borough. The shop's physical setup is a classic "window-to-street" service model, a design that is both uniquely New York and highly efficient for the morning rush.
Because the establishment operates primarily as a takeout-only window, it is perfectly suited for the fast-paced lifestyle of the Bronx. While there is no indoor seating, the service is designed to move quickly, ensuring that even during the busiest hours, the line progresses at a steady clip. For those driving through Pelham Bay, the surrounding area offers the typical urban street parking challenges, but the speed of service means you won't be away from your vehicle for long. It is important for visitors to note that this is an early-bird destination; the shop typically opens at 5:00 AM and closes by noon, with popular varieties often selling out by mid-morning.

What is Worth Choosing
If you are visiting Empire Bagels for the first time, there are a few standouts that you simply cannot miss. The garlic bagel is a local favorite, often served "piping hot" when you arrive early in the morning. When paired with their Garlic and Herb cream cheese, it creates an intense, flavorful experience that regulars swear by. For those who prefer a more traditional but equally impactful option, the onion bagel with scallion cream cheese is frequently cited as one of the best in the city, perfectly showcasing the crisp exterior and soft interior that defines the shop.
For families or office groups, the Baker’s Dozen is the most economical and popular choice, allowing you to sample the full breadth of their inventory—don't forget to include a rainbow bagel for a bit of visual flair. If you are looking for something sweet, the cinnamon raisin or blueberry bagels paired with walnut raisin cream cheese offer a dessert-like start to the day. Whatever you choose, the golden rule of Empire Bagels remains: arrive early. By 10:00 AM, the most popular flavors are often gone, so setting your alarm for a true New York sunrise visit is well worth the effort for a taste of the Bronx's best.

Discovered these bagels while we were in the area. Line moves pretty quickly, takeout only, bagels are piping hot especially when early and love their garlic bagels though they have every kind! It’s no wonder they’re on the Best Bagels of NYC list! Thanks, Empire Bagels!

Ordered for the 1st time today through grubhub. I ordered an onion bagel w/scallion cream cheese, and this spot did not disappoint. I can honestly say this is one of the best bagels I've had. They bagel was so fresh, a nice crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and the cream cheese was delicious. I will definitely order from here again ***UPDATE*** Ordered again today(1.6.25), this time had an everything bagel w. Garlic and herb cc and it was absolutely amazing. Everything was fresh and flavorful 🥯

This place has the best bagels. Their bagels are so soft and delicious 😋. The scallion cream cheese is perfect. I love the variety of bagels they have and you cant beat the price. They always have a line outside but it goes rather quickly.

I was looking for a local bagel shop. I am glad we took a drive the next morning. We picked up a bakers dozen with vegetable cream cheese. Wow amazing and incredible all at the same time! I will definitely be stopping by once a week!
