Zeppieri & Sons Italian Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city that is constantly reinventing itself, there are certain corners of New York that remain anchored in tradition, serving as the heartbeat of their neighborhoods. Zeppieri & Sons Italian Bakery is one such landmark. Established in 1968 by Carmine "Butchie" Zeppieri, this family-run institution has spent over five decades perfecting the art of Italian baking in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. What began as a modest two-person operation focused exclusively on bread—specifically the now-famous S-rolls and Pane di Casa—has blossomed into a full-scale pastry shop managed by the second and third generations of the Zeppieri family.
Walking into Zeppieri & Sons is like taking a step back into the "Old School" Bronx. The air is thick with the scent of yeast, toasted flour, and sweet ricotta, a fragrant reminder of the pride and love baked into every item. This isn't just a business; it’s a community staple where the bakers are regarded as neighbors and the staff treats every customer like family. Whether it is a regular Tuesday morning or the height of the holiday season, the bakery remains a bustling hub of activity, recently honored as a winner of the "Best of the Bronx" for its unwavering commitment to quality and heritage. It is a place where four generations of families have come to celebrate life's milestones, proving that true craftsmanship never goes out of style.
Location and Accessibility
Zeppieri & Sons is perfectly situated at 3004 Buhre Ave, Bronx, NY 10461, USA. Its location is perhaps one of the most iconic in the borough, sitting directly under the elevated tracks of the 6 Train. This makes it incredibly convenient for commuters; a simple hop off the subway at the Buhre Ave station puts you right at the bakery’s doorstep. For those traveling by car, the bakery is located near major thoroughfares like the Hutchinson River Parkway and the Bruckner Expressway, though visitors should be prepared for typical Bronx street parking.
The shop is designed for efficiency and high-volume service, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance and large glass display counters that showcase the day's fresh bounty. While the bakery is famously a "cash-only" institution (though some reports indicate a credit card minimum of $10), the accessibility to the neighborhood’s best bread is unparalleled. It is a common sight to see a line forming outside during the holidays, but the hardworking staff is known for moving the queue quickly. For locals, the sight of the elevated train passing over the bakery is a quintessential New York experience that adds to the charm of picking up a fresh loaf of Pane di Casa.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Zeppieri & Sons for the first time, your primary target should be the Pane di Casa. This "house bread" is the foundation of the bakery's fame; it features a perfectly crisp, dark crust with a soft, airy interior that is ideal for any Italian meal. For those with a sweet tooth, the cheesecakes are a recurring customer favorite, praised for their creamy texture and authentic flavor. The Italian rainbow cakes and traditional cannoli are also highly recommended, with the latter being filled fresh to ensure the shell remains perfectly crisp.
If you are looking for something unique, keep an eye out for their sfogliatella (sfugatellas), which many patrons claim are the best in the city, transporting you straight to the Amalfi Coast with every flaky bite. For cookie lovers, the oversized chocolate-stuffed star cookies and jelly-filled Linzer cookies are essential additions to your bakery box. If you are celebrating a milestone, choosing their custom sponge cakes is a guaranteed way to impress guests, as their bakers are famous for creating designs that are as beautiful as they are delicious. Whatever you choose, remember that this is a place where quality takes priority, so arriving early is always a good idea to ensure you get your pick of the morning’s freshest bakes.

Old school Bronx bakery. As a kid, I worked at Ferrante supermarket on Hobart Avenue and we often would get some cookies there and coffee from George’s. They have been around a very long time for good reason. The items they sell are made with the freshest ingredients and more importantly with pride and love. These are great people folks behind the counter works who are kind and hardworking It’s just a wonderful place to get your baked goods. Very busy around the holidays but absolutely worth the wait. Make sure you give the folks behind the counter a tip - they work so hard.

Italian 🇮🇹 bakery in Pellam Bay. Within walking distance from the train station in the heart of things. I like their butter cookies, especially the ones half covered with chocolate.
